Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the world's tallest active volcanos, which of these Andean peaks can be seen from the Ecuadorian capital?

Answer: Cotopaxi

Only fifty kilometers south of Quito, Ecuador, Cotopaxi and Cotopaxi National Park are home to earthquakes and the occasional eruption over the past centuries. The region has been shaped significantly by the seismic activity and, in fact, the earthquakes have shaken avalanches off the super-high peak, one of the only equatorial locations to have such glaciers (though, to be fair, it reaches nearly six kilometers above sea level!). Quito, only a short distance away, is actually situated on the side of a different active volcano, Pichincha, which is also active.
2. Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park and the Petrohue River are part of the Los Lagos region of what country?

Answer: Chile

The Los Lagos Region, part of which is in the Patagonian Andes, is perhaps one of the most picturesque locations in Chile. Found quite a ways south of the capital city, Santiago, it's known for adventure tourism and natural parklands including Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park a short drive from Puerto Montt.

The Petrohué River and its waterfalls, fed by run-off from Volcan Osorno, are well-known amongst international fishermen.
3. Somewhat of the end of the world, Ushuaia is a city found at the southernmost point of the Americas in what South American country?

Answer: Argentina

Ushuaia, part of Tierra del Fuego, is regarded as not only the southernmost city in the Americas, but amongst all the other continents as well. It's found between the 54th and 55th parallel south and is a permanent home to tens of thousands of Argentineans.

It's not completely isolated though; while Ushuaia isn't typically a go-to vacation spot it's actually a launching point for Antarctic cruises and provides a unique brand of adventure tourism for people looking to explore nearby glacier parks or the islands around the Beagle Channel.
4. You would have to travel to Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, to see this main train station, in front of which is which of these monuments?

Answer: Praça dos Trabalhadores

Praça dos Trabalhadores, the Square of Workers, can be found in Maputo. A monument to soldiers in World War I, the statue there sits directly in front of Maputo's railway station in the center of town. Found in the far south of Mozambique, Maputo rests on the African coast next to the Indian Ocean and, surprisingly, only houses about one in twenty Mozambique citizens. Only about an hour away from South Africa, Maputo is also a major city for trade, connecting to the rest of the eastern side of the continent and Asia. Madagascar rests a thousand kilometers off the coast of Mozambique.
5. What island collective found in the Indian Ocean, no more than fifty kilometers from Tanzania, merged with Tanganyika in 1964?

Answer: Zanzibar

While Tanganyika accounts for the mainland part of Tanzania, Zanzibar includes the islands of Unguja (better known as Zanzibar) and Pemba. Run separately from the mainland, Zanzibar has been inhabited for, possibly, tens of thousands of years but commenced the formation of a vibrant culture and history when the Portuguese inhabited it in the late fifteenth century...and then Oman took over two hundred years later. Stone Town, the center of Zanzibar City, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
6. The site of which former Nazi concentration camp can be found in Poland?

Answer: Auschwitz-Birkenau

The remains of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and the tracks leading into it are found in the southern end of Poland on land formerly annexed by Nazi Germany in the Second World War. Auschwitz, considered one of the most notorious sites of the Holocaust during the 1940s, was liberated in 1945, becoming one of the earliest designated UNESCO Heritage Sites (in 1979).

It has since become a state museum and memorial to the innocent lives lost during one of the worst tragedies in human history.
7. If you head to Kuala Lumpur, you can find what famous cave and shrine in the Gombak region?

Answer: Batu Caves

The Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur's most popular geological sites, also happens to be a major Hindu shrine. Visitors take more than two hundred fifty stairs to the top, worshiping or not, and can explore numerous caverns and their gold statues. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is loaded with countless modern wonders (most notably the Petronas Twin Towers), but the limestone Batu Caves are a good indicator of the unique geology of the country. Rock climbing can most certainly be done at the Batu Caves, but anyone seeking adventure would be best to visit Malaysian Borneo instead.
8. This is the tallest tower in what Special Administrative Region of China?

Answer: Macau

Aptly named, Macau Tower stands 338m tall from ground to spire and is home to one of the world's highest skyjumps (in essence, a controlled bungee) in which visitors drop more than two hundred meters to the pavement. Also a telecom tower, Macau Tower is one of the most famous tourist spots in this city which, although steeped in rich cultural heritage, has increasingly become an Asian gambling Mecca. Macau is home to dozens of major casinos and, in the 2010s, surpassed Las Vegas in terms of annual incoming gambling revenue.
9. What southern island territory governed by the United States is primarily used for U.S. Armed Forces bases?

Answer: Guam

Part of the Mariana Island chain in the South Pacific, Guam was taken by the U.S. in the late nineteenth century, claimed by Japan during World War II, and then reclaimed by the States in 1944, becoming an official territory (though not a state) in 1950.

While the island is still home to many native residents, a great number of U.S. military units are stationed at the several army bases situated around the land. Despite being quite small, Guam is the largest Micronesian island. It sits on the globe due east of The Philippines.
10. Also known as 'The Pineapple Isle', what Hawaiian island is the state's sixth-largest?

Answer: Lanai

Lanai, the sixth-largest Hawaiian island, is the smallest of the permanently-inhabited islands in the state (the others being Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and Molokai). Lanai, known as 'The Pineapple Isle', is so-called because it's actually home to one of the world's largest pineapple plantations; the vast majority of the island is dedicated to this agriculture.

Despite this, it's also a wonderful tourist spot known for beautiful beaches, intriguing shipwrecks, and golf courses...but then what part of Hawaii isn't?
