Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You could take a walk down the Avenue of the Dead if you visited the depicted site outside of what capital city?

Answer: Mexico City

The image here, and the Avenue of the Dead stretching down it, are found in the archaeological area at Teotihuacan, just a short drive out of the Mexico City limits where you can walk amongst the most important buildings of pre-Columbian era civilization. Amongst the notable sights here are the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the tallest temple structures on the continent in its day, the Pyramid of the Moon, and cave and grotto systems hidden beneath the surface.

The site was settled for centuries before the collapse of many of the region's early civilizations; today it's one of the most significant historical sites in all of Central America.
2. El Totumo, the mud volcano seen here, is found in what geologically active nation?

Answer: Colombia

Colombia actually has a handful of active volcanoes because it's situated atop three tectonic plates. While the country wouldn't be the first to come to mind while considering most devastating volcanic hotspots, it does create for a fascinating landscape. El Totumo, shown here, is actually a mud volcano and tourist destination considered to contain mud with medicinal properties. Found in the town of Santa Catalina, it's closest to the city of Cartagena in the north of the country. Most of Colombia's largest active volcanoes are in the southwest, stretching through the Andes.
3. From this view, you're overlooking what lake from Cathedral of St. Pierre?

Answer: Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva, found on the border between France and Switzerland, is one of the largest lakes on this end of the continent. Created through glaciation, the lake is part of the path of the Rhone River and acts as the main body of water for the cities of Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux.

The Cathedral of St. Pierre, where this image was taken, was founded in the 4th century AD and overlooks the port of Geneva. Off in the distance, the Jet d'Eau is one of the city's most famous landmarks; it shoots water 140m into the air.
4. Named after the highest peak in its range, the Mont Blanc Massif takes in the tallest Alps. Which of these cities is closest to Mont Blanc?

Answer: Chamonix

A geological landmark and a popular tourist destination for winter sports enthusiasts, Mont Blanc is covered in ski hills and looms over a town of chalets and hotels. Chamonix is a mountain resort area situated between Aiguilles Rouges and Aiguille du Midi and, due to its reputation, acted as the first-ever site of the Winter Olympic Games. Mont Blanc, slightly to the north, is the second-most prominent peak in Europe after Greece's Mount Elbrus and is known for its long history of Alpine mountaineering; early mountain climbers of the activity's golden era of exploration used Mount Blanc specifically as a training ground before climbing the peaks of the Himalayas.
5. Mount Ararat is a Turkish peak, but what world capital, seen here, is closest to it?

Answer: Yerevan

A dormant volcano, Mount Ararat isn't only one of the most famous mountains of Western Asia, it's a Biblical landmark, considered the site at which Noah's Ark landed. The mountain rests in the furthest east stretch of Turkey but it's most likely to be seen from the city of Yerevan, Armenia's capital city, since it sits directly on the other side of the border. Yerevan is one of the oldest cities in the world, being settled as far back as 3300 BC, and in the modern era it's a uniquely under-appreciated historical and cultural destination.
6. The Bridge of Peace, found in the Old City of Tbilisi, Georgia, is on what river cutting through the capital?

Answer: Kura River

The Kura River stretches just over a thousand kilometres through the nations of Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan before flowing out into the Caspian Sea, but along the way it passes through the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi and under the pedestrians-only Bridge of Peace, one of the more recognizable structures in the country.

The bridge connects the Old City's centuries-old structures (including Narikala Fortress) and Rike Park on the newer side of the river.
7. This view of the Deira Old Souk would be taken if you're on the waters of the Persian Gulf in what city?

Answer: Dubai

A neighbourhood found up the coast of central Dubai, Deira has been, notably, a major marketplace for the city and the greater United Arab Emirates. Home to several unique landmarks, it has since fallen by the wayside as a critical destination for visitors if only because of Dubai's massive growth at the start of the 21st century. With so much expansion along the coast of the Persian Gulf, it's a good reminder that Dubai contains a significant Old City section that still retains Dubai's cultural charms, even if Dubai, in modern times, is considered an economical and industrial hub built around super-tall skyscrapers and extravagant landmarks, amenities, and resorts.
8. On which Indonesian island is Tanah Lot Temple?

Answer: Bali

One of the most recognizable landmarks of all of Indonesia, Tanah Lot, found in Tabanan on the ocean's edge, is a distinctive Balinese temple that has, over the years, become a popular photography spot for tourists. Famous for its resorts and weather, Bali has emerged as a major destination for mindfulness and health travel (perhaps inspired by "Eat. Pray. Love."), and in an age known for social media, it's one of the most exposed destinations.

Besides its beautiful beaches, Bali is also known for mountains, forests, coral reefs, and rice fields.
9. You may wonder where you are when you're amongst the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, and the New York City skyline, but you're actually in Window of the World in what Chinese city?

Answer: Shenzhen

Window of the World is a Shenzhen theme park known for containing scale reconstructions of more than ten dozen world landmarks. In addition to these faux sites, the park features several sections which replicate international towns and villages; you can visit mimics of Hallstatt, Austria and Venice, Italy in the same hour if you so choose.

Shenzhen, in the Pearl River Delta, is situated between Hong Kong to the south, Macau to the southwest, and Guangzhou to the northwest and is considered the Silicon Valley of China due to its rapid tech industry expansion.
10. Which of these California destinations features a coastal harbor?

Answer: Santa Barbara

Known for sitting between the Pacific Ocean and the rolling mountains to the north, the City of Santa Barbara is best-known for its wine region and Spanish-influenced architecture. Featuring similar climate to cities on the Mediterranean Sea, the region is well-suited to vacationers and, as such, is seen as a bit more of an upscale destination for travellers and wine-lovers. Between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the coastal bluffs, the region is built around cliffs, canyons, mesas, and floodplains.
