Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maui consists of two extinct volcanoes. Which of the two is older?

Answer: West Maui

West Maui is the shortest of all these mountains. It's had the most time to erode, so it's the oldest. Plus, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are on the still-active island of Hawai'i, so there much more recent. Mauna Kea is so tall, it can get some snow during the winter season.
2. Just north of the city of Lahaina, there's an old wharf that was sunk during Hurricane Iniki. What's the name of this wharf, now a popular SCUBA, snorkeling and surfing site?

Answer: Mala Wharf

Mala Wharf was built by US military engineers. Ironically, they built the wharf where everyone said not to build it. It's a great spot for a night dive.
3. When flying into Maui, you'll probably land in this city. It's an oddly positioned city, because it faces the wind blowing onto Maui, which basically forces ships into the docks. Its airport designation is OGG. What is this city?

Answer: Kahului

The winds blow in from the Northwest, and Kahalui is on the Northwest side of Maui, so it does get hit by the winds. Hana is on the Northeast side. Kihei and Lahaina are both on the south side of the islands.
4. On the mountain of West Maui, there's a small valley cut into the mountainside. It was the site of a famous battle between Kamehameha the Great and Kalanikupule. What is the name of this valley?

Answer: Iao Valley

Kalanikupule was backed into the back of the valley, where he had the mountain at his back. Kamehameha and his forces decimated Kalanikupule's army. So many warriors died at the battle that it blocked up the stream flowing through Iao Valley. Thus, the battle was called Kepaniwai, or "the damming of the waters."
5. This boat used to be the old whaling museum, but when they built a new facility in town, the ship was sunk to serve as a coral reef. What is the name of this ship?

Answer: Carthaginian

The Carthaginian was sunk in about 100 ft of water as an artificial reef. The top of the mast is in about 45 ft of water. The Carthaginian never actually hunted whales, it was just a replica.
6. This small town is famous for the Hasegawa General Store and the road that leads to it. What is this town?

Answer: Hana

The Hasegawa General Store inspired the character of Mrs. Hasegawa in Lilo and Stitch. The road to Hana is famous for being incredibly twisty and the incredible views. It has many bridges to cross over, and many of these are one way bridges, so it takes a long time to get there from the isthmus of Maui.
7. This "crater" was an old cinder cone in the ocean near Haleakala. The cone collapsed and water filled the crater. It's now known as a crater. What is this popular dive site?

Answer: Molokini

The reef is about 60ft down. Be careful though, there's a current just outside the crater that'll carry you away from Maui pretty quickly.
8. This island is near Maui and famous for pineapples. Which island is this?

Answer: Lana'i

Lana'i was once the site of the Dole Food Company's pineapple plantation. Lana'i is now owned by David H. Murdock.
9. What is the term for the location where lava is likely to ooze out on a shield volcano?

Answer: Rift Zone

Rift Zones are weak spots in the shell of the volcano, so it is easier for lava to flow through those spots. As with most substances, lava will follow the path of least resistance. Hot Spots are what supplies the lava, meaning that it is always below an active volcano. The other two don't exist.
10. Who was the very first Westerner (i.e. European and American) explorer to land on Maui?

Answer: Jean Francoise de Galaup La Perouse

While James Cook discovered Maui, he did not land on it because he could not find a suitable landing. La Perouse, however, did manage to land on Maui, although his exploring expedition disappeared at a later date. La Perouse Bay near Makena, which is just south of Wailea, is named after him.

By the way, I'd highly not suggest going to Makena for a nice beach. It's all really sharp volcanic rock.
