Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start in the USA - which state is bigger than Texas?

Answer: Alaska

Growing up in Texas, I often heard an old joke that said if all the ice/snow in Alaska melted, Texas would be the largest state! Of course, I also know the come-back: if Alaska was split in two, Texas would only be the third largest state! As it is though, Alaska is 663,268 sq. miles (1,717,854 sq. km); Texas is 268,581 sq. miles (696,241 sq. km).
2. This landlocked African nation was a British protectorate, although under a different name, for many years before gaining their independence in 1964. What is this southern nation that is bigger, in square miles (or kilometers) than Texas?

Answer: Zambia

Zambia is the only nation listed to meet all the given criteria; Egypt is in the northern part of Africa, Uganda is smaller than Texas (146,670 square miles, or 241,038 square kilometers), and South Africa is not landlocked. Zambia, while a British protectorate, was known as Northern Rhodesia. It is 290,587 square miles (752,618 square kilometers).
3. This South American country includes the city named as the host country for the 2016 Summer Olympics, and is famous for both its jungle and beaches. Which country is it?

Answer: Brazil

Brazil is, by far, the largest country in South America; it is 3,287,597 sq. miles (8,515,767 sq. km), and has 4,655 miles (7491 kilometers) of coastline. Rio de Janeiro was the city chosen for the Olympics; Rio was named the host for final match of the 2014 FIFA Cup.
4. Honestly, it's not just bragging - Texas really is bigger than several countries! Which of these is Texas NOT larger than, in terms of square miles?

Answer: Kazakhstan

Yes, Kazakhstan is the only country listed that is larger than Texas! It is located in central Asia, and is the world's largest landlocked country. Kazakhstan has an area of 1,052,085 sq. miles (2,724,900 sq. km). Belarus is 80,155 sq. miles (207,595 sq. km); Poland - officially Republic of Poland - is 120,696.41 sq. miles (312,679 sq. km); Vatican City, or Vatican City State as it is officially known, is only 10 acres - less than one square mile!
5. Which of these Asian nations, made up of thousands of islands, is bigger than Texas?

Answer: Indonesia

Indonesia is the only one of these island nations that is bigger than Texas; it is comprised of over 13,000 islands! Indonesia's islands give it an area of 735,358 square miles (1,904,569 square kilometers) compared to Texas' 268,581 sq. miles (696,241 sq. km).

As for the incorrect answers, Thailand comes in at 198,115 square miles (513,120 square kilometers), Malaysia at 127,355 sq. miles (329,847 sq. kilometers), and Papua New Guinea at only 178,703 sq. miles (462,840 sq. kilometers).
6. Home to one of the few cities in the world to span two continents, this large country also straddles continents. To which country am I referring?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey is an oddity in that not only the country itself, but one of its largest cities (Istanbul) both cross continental borders, with part lying in the Europe and the other in Asia. Because of the unique geography this gives, Turkey has been a hub of trade and other commerce for much of its history.

It also outsizes Texas - 302,535 square miles (783,562 square kilometers) versus the 268,581 sq. miles (696,241 sq. km) of Texas.
7. This locale is the largest national park in the world, and is, by itself, larger than thirty countries in the world. It also managed to grow to be larger than Texas! What park is this?

Answer: Northeast Greenland National Park

Northeast Greenland National Park was first established in 1974 as a smaller refuge before growing to the current size of 375,000 square miles (972,000 square kilometers) in 1988. As of 2014, it remains Greenland's only national park.
8. Deserts are all over the world, and some of them are pretty darn big! Which of these famous deserts is Texas smaller than?

Answer: Gobi

Covering parts of China and Mongolia, the Gobi Desert is actually considered a cold desert (much like Antarctica). In fact, sometimes the sand dunes become covered with snow and/or frost, creating a somewhat otherworldly look. Other than this moisture, the desert only receives about 7.6 inches (194 millimeters) of rain each year.
9. With the world's longest continental mountain range located partially in this country, perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that it is, in fact, quite a bit larger than Texas! What country is this?

Answer: Argentina

The Andes mountain range is the longest continental mountain chain in the world, and is located in South America; this eliminates China and Russia. Moreover, it is on the western side of the continent, which means that it can't be Brazil; of course, this leaves Argentina! Argentina is, as mentioned above, quite a bit larger than Texas (268,581 sq. miles/696,241 sq. km. versus Argentina's 1,073,518 sq. mi./2,780,400 sq. km. ).
10. Last but not least, this country was once the governing power over Texas, so it probably isn't a surprise that it's bigger than Texas! What is this country, known for bullfights, Frida Kahlo, and mariachi bands?

Answer: Mexico

While Texas has been a part of Spanish, French and Mexican territories at some point, the correct answer - and home to Frida Kahlo, of course! - is Mexico. Mexico has beaches on the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. It has been inhabited since pre-historical times, and was once a part of the Aztec nation.
