Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What river flows through Saskatoon?

Answer: South Saskatchewan

The South Saskatchewan river joins with the North Saskatchewan east of the city of Prince Albert.
2. In what time zone is Saskatchewan located?

Answer: Both Central and Mountain

The boundary for the time zones goes right down the middle of the province with Saskatoon being on the Mountain Standard side and Regina on the Central Standard side. The government decided in the 1960s to maintain Central Standard Time for the entire province, but not to impose Daylight Savings time.
3. For what mineral was a Saskatchewan community, now largely abandoned, named?

Answer: Uranium

The Federal Government created Uranium City on the north shore of Lake Athabasca in 1952. At its height the population was close to 5,000, enough to make it a city under provincial law. The uranium mines in the area were closed in 1983 and the population dropped to the current level of under 2,100.
4. Roughly what proportion of the world's recoverable potash supply is found in Saskatchewan?

Answer: 66%

Potash, a salt also known as potassium carbonate, is used in the production of fertilizers.
5. What is a grain elevator?

Answer: A building used for sorting and storing grain near a railroad line for shipment

At one time just about every Saskatchewan village had a wooden grain elevator to store the locally grown grain crops for shipment. In recent years the elevators have just about disappeared to be replaced with much larger concrete "inland terminals" which are centrally located in a smaller number of communities.
6. What is Saskatoon is known as?

Answer: All of these

There are seven bridges over the South Saskatchewan at Saskatoon, hence the name "The Bridge City". Five railway lines converge on the city, leading to the name "The Hub City". "Toon Town" became popular after the release of the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".
7. Which of these are NOT mined in Saskatchewan?

Answer: Rubies

In the summer of 1914 there was a report of rubies being found near the Saskatchewan town of Harris. This led to a rush of prospectors into the area from around the province. The "rubies" turned out to be garnets.
8. What is the origin of the name Regina?

Answer: Queen Victoria

It was decided to name the city for Queen Victoria, but since there were so many towns and other things named for her around the world the decision was made to commemorate her by using the Latin word for Queen (Regina) instead of her given name.
9. Which border does Lloydminster straddle?

Answer: Alberta-Saskatchewan border

Lloydminster was founded in 1903 before the boundary, which was defined as the Fourth Meridian of the Dominion Land Survey or approximately 110 degrees west longitude, split the city in two. Most of the population lives on the Alberta side.
10. The name Saskatchewan comes from a Cree Indian word. What does the word mean?

Answer: Swift flowing waters

Although the Saskatchewan seems relatively placid it has a deceptive current in places, not to mention a dangerous undertow. Several dams have tamed the river to a large extent.
