Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This image depicts Buckingham Fountain, a landmark in which world city?

Answer: Chicago, U.S.A.

Buckingham Fountain sits in Grant Park, a major urban space near the waterfront in Chicago, Illinois. The fountain is huge, though due to the fact that Chicago can get darn cold (and snowy) in the winter, it's only in operation during warmer months. It's probably for the best; the fountain is one of the biggest and most decorated in the world. Now a historic site in the States not only for its architectural significance, but for being a terminus for Route 66, it may be best remembered for appearing in the opening sequence of the TV show "Married With Children".
2. Let's head to Europe's largest ice cap; we're going to Iceland. What's the name of our destination?

Answer: Vatnajökull

Vatnajökull is, undeniably, the largest glacier in Europe; it's over one kilometer thick in many locations and it covers more than one tenth of Iceland. Two hundred thirty kilometers from Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city, the area is home to some of the country's highest mountains and its largest subterranean geothermal hotspots. Due to warmer weather in recent years, the glacier has been retreating slowly. Nonetheless, Vatnajökull is large enough to be seen from space.
3. This large ski jump, Holmenkollbakken, was used during the 1952 Winter Olympics (but not the 1994 Olympics) in what Scandinavian city?

Answer: Oslo

Although all four of these cities have played host to the world during the Olympic Games in different years, the Holmenkollbakken (or the Holmenkollen Ski Jump) is found in the hills of Oslo, Norway. Rebuilt several times over the decades due to safety concerns, it was the site of the Ski Jumping and the Nordic Combined events for the 1952 Olympics.

While the 1994 Olympics were also held in Norway, they were held nearly two hundred kilometers north in Lillehammer.
4. Found off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, what island was once a center for the slave trade until the nineteenth century?

Answer: Gorée Island

Île de Gorée, three kilometers off the coast of Dakar, the capital city of Senegal, is the smallest arrondissement in the city. Holding a small population devoted to tourism on the now free island, Gorée inevitably became a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significance to world culture. Maison des Esclaves, also found on the island, is known for housing what's now known as The Door of No Return, the passageway through which slaves boarded ships headed to North America.

The location is now a museum.
5. The East Side Gallery is found in what formerly-split European city?

Answer: Berlin

The East Side Gallery is slightly over a kilometer in length, and it's one of the last standing pieces of the Berlin Wall which split East and West Berlin for decades in the Cold War. Featuring over one hundred works of art on its face, much of it has been restored over the years to remove graffiti.

The Berlin Wall, built in the 1960s, was originally over one hundred fifty kilometers in length. The wall opened in 1989 and began dismantling in 1990.
6. Halászbástya, better known as Fisherman's Bastion, stands in Budapest, Hungary overlooking what famous European river?

Answer: Danube

Found on a hill overlooking the Danube River, Fisherman's Bastion is surrounded by seven towers and gives near-unparalleled views of the city from above. Located near Point Zero on the Hungarian road system, Halászbástya is also next to Buda Castle, one of the largest buildings on the river, and one of the most beautiful. Once a royal palace, Buda Castle has since become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surprisingly, despite the Gothic architecture found in the area, Fisherman's Bastion was finished at the start of the twentieth century.
7. Camp Raffalli is a site for the French Foreign Legion on what French island, also one of its twenty-seven régions?

Answer: Corsica

Found in the commune of Calvi, Camp Raffalli is a barracks and headquarters for the Foreign Legion, and those training there are part of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment. The island of Corsica is actually closer to Italy than France and, in its spot in the Mediterranean, it's privy to beautiful weather and pristine waters (which is great, because despite its mountains it also has wonderful beaches). Calvi is considered by some scholars to be the original birthplace of Christopher Columbus while Napoleon Bonaparte was confirmed to have been born in Ajaccio, the Corsican capital.
8. Found in Lalibela, Ethiopia, the structure depicted, carved into volcanic rock in the hills of Amhara, is actually which of the following?

Answer: A religious site

Found in Northern Ethiopia, the Church of St. George is perhaps the most famous of the country's monolithic churches. Built directly into the ground in the plains of Lalibela, it also happens to be part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. and, built over eight centuries ago, it's one of the oldest built religious sites in the world. To get into the church, you need to take a path jutting down into the rock and sink dozens of feet below ground level.
9. To visit this location, you'd have to go to Dambulla and ride a tuk-tuk to Lion's Rock. What's the name of this Sri Lankan destination?

Answer: Sigiriya

Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka's most famous sights, is home to Lion's Rock, the depicted rock column. This whole area, however, is a sprawling location known for housing an ancient city and, because of its historical importance and unparalleled panoramic views, it's one of the most-frequented landmarks on the island.

The city was first settled over two thousand years ago, and the stairs leading to the top of the rock were worn into the stone over that time. It can be visited near Dambulla, a town in the center of Sri Lanka.
10. To visit the Terracotta Warriors, you'd need to stop off at which Chinese city found in the Shaanxi Province?

Answer: Xi'an

Home to thousands of terracotta warriors and their horses, the four museum pits found outside the city of Xi'an contain what may only be a small fraction of the army created for Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Buried under what would later become a farmer's field, the archaeological discovery has been considered by many scholars as one of the greatest unearthings in the history of human civilization. Perhaps the weirdest fact: all of the figures were dressed in functioning armor, and outfitted with preserved weapons.

The museum was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing in 1987.
