Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first word of my "Target" puzzle is a summary, or could mean that your automobile is a write-off because it cannot be repaired. What is this "whole" word?

Answer: Total

As well as meaning the sum of things, "Total" is also the name of a French-based integrated oil and gas company. In North America, a car that has been "totaled" has been badly damaged.
2. The second word of my "Target" describes the South Australian town of Coober Pedy. The town is known as the ___ capital of the world.

Answer: Opal

Coober Pedy is known for the mining of its precious opals. It is also famous for its residents living underground in "dugouts", as the daily temperature can be extremely hot.
3. This word completes a common idiom about honesty. What is this word?

Answer: Policy

"Honesty is the best policy" is the idiom. But according to writer Richard Whately, "he who is governed by that maxim is not an honest man".
4. This is a European country whose map looks like an old boot. Which country is this?

Answer: Italy

A rhyme I remember about Italy is:

"Look at big Italy
kicking little Sicily
out into the Mediterranean"

Rome is the capital of Italy.
5. The next "Target" word is a building in Washington, DC, which is the seat of Congress. It was designed by architects Benjamin Henry Latrobe and William Thornton. What is the name of this building that also sits on top of a hill with the same name?

Answer: Capitol

The United States Capitol Building was completed in 1800. Prior to that, the United States government met in Philadelphia with stints in New Jersey, Maryland and New York.
6. The next word means to assign or grant. Which word am I "allocating" to you to find?

Answer: Allot

A lot of thought went into trying to find some interesting information about "allot", but the best I could find is a limerick by Van Brenner, a former workshop editor of "The Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form".

"A mistake that I often will spot
Is 'alot,' but a word it is not.
Make your writing precise.
Take this friendly advice:
Please allot one small space in 'a lot.'"
7. Which is the title of a book by Vladimir Nabokov?

Answer: Lolita

Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov was the eldest of five children, and grew up in St Petersburg, Russia. He wrote his first nine books in the Russian language, but his later books were written in English.
8. This "Target" word means to give constant support, and is part of the name of a Scottish mountain.

Answer: Loyal

One of the uses of the word loyal refers to reward cards given by various airlines and chain stores in exchange for customer loyalty. Loyal customers can earn rewards and discounts on later purchases.

The mountain being described is Ben Loyal.
9. The last "Target" word is a colour usually associated with canaries and daffodils. What is this cowardly colour?

Answer: Yellow

Atlantic canaries are wild birds known for their yellow colour. They are found on the Canary Islands. Daffodils can be white or yellow, but yellow is typically more popular. These flowers are native to North America and Europe.
10. The starting letters of the previous nine answers will spell out the final answer, which should be of current interest or relevance. What is the nine-letter word I am looking for?

Answer: Topically

The original set of letters given were P L O A L I C T Y, which all created words being four or more letters and containing the letter L. In this case there are actually two nine letter words that can be made: TOPICALLY and OPTICALLY. Only TOPICALLY, however, can be made by using the correct answers from questions 1 to 9, although I have put in wrong answers that could suggest the other answers.
