Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Seen here are the stilt houses built off the beaches of what Asian capital city on the Gulf of Papua?

Answer: Port Moresby

Port Moresby, named for the first British explorer to hit its shores, is the largest city in the island nation of Papua New Guinea, and considering the population distribution of the country, it's not the biggest place! Because of the Papuans' tendency to live in rural areas, Port Moresby is one of the world's smaller capitals compared to its population.

In addition to some modern buildings and amenities, the city also features oceanside houses built on stilts on the edge of the Gulf of Papua. Historically, Moresby has also been a location of high crime, especially when held against other major cities on the island, very few of which are linked to Port Moresby by any sort of road system.
2. This is Cable Beach, one of the coastal reserve stretches in which largely-remote Western Australia town?

Answer: Broome

Found towards the far north of Western Australia, the town of Broome isn't highly populated, but it does act as a gateway to a wilderness that might not have much of an equivalent anywhere else in the world. Besides the beautiful stretch along Cable Beach, Broome is also a starting point for visitors looking to explore the Kimberley region and the fringes of the Great Sandy Desert.

If you were to drive from Broome to Sydney, non-stop across much of the Outback, it would take you on a five thousand kilometre trip. A flight to Northern Thailand would cover the same distance.
3. Also known as the Valley of the Moon, which of these valleys in Southern Jordan is located south of Petra?

Answer: Wadi Rum

Found south of the capital city of Amman, the Wadi Rum Desert is only seven hundred square kilometres (compared to the more than two million square kilometres of the Arabian Desert) but it's distinctive. As colourful as it is with its vibrant orange sand, it's been used over the years as a filming location for films in need of extensive sandscapes or Mars-like environments.

The expanse here is about two hundred kilometres south of Petra, but it is close to the city of Aqaba, the only port city in the country.
4. The Tyrol Region crosses Italy and what bordering country?

Answer: Austria

Occupied since before the Middle Ages, the Tyrol Region is a mountainous Alpine stretch that covers most of Western Austria and much of the Dolomites in Northern Italy. Containing the cities of Innsbruck in Austria and Trento in Italy, the region has a long and thorough history of Austro-Hungarian and Holy Roman rule, so nestled between the high peaks there you can find small, Medieval villages, castles, palaces, and vineyards.
5. The Angel of Peace, or Friedensengel, is found next to the River Isar in what German city?

Answer: Munich

First erected in 1896, this monument overlooking the city of Munich, Germany from across the River Isar is perched atop a six meter-tall column above a public square. Located in the middle of Maximiliansanlagen where the street passes through, the site is found between Munich's Old Town to the west and Prinzregententheater, home to the Bavarian State Opera, directly down the road to the east.

While Munich is the largest city in Bavaria, the vantage point found here, in one of the city's many large green spaces, is comparatively quiet and ideal for leisure and sightseeing.
6. Ponte Vecchio straddles what river as it cuts through Florence, Italy?

Answer: Arno

The Arno River, which descends from the mountains of the Tuscan Apeninnes, winds its way through Tuscany and acts as the main waterway of the region, cutting through Florence and Pisa before hitting the Ligurian Sea. Ponte Vecchio, depicted, is one of the many bridges crossing the Arno in Florence, Italy, separating the hilly south side, home to Boboli Gardens and Piazzale Michelangelo, from the city centre (including the Uffizi Gallery, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Duomo). Built more than a thousand years ago (the first time at least), the bridge has since become home to numerous small jewellery shops in addition to being a pedestrian crossing.
7. The Dordogne region of France is found east of what major city?

Answer: Bordeaux

A verdant, rural expanse of France known for rocky hills, green meadows, and the massive Dordogne River, the Dordogne region, east of Bordeaux and northwest of Toulouse, has been inhabited for more than one thousand years, eventually being built up with forts and castles-- Dordogne is said to be home to more than 1,500 total castles. In the modern area, it's a destination with a rich history and highly amenable to more relaxed vacationers.

The region overlaps heavily with the historical region of Périgord which, in its day, was split into regions for mining and caves, truffles, wine, and farming.
8. Puente Nuevo, seen here, crosses El Tajo gorge in the south of what nation?

Answer: Spain

The location here is in Ronda in the south of Spain. The beautiful town of Ronda, only an hour and a half west of Málaga, has risen through the ranks as a must-see vacation destination over the years due to prominence on social media. And it's no wonder since this quiet, mountainous location is beautiful and picturesque, home to Arab-influenced architecture and design, world-class cultural landmarks, and delicious food.

At points in its history, Ronda was a go-to vacation destination for writer Ernest Hemingway and filmmaker Orson Welles.
9. The divergent tectonic plates of Silfra, formed by the splitting of the Eurasian and North American plates, are found on which island?

Answer: Iceland

Found at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge on Iceland, the Silfra Fissure is a unique destination that snorkelers can dive into in Thingvellir National Park. Filled with crystal clear waters, this crevasse has formed over many years due to the divergent nature of the two tectonic plates found at the spot.

The water is frigid as it's fed by the runoff from one of Iceland's largest glaciers, Langjökull. Silfra and Thingvellir happen to be one of the more frequented natural tourist destinations in the country, partly because they're both only a short drive northeast of the nation's capital, Reykjavik.
10. This image depicts the skyline of a U.S. capital city. The Home of Country Music, what state is it a part of?

Answer: Tennessee

This skyline depicts Nashville, one of the largest cities in the Southeastern United States and one of the most important music cities in the world, especially in regards to the country genre. Founded only three years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Nashville became an important hub for industry and trading, positioning itself not only on the railroad but on the Cumberland River which, connecting to the Tennessee River and the Ohio River, eventually flows into the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. Though Nashville is somewhat flat it's part of a highland region that proceeds eastward towards Appalachia.
