Located on the banks of the Merrimack River, Manchester was an industrial center in the 19th century, and, at one time, was the home of the largest cotton mill in the world.

The novel was written in 1954 by Grace Metalious, who was born in Manchester, New Hampshire and lived in Gilmanton, New Hampshire when she wrote the novel.
