Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you travel to Salem, Oregon and decide to get a bite to eat, perhaps you'd enjoy a shake and hamburger at the renowned Rock-n-Rogers 50s Diner. What is perched on top of a pedestal in the parking lot that bears the diner's name?

Answer: Pink Cadillac

The diner, which opened in 1987, is located on Market Street. Another Rock-n-Rogers 50s Diner is located on Commercial Street, but does not have the pink Cadillac sign. The Cadillac displays neon letters and accents on the car. The food is supposedly very good and the atmosphere very 50s kitsch.
2. In August 2006, local artist Samuel Clemens created a reproduction of a famous painting. His reproduction measured 60 feet by 40 feet and was painted on a grassy slope on the edge of his farm in Toledo. It attracted a lot of attention. What painting did Clemens reproduce?

Answer: Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa portrait attracted so much attention in the beginning that the public wanted Clemens to paint more. He did. In 2007 he painted a 144-foot-long nude portrait of his wife. That captured quite a lot of attention, and not in a good way. It caused a heated debate in town from local officials about the appropriateness of the portrait.
3. The town of Ashland, Oregon hosts the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, a huge celebration similar to the one in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. The Elizabethan stage, modeled after London's 1599 Fortune Theater, is the centerpiece for the celebration. The idea for this festival came from a local man named Angus Bowmer. Bowmer decided to write to a famous English actor who had desperately wanted to play King Lear during the 1963 festival. Name the actor.

Answer: Charles Laughton

Unfortunately for Angus Bowmer, Laughton had died in 1962. However, there are those who say Charles Laughton's ghost still resides at the theater. He wanted to play the role so badly that his spirit lives on there.
4. The towns of Damascus and Scappoose, southeast and northwest of Portland, respectively, are home to the same unusual attraction. We're talking a really big attraction. These towns each have a giant what?

Answer: Candle

The giant candle that stands in Damascus reaches 21 feet high. It's made of stuccoed steel and concrete and stands in front of the fire department. It has replaced another candle that had been constructed in 1959 to celebrate Oregon's centennial. Scappoose's Peace Candle of the World stands 50 feet tall and measures 18 feet in diameter.

It was built in 1971 as advertisement for a local candle factory.
5. For those with a sweet tooth, an unusual doughnut shop in Portland may satisfy the craving if it doesn't creep you out first. The menu includes a raspberry- filled doughnut shaped like a voodoo doll, accompanied by pretzel sticks should you feel the urge to jab the voodoo doughnut. What is the name of this doughnut shop?

Answer: Voodoo Doughnut

The shop also features Bacon Maple Bars and Portland Cream doughnuts filled with Bavarian cream and adorned with two eyeballs. By the way, they also perform legal and non-legal weddings.
6. In Milwaukie, Oregon, located behind a strip mall, is a replica of a very famous statue. Of course this statue is quite a bit smaller than the original, 115 feet tall to be exact. Placed in its location in 2005, after what statue is the replica modeled?

Answer: Statue of Liberty

Interestingly, the statue was placed behind the strip mall by the owner who is supposedly of Middle Eastern descent. He wanted to dedicate the statue to America after the 9/11 attacks. It's certainly an interesting way to represent America by having a replica of Lady Liberty surrounded by car lots and supermarkets on a bustling city street.
7. In McMinnville, Oregon, a famous airplane is on display at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum. The plane at one time belonged to the wealthy industrialist, Howard Hughes. What is the name of Hughes' airplane?

Answer: Spruce Goose

In 1992, the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum purchased the Spruce Goose. It arrived in separate pieces from California, where it had been on display in Long Beach, to McMinnville. The final reassembling of the Spruce Goose took place on December 7, 2001.
8. On September 18, 2006, a Bend, Oregon gas station owner decided to try something a little different. Inspired by a California man who had done the same thing years earlier, Kent Couch tied something to 67 helium-filled latex balloons for an aerial excursion. What did Kent Couch tie to the balloons?

Answer: a lawn chair

Despite his last name, Kent Couch used a lawn chair to successfully balloon-travel twice. The first time he traveled about 97 miles. The second time he traveled about 235 miles and actually landed his lawn chair in Cambridge, Idaho. The townsfolk greeted Couch with a hero's welcome.
9. Residents of the small town of Molalla in Clackamas County have been telling stories about something very strange happening for many years. What do the locals believe is haunted?

Answer: Cemetery

Some believe that Dibble Cemetery is as haunted as you can get. Others believe that some strange phenomenon takes place there. Whatever the explanation, the incessant howling coming from somewhere deep in the graveyard is very real.
10. If you ever travel to Astoria, Oregon, you might be surprised to see what stands atop Coxcomb Hill. Inspired by the ancient Roman original, what is this structure?

Answer: a marble column

In 113 A.D., a marble structure was built to honor Emperor Trajan. Trajan's Column had bas-relief etchings depicting the Emperor's military victories. Architect Electus Litchfield built the Astoria Column and replaced marble with concrete. Attilio Pusterla created the Astoria's mural with depictions of local historical events instead of Trajan's military victories.

The project was funded by Victor Astor, grandson of millionaire John Jacob Astor, founder of the Pacific Fur Trading Company.
