Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Belgian brewery "Het elfde Gebod" (The Eleventh Commandment) labels its beers 1628. The Dutch remember the taking by Piet Hein of a Spanish convoy carrying lots of silver. Near which Cuban city did Piet Hein conquer the Spanish ships?

Answer: Matanzas

Havana is of course the current capital of Cuba. There is a "P.O.W." camp in Guantanamo for Al Qaeda suspects apprehended in Afghanistan and Iraq. Trinidad is a harbour on the south coast of Cuba.
2. Delirium Tremens, a heavy Belgian ale brewed by Huyghe, is labeled 1654. The Mayor of Magdeburg, a German city, proved in 1654 the existence of atmospheric pressure. Who was he?

Answer: Otto von Guericke

Hieronymus von Münchhausen was a baron famous for his lies. Richard von Weizsäcker was President of Germany from 1984 till 1994. Manfred von Richthofen, also known as "The Red Baron", was the most famous "ace" (i.e. a pilot that shot at least five enemy planes) in World War I. Otto von Guericke had two half bowls made (almost) vacuum, and eight strong horses could not separate the bowls.
3. Kronenbourg, a French brewery, named a lager after the year 1664. That year, on June 6th, the British conquered the town of Nieuw Amsterdam - soon to be renamed New York. Who at that time was the Governor of Nieuw Amsterdam?

Answer: Peter Stuyvesant

The answer is perhaps hidden by a smoke curtain.
Edward Benson was not the inventor of Benson and Hedges, but was an English writer (1867-1930). James Ley (1552-1629) became the first Earl of Marlborough in 1626.
4. Campbell's Scotch is labeled 1710. In that year, Böttcher invented a new technique of making china and established a famous china factory in Germany. In which city?

Answer: Meissen

Jena is the center of the German optical industry.
Dresden was well known for its architecture, until the city was subjected to devastating bombing by the British on February 13-14th, 1945.
Nuremberg is the city in which the famous trials of the leading Nazis and war criminals took place.
5. 1758, the year that is printed on all labels of beers brewed by Martens (a Belgian brewery), was the year a famous astronomer's theory was proved. This astronomer forecast the return of "his" comet, and it did return. Unfortunately the astronomer had died long before. Who was he?

Answer: Edmund Halley

Halley's comet was first depicted by Giotto and is supposed to be the "Star of Bethlehem" out of the story of Jesus' birth. Edmund Halley was born in 1656 and died in 1742. "His" comet reappeared December 25th, 1758 (indeed on Christmas Day).
Copernicus lived from 1473 till 1543 and placed the sun in the center of the solar system.
Galilei (1564-1642) propagated Copernicus' heliocentrism but was forbidden to continue to do so by the Roman Catholic Church. Although he publicly abjured his heliocentrism, his private opinion never changed.
Finally, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) calculated that the orbits of the planets are not circles, but ellipses. The orbit of a comet is of course also an ellipse.
6. Pauwel Kwak, a famous beer by the Belgian brewer Bosteels, presents us with the year 1791. This year was of course the year Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died. On September 30th, 1791 his last opera had its first night. What is the title of this opera?

Answer: Die Zauberflöte

"Die Entführung aus dem Serail" had its premiere on July 16th, 1782; "Le Nozze di Figaro" ("The Marriage of Figaro") on May 1st, 1786 and "Cosi fan tutte" on January 26th, 1790.
7. Lindemans, a Belgian brewery, labels all its beers with 1811. That year the Egyptian Viceroy suppressed the Mameluk opposition violently. The name of this Egyptian Viceroy still rings a bell, for a famous twentieth century sportsman bears the same name. Who was this Egyptian Viceroy ?

Answer: Mohammed Ali

A rather tricky question, but the words "violently" and "rings a bell" should give it away. Indeed: the most violent sport competed by the four people I mentioned, is not running (Abebe Bikila), nor tennis (Younes El Aynaoui), nor even soccer (Zinedine Zidane), but boxing (Mohammed Ali).
8. Duvel, a famous Belgian strong ale, is labeled 1871. On January 18th, 1871, the Prussian chancellor Otto von Bismarck proclaimed the unification of Germany. Where did he make this proclamation?

Answer: Versailles

Otto von Bismarck (1815 - 1898) realised in 1871 his dream of unifying Germany under Prussian command. He proclaimed the unification in Versailles, shortly after the end of the French-German war.
Chambord is a French castle on the river Loire.
Schloss Schönnbrun is a famous Viennese palace.
Neuschwanstein is a castle built by King Ludwig of Bavaria.
9. Until 1891, the year mentioned on all labels of the Belgian beers brewed by Bockor, there were only two reactions to the issue of poverty. The conservatives (including the Roman Catholic Church) only wanted - at best - to give alms, the socialists wanted to fight for a brave new world. But the Pope issued in 1891 the famous encyclical "Rerum Novarum", in which he propagated the idea of a third way - the way the Christian Democratic parties have followed ever since: the way of gradually enacting social security laws. Who was this Pope?

Answer: Leo XIII

Leo XIII was Pope from 1878 till 1903, Benedict XV from 1914 till 1922, Pius XII from 1939 till 1958 and John XXIII form 1958 till 1963.
10. The labels of Gordon Scotch, Gordon Finest Gold and other ales present us with the year 1909. That year the second Belgian king died on December 17th. Who was he?

Answer: Leopold II

Leopold I was king of Belgium from July 21st, 1831 until his death December 10th, 1865. He was succeded by Leopold II, known especially for accepting the sovereignty of Congo, which he bequeathed to the Kingdom of Belgium. Albert I was King of Belgium from 1909 until 1934 and Baudouin from 1951 until 1993.
