Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Hawaiian island is Waikiki Beach located?

Answer: O'ahu

Probably the best-known beach in all of the Hawai'i is Waikiki on the south shore of O'ahu. The three-mile long beach was anciently reserved to Hawaiian royalty; now it is reserved to tourists. The Hawaiian word "waikiki" means spouting water. The beach is actually sheltered, safe to swim and snorkel, and offers modest surfing opportunities. The first luxury hotel was built in 1901; the area is now chock-a-block with fabulous hotels and resorts. The beach terminates at Mount Leahi (Diamond Head). The Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium are located in the neighbourhood.
2. The East Hawaii Cultural Center can be found on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

In what was the police station and courthouse in Hilo on the Island of Hawai'i, the East Hawaii Cultural Center is located. The center contains an art gallery of local artists, a community theatre and a cultural center offering classes and workshops.

The East Hawaii Cultural Council was founded in 1967, comprising a number of local arts organizations interested in promoting Hawaiian culture.
3. To which Hawaiian island would you go to visit the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center?

Answer: Maui

The Maui Sons and Daughters of Nisei Veterans was organized in 1991 to honour those Japanese-Americans who fought for the United States in World War II. In 2003, they began to plan a memorial and community center which was built in 2006. It is located in Kahului on the Island of Maui.

The center includes a preschool (Kansha Preschool), an adult daycare (the Oceanview branch of the Maui Adult Day Care Centers), research archives, and an educational wing built in 2013. The purpose of the center is "to ignite the potential in people by inspiring them to find the hero in themselves through the legacy of the Nisei Veterans."
4. The Nakalele Blowhole can be seen on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Maui

There are two ways to see the Nakalele Blowhole on the Island of Maui. There is a nearby parking area, above the blowhole, where one may observe the waves crash into the shore creating jets of water and air as high as fifty feet. This viewpoint is somewhat distant but very safe.

The other parking area affords access to a rugged 5/8 mile trail to close-up views. This is dangerous for two reasons: getting too close to the blowhole is a good way of getting thrown into the air by its rush of water, as well as putting one in a position where waves at high tide can sweep one out to sea. Visitors who walk up to the blowhole and peer down into it have thereby failed the Nakalele IQ test.
5. Mount Kīlauea is situated on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

Kilauea is often described as the world's most active volcano because it has been continually erupting for centuries. Kilauea and Mauna Loa converge to create Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai'i. In the Hawaiian language, "kilauea" means much spreading. Lava often flows down the slopes of Kilauea to the sea creating spectacular explosions of hot rock and cold sea water.

In Hawaiian mythology, Kilauea is the home of Madame Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes.
6. The Ka'ahumahu Church is located on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Maui

The Congregationalist missionary effort in Wailuku on the Island of Maui so impressed Queen Ka'ahumanu that she requested that a permanent church building be erected there and named after her. Since her request in 1832, there have been four buildings on the site. The present Kaʻahumanu Church building was erected in 1876 in the New England style of Gothic Architecture. It hosts an active congregation with much of its liturgy done in the Hawaiian language.
7. To which Hawaiian island would you go to see the Princeville Botanical Gardens?

Answer: Kaua'i

Bill and Lucinda Robertson created a small garden in the Anini Stream valley on the North Shore of the Island of Kaua'i in 2001. Their goal was to push back the jungle and cultivate only those plants native to the island. The project attracted other gardeners and grew until it was opened to the public in 2010. Visitors who take small private tours are given both chocolate raised on the premises as well as honey from the beehives which thrive there.
8. On which Hawaiian island can Waimea Canyon be found?

Answer: Kaua'i

The Waimea Canyon on the Island of Kaua'i is frequently called "the Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Located in western Kaua'i, it is ten miles (16 km) long and as deep as 3000 feet (900 m) in places. Waimea means reddish water in the Hawaiian language. Visitors who explore the Waimea Canyon come back with red dust all over their shoes (which does not come off easily). The Waimea River carved the valley, fed by rainfall on Mount Waiʻaleʻale. Waimea Canyon State Park affords access to numerous hiking trails.
9. ʻAkaka Falls can be visited on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

There are two waterfalls which can be visited from ʻAkaka Falls State Park: 'Akaka Falls (442 feet; 135 meters) and Kahuna Falls (300 feet; 91 meters). There is a paved trail but it includes steps and is therefore not wheelchair accessible. These waterfalls are located near Hilo on the Island of Hawai'i. ʻAkaka Falls were named after Chief 'Akaka-o-ka-nī'au-oi'o-i-ka-wao, grandson of Kūlanikapele and Kīakalohia.

The Hawaiian word "kahuna" means expert. It may apply to craftsmen who know the secrets of making things or to healers (surgeons, dentists, pharmacists) or to priests and sorcerers.
10. On which Hawaiian island is Ka'anapali Beach situated?

Answer: Maui

Ka'anapali is a three-mile stretch of beach on the west shore of Maui. It is widely regarded as one of the best recreational beaches in Hawai'i. There are numerous hotels and resorts built along this beach, among them the Ka'anapali Beach Resort which claims to be the "most Hawaiian hotel" in Hawai'i because of its policies, its programmes and its personnel. Built on what were once sugar cane and taro fields, the hotel area has its own golf course. There is upscale shopping at Whalers Village. Ka'anapali is near the town of Lahaina, renowned for its nightlife.
