Answer: Truro

Truro is in fact the only city in Cornwall, and the smallest city in England other than the City of London, which is only one square mile in area.
2. Which material is most closely associated with mining in the county, especially in Redruth and Camborne?

Answer: Tin

Tin mining in Cornwall only recently ceased in Cornwall with the closure of South Crofty. China clay is still mined in St Austell.

Answer: False

Devon also has two coastlines. Cornwall, however, has the longest coastline in the UK.

Answer: Tavistock

Hugh Town is on the Isles of Scilly, which is still in the boundary of Cornwall. Bude is to the far north of the county. Saltash is often referred to as part of Plymouth, but is actually on the Cornish side of the river Tamar. Tavistock is in Devon, north of Plymouth.

Answer: Gwithian

Gwithian is in Hayle. Fistral Bay in Newquay is world-reknown for its surfing, with a major internation competition held there annually.

Answer: Pasty

The pasty was originally designed for the legions of Cornish miners. It would have meat in one end, and a sweet in the other. The distinctive crust on a pasty is there so the miners dirt-caked hand doesn't get on the pasty itself.

Answer: Black and white

The flag is a white cross on a black background. It is known as the Flag of St Piran, and represents white tin flowing from black rock, and good overcoming evil.

Answer: The Eden Project

The Eden Project, built into an old China Clay pit, has become one of the 'Seven Wonders of England', and one of the UK's top attractions. It's a collection of gardens inside a huge glass dome.

Answer: Penzance

Cornwall used to have roughly twice as much railway as it does nowadays - much of it was torn up in the early sixties.

Answer: Goonhilly Earth Station

The site, owned by BT, has transmitted many global events, such as Live Aid. It is situated on Goonhilly Downs due to the flat nature of the land, and its proximity to America.

Answer: Falmouth

Falmouth is a relatively small port. Bigger ships mainly come here for repair, although a sizeable fishing fleet operates from the port, and leisure craft are numerous. Plymouth has the huge military Devonport, but it's not in Cornwall.

Answer: St Piran

St Piran's day is celebrated on March the 5th, the day on which he arrived in Perranporth (Piran's Port).

Saint Michael and Saint Petroc are also thought of as patron saints of Cornwall in some parts.

Some other Cornish words include 'porth' (meaning beach or cove), and 'chy' (meaning house).

Cornwall also has it's own political party, 'Mebyon Kernow', fighting for independence for the county.
15. Richard Trevithick was a well-known Cornish inventor. But what was his most famous invention?

Answer: Steam engine

In 1804 Trevithick built the first steam locomotive. Some years before he had built a steam road-engine and driven it up Camborne Hill. The 2004 £2 coin commemorates the bicentenary of Trevithick's railway locomotive. Trevithick invented the steam engine, used by Robert Stephenson in his Rocket. There is a festival in Trevithick's name in his hometown of Camborne.
