4. Which of these fish is known to migrate up various North American rivers to reach its breeding grounds?

Answer: salmon

Every year, in what's known as the 'Salmon Run', thousands of Pacific and Atlantic salmon migrate up various North American rivers to reach the streams and gravel deposits where they were born. It's here that they will breed and lay their own eggs, but they have lots of challenges to face if they want to get there alive. It's hard work battling strong currents and jumping over waterfalls, not to mention trying to avoid becoming lunch for a hungry bear or eagle.

For these reasons, many salmon never make to their breeding grounds and those who do only have a short amount of time breed and find a suitable place to lay their eggs before they too will die.
