The Battle of Hong Kong was a successful Japanese attempt to gain control of Hong Kong during World War II. The invasion began on December 8, 1941, shortly after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (however because of the difference of times, the actual dates of the attacks are different). An army of British, Chinese, Indian and Canadian soldiers fought off the Japanese for a few weeks but once the Japanese gained control of Wong Nai Chung Gap in the center of Hong Kong Island, their victory was assured. Hong Kong was surrendered to the Japanese on Christmas Day 1941.

Since Hong Kong's return to China in 1997, there have been protests against China's crackdown on the freedom of speech, press, democracy and other civil liberties people in Hong Kong enjoyed under British rule. One of the most famous protests occurred in 2014 in Umbrella Square, which is officially called People's Commune. Protestors held umbrellas as a form of symbolic resistance.

This quickly became known as the Umbrella Movement and the plaza became known as Umbrella Square. Thousands turned out, mostly led by students. Umbrella Square was also the scene of protest art, many pieces made out of or incorporating umbrellas in some way.
