Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In September 2004 which former UK football club manager died of stomach cancer?

Answer: Brian Clough

Arguably the most successful manager in British football Brian Clough died at the age of 69. Having won the League Championship with both Derby and Nottingham Forest, he won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 with Nottingham Forest. His self professed title was "big head", but if that title is correct then we need more people with such belief in their own talents to improve things in this country. No doubt he will be watching over us from that soccer dug-out in the sky. Brian is someone whose talents will be sadly missed.
2. In September 2004 what was suggested, in the British Medical Association Journal, to be something that dogs can detect by sniffing?

Answer: Bladder cancer

Research at Amersham Hospital in Buckinghamshire suggests that dogs can detect urine samples from persons with bladder cancer. Apparently they may detect a cocktail of smells that scientists are as yet unable to isolate. This talent may extend to other types of cancer such as skin cancer. From my own experience I know that dogs are very aware of cancerous tumours on themselves and will undergo quite a lot to be rid of them.
3. In July 2021, which organization took passengers into space as tourists?

Answer: Virgin and Richard Branson

The flight took off from New Mexico. It reached a height of 53 miles (82 km).
4. In September 2004, what proved to be 50% fake according to tests carried out at the University of London?

Answer: Viagra sold over the internet

Dr Nic Wilson carried out the tests at the University of London.
5. At the beginning of October 2004 the Prime Minister Tony Blair was discharged from hospital following an operation for what?

Answer: A heart problem

Apparently he underwent an operation to correct an irregular heartbeat. I doubt if the operation was helped by John Prescott being temporarily in charge of the country, or Gordon Brown being his apparent successor in waiting? Or is this what speeded his recovery?
6. Prior to going into hospital for an operation in September/October 2004 what announcement by Prime Minister Tony Blair startled the media and the British people?

Answer: Tony Blair intended to stay on another term as Prime Minister.

In an amazing announcement to the media at 10pm the night before he was to go into hospital, Mr Blair sprung this surprise announcement. He did concede in passing that the decision depended on the electorate re-electing him (presumably next year). However, he gave no mention to the Parliamentary process of electing him, or to the possibility of his own party changing its leader.

The leader presumed to be in waiting is Gordon Brown and much speculation centred on his reaction! Mr Blair clearly has mixed with President Bush so much that Blair now thinks we have American presidential politics in Britain. Forget the Labour Party we are now on the "Blair Campaign Trail"!
7. Who in October 2004 indicated his desire to be the new leader of the U.K. Independence Party?

Answer: Robert Kilroy -Silk

Apparently Kilroy-Silk wanted to challenge the leader, who was Roger Knapman. Attempts were being made to calm what seemed to be a growing rift. With the main financial sponsor of U.K.I.P. pulling out to protect the Tory Party from all its MPs being challenged at the next election (not just pro- Europe Tories), U.K.I.P. became a run of the mill British electoral Party.

In other words, a complete shambles!
8. In October 2004, which UK football club was facing a growing take-over bid from a tycoon from the the USA?

Answer: Manchester United

Malcolm Glazer was gradually increasing his share holding to the point where an outright take-over bid for Manchester United would become necessary in law.
9. Is it correct to say that, in October 2004, Australian Prime Minister John Howard won the election, for a fourth term of office for his Party?

Answer: yes

Mr Howard won the election on domestic policies, while his Labor opposition opponents fought more on the war issue in Iraq.
10. A BBC Panorama documentary in October 2004 covered the controversy of a consultation on sugar consumption. What was the problem?

Answer: The consultation was funded by the sugar industry.

A United Nations agency began investigating the matter. Too much sugar is allegedly bad for our health and particularly the health of young children. The sugar industry clearly had a vested interest in this matter.
11. In October 2004 the Pension's Commission revealed that over 12 million people in Britain had too little savings for a proper pension in their old age. What was the financial shortfall?

Answer: £ 57 billion

The Government then spent a year consulting over the problem. Many suspect that an increase in taxation is a favoured option.
12. In October 2004 the Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint about a public health campaign warning about the dangers of salt.

Answer: False

On the contrary, this watchdog rejected a complaint. It only goes to show that if you believe what big business tells you, including about food and its supplements, you can end up in big trouble.
13. In October 2004 what did the England soccer star David Beckham apologize for?

Answer: Deliberately being cautioned for a foul in a match against Wales

Apparently Beckham was already injured and would miss the next game. He thus deliberately fouled an opponent to gain a caution that would mean he would serve a one match suspension, having been cautioned in a previous game. This would remove the threat of suspension if he is cautioned on his return. Beckham admitted the deliberate carding saying that it showed he was not as thick as some people alleged him to be. Apparently FIFA, seeing this deliberate trick to beat its suspension of players rule, began investigating the issue.
14. In October 2004 it was announced that scientists would hopefully have a vaccine against which disease?

Answer: Malaria

Details were published in the "Lancet" and focused on research at the University of Barcelona.
15. In October 2004 the UK Government announced plans to pour large amounts of money into local and/or national coffers. Their brilliant new and original idea was what?

Answer: Licence casinos all over Britain.

Well who said that gambling never pays? Casinos all over Britain and a percentage of the proceeds going into local or national government. Well you know it makes sense with a government likes this one!
