Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What name does a comic strip character, sitcom actor and alcoholic drink have in common?

Answer: Alexander

Dagwood and Blondie Bumstead's son is named Alexander (he was known as Baby Dumpling in his infancy), Jason Alexander is best known as George Consanza on "Seinfeld" and brandy Alexander (brandy mixed with chocolate) was named for Alexander the Great because it was said one needed the courage of the Greek conquerer to drink it.
2. What screenwriter put his experience of the 50's Hollywood Communist witch hunts into a movie starring Woody Allen?

Answer: Walter Bernstein

Bessie, Lawson and Trumbo were members of the "Hollywood Ten" (first to be blacklisted), but it was Bersnstein who used his experience as the basis of his 1976 script "The Front", directed by Martin Ritt (NOT by Allen!). Ritt and co-star Zero Mostel also fell afoul of the blacklist.
3. What musical family was best known for bluegrass music?

Answer: Carter

Alvin and Sara Carter were the hub of this first family of bluegrass music, along with their daughter Janette, Alvin's sister Maybelle and Sara's sisters Helen and June (who later wed the late, great Johnny Cash). Yokum is the family of Al Capp's hillbilly L'il Abner and Hatfield and McCoy are the famed feuding families.
4. What late millionaire has a screen actor for a great-grandson?

Answer: Getty

Rockefeller was an oil magnate like J. Paul Getty, but only Getty has screen actor Balthazar Getty for a great-grandson (Balthazar's real first name is Paul, for his ancestor's middle name). Vanderbilt and Carnegie were in railroads and steel, respectively.
5. What stage producer was actress Margaret Sullavan's husband?

Answer: Leland Hayward

Four-time Tony-winning producer Hayward was Sullavan's third husband (she was married to Henry Fonda and director William Wyler before); he produced both stage and screen versions of "Mister Roberts", one of Fonda's best known stage and screen roles.
6. What publishing house had a seagull for a logo?

Answer: W.W. Norton & Co.

Little, Brown's logo is the Charles Bulfinch eagle column behind Boston's State House (as I've said in an earlier quiz!), Houghton, Mifflin's is a boy on a dolphin and Simon and Schuster's is a sower, inspired by the Millet painting.
7. What artist is best known for the "Flash Gordon" strip?

Answer: Alex Raymond

Raymond also did the "Jungle Jim" and "Rip Kirby" strips but he's best known for "Flash Gordon". The late Eisner created and drew "The Spirit", Hogarth did "Tarzan" and Foster did "Prince Valiant".
8. What Prime Minister was born a Libra?

Answer: Margaret Thatcher

Current Minister Blair was born June 6, 1953, making him a Gemini. The great Churchill was born February 2, 1874. so he was an Aquarius. His post-war successor Eden was born July 6, 1897, making him a Cancer. Thatcher was born October 13, 1925, so she's the only Libra in the group. (she shares this birthday with "X-Files" creator Chris Carter, no relation to the bluegrass family!)
9. Which one of these women was NOT one of Hemingway's wives?

Answer: Dorothy Thompson

The other three were Ernest's wives (not all at once, of course!). Journalist Thompson was the second wife of Hemingway's fellow Nobelist Sinclair Lewis. Hemingways last wife was Mary Walsh.
10. So what's the famous movie linking the nine answers?

Answer: Citizen Kane

All the names are shared by the supporting characters of Orson Welles' masterpiece. Dorothy Commingore played Susan ALEXANDER, Kane's second wife, who he pushed into a disastrous opera career. Everett Sloane was BERNSTEIN, Kane's most faithful aide (named after Welles' real-life guardian in his youth). Erskine Sanford was CARTER, the manager of the Inquirer, the newspaper Kane bought. Ray Collins was Boss Jim W. GETTYS, the political boss who exposed Kane's affair with Susan. Joseph Cotton played Kane's pal Jed LELAND, who later turned against Kane.

The late Ruth Warwick was Kane's first wife Emily NORTON, who divorced him after the scandal. Paul Stewart was the creepy butler RAYMOND. British actor George Couluris played Kane's antagonistic guardian Walter Parks THATCHER. William Alland (who later produced such films as "Creature of the Black Lagoon" for Universal) was the faceless reporter THOMPSON. Hope you liked the quiz!
