Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which Hawaiian island is Hilo located?

Answer: Hawai'i

Hilo is the opposite of the Kohala Coast of the Island of Hawai'i. It is on the northeastern side of the island, gets much more rain, is the home to waterfalls and rainforests, and does not have the volcanic look of the Kona side. Hilo is an old town, well developed in the 19th century, built around a bay and harbour.

The town has been destroyed by tsunami on several occasions. It is the county seat, a tourist center, home of a branch of the University of Hawaii, Hilo Farmers Market, East Hawai'i Cultural Center, the Liliuokalani Gardens and Panaewa Rainforest Zoo (the Bengal tigers are not native to Hawai'i).
2. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve can be found on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: O'ahu

Hanauma Bay was created by a volcanic cone near Honolulu on the Island of O'ahu. It affords a highly-protected area for marine life. A nature preserve was established there in 1967 to protect the resource. The word "hana" is Hawaiian for bay and "uma" describes the curve of a canoe's hull, similar to the shape of the bay. Snorkeling is popular here because of the number, the density and the variety of fish. The great popularity and consequent overuse of the preserve has led to restrictions on access which need to be investigated prior to a visit.
3. To which Hawaiian island would you go to visit Tripler Medical Center?

Answer: O'ahu

Tripler Army Hospital was established within Fort Shafter on the island of Oʻahu in 1907. It was expanded during and following World War II. It was redesignated Tripler Medical Center in 1948 and became a tri-service hospital. While the US Army administers the center, it affords medical care to the members of all of the uniformed services and their dependants.

In true Hawaiian fashion, the building is pink.
4. The Seven Sacred Pools can be seen on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Maui

The Pools of 'Ohe'o were named the Seven Sacred Pools by the owner of the Hotel Hana Maui to increase tourist interest in his resort. The pools (there are many more than seven) are the result of fresh water running down from the mountains through the Ohe'o Gulch into the Pacific Ocean.

The whole of this is located within Haleakala National Park in the district called Kipahulu. The pools are over-visited and over-used, especially by less-than-intelligent visitors who ignore the signs prohibiting jumping from high rocks into the pools.

There is also a magnificent hike on the Pipiwai Trail leading to the 200-foot Makahiku Falls and further to the base of the 400-foot Waimoku Falls.
5. Mauna Loa is situated on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

Mauna Loa rises more than 13,100 feet (4 km) above sea level (and an additional 16,400 feet (5 km) to the sea floor. It is said to be the largest active volcano on Earth. The name "Mauna Loa" means, in the Hawaiian language, long mountain. It is certainly all of that as its slopes occupy most of the Island of Hawai'i. The mostly gentle eruptions of Mauna Loa have been documented as far back as 1843 and have continued ever since. Hilo is threatened as is the Puna District.
6. Mokuaikaua Church is located on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

The oldest Christian church in Hawai'i is the Mokuaikaua Church which is located in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai'i. The worshiping community was founded by missionaries Asa and Lucy Goodale Thurston in 1820. The church building was completed in 1837. Previously-erected wooden structures had burned. The stones of the church built in 1837 were taken from Heiau which was a temple in the Hawaiian religion. The church is denominationally Congregationalist and continues an active ministry on the Kohala Coast.
7. To which Hawaiian island would you go to see the World Botanical Gardens?

Answer: Hawai'i

The ambitious-sounding World Botanical Gardens are located in North Hamakua on the Island of Hawai'i. They were initially developed by Walter L. Wagner on 300 acres (1.2 km2) of land in 1995. The gardens are open daily, with an admission fee. At one time, they included an overlook of Umauma Falls but this was sold in 2008 to the Umauma Experience which charges a separate fee for its use. Remaining features include a rainforest walk, Kamaʻeʻe Falls (100-foot; 30 m), arboretum, a 10-acre children's maze, a zip-line adventure, and a Segway off-road tour. Fruit and juices from the gardens are available.
8. On which Hawaiian island can the Pacific Tsunami Museum be found?

Answer: Hawai'i

Tsunamis have killed Hawaiians in and around Hilo on the Island of Hawai'i. The tsunamis of 1 April 1946 and 23 May 1960 were the worst. No more fitting place could be found to locate the Pacific Tsunami Museum than Hilo. The museum is dedicated to public education about tsunamis, to the preservation of tsunami history and as a memorial to those who have died.

The museum was prompted by Dr. Walter Dudley, a professor at the University of Hawaii-Hilo, in 1988 and founded in 1993 by Dr. Dudley and Jeanne Branch Johnston, a survivor.

It is located in the old First Hawaiian Bank built in downtown Hilo in 1930.
9. Umauma Falls can be visited on which Hawaiian island?

Answer: Hawai'i

About sixteen miles north of Hilo, on the Island of Hawai'i, Umauma Falls interrupt the Umauma River. Rather than being a single waterfall, Umauma Falls are three waterfalls, one after the other. The river and falls were created by the drainage from Mauna Kea to the Pacific Ocean. The rainfall is such that the river continues to flow, even during the dry season. They used to be accessible for viewing on a lookout developed and owned by the World Botanical Gardens. This was sold to the Umauma Experience which charges admission to see the falls.
10. On which Hawaiian island is Makena situated?

Answer: Maui

Mākena State Park embraces three beaches south of Wailea on the Island of Maui. What locals call "Big Beach" is also known as "Oneloa Beach" and "Mākena Beach." It is a mile and half long (2.4 km). What locals call "Little Beach" is also known as "Puʻu Ōlaʻi Beach" and is much smaller (obviously).

There is also a small black-sand beach called "Oneʻuli Beach" or "Naupaka Beach." This is a good place to swim and to snorkel. It also affords views of the islands of Molokini and Kaho'olawe.
