Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which piece of equipment will a beekeeper NOT need?

Answer: racket

It is important for a beekeeper, especially one who is just beginning, to wear a full suit to ensure safety. Being stung is no fun. Bee suits are made of heavy duty material which prevents stings. The mesh used for the veil is specially designed so that you can see what you are doing while your face is totally protected.

The hive tool is a metal object which is very much like a crowbar. It is used to open sealed box lids. A smoker is used to quiet the bees while opening the hive. A racket is used by players of tennis, badminton or squash.

It has no relevance to beekeeping.
2. Which two considerations should you weigh before committing to beekeeping?

Answer: the sting and your back

When deciding to begin beekeeping it is important that you consider whether stinging can be endured and lifting be accommodated. This is so because it is inevitable that a beekeeper will be stung at some point in time. Other family members may also be stung.

A bee sting usually hurts and a short period of discomfort may ensue. For persons who are allergic to bee stings there may be problems such as hives over the body or shortness of breath. Such problems are a cause for concern. Also, although you do not really need to be very strong to keep bees you will need someone to help with the heavy lifting. If these factors are taken into consideration you will be able to decide if beekeeping is for you.
3. Beekeepers must know their bees. How can you know a male bee?

Answer: its body is large and thick and it makes a heavier sound when it flies by.

The male bee is called a drone. The drone does no work in the hive. It just flies in to feed and rest. The drone flies up to about 1000 feet seeking a virgin queen bee on her first flight to mate.
4. If your hive is to survive you will need a queen bee. How can you identify a queen cell?

Answer: It looks like a big peanut shell.

The queen bee's only job is to lay eggs in the cells. These eggs will hatch to build up the work force for spring when the plants begin to blossom. The eggs laid by the queen bee may become either queens, drones or worker bees. When a queen's egg laying season is at its peak she can lay up to 1000 eggs per day. If your queen bee dies or is lost, the hive will survive as long as it has one or more queen cells with an egg inside. You can easily identify the queen cell because it pushes out from the frame and looks like a big peanut shell has been cemented there.
5. Which is NOT one of the duties an inside (younger) worker bee will perform?

Answer: gathering nectar and pollen

The worker bee is a sterile female bee. It can lay an egg that will become a drone in an emergency but it can never lay an egg to become a queen or a worker. All the incorrect options are inside duties of worker bees. In addition to those worker bees are assistants to the queen bee, they fan at the entrance of the hive to keep the temperature down during hot weather, they receive nectar and pollen from the outside worker bees and store it and they also feed the queen bee among other things. During a typical life, a worker bee will first do inside duty and only fly outside the hive to gather nectar and pollen when it's older.
6. Lon is a 'newbee' in beekeeping. In order to cut down on costs he has bought a used hive to start his adventure. What should be his first course of action?

Answer: disinfect the hive before use

Lon must certainly disinfect the hive before using it. First of all, he should use an appropriate tool to scrape the box. He should then burn the bits of wax and propolis which he removed. He should also remove the frame runners and replace them with new ones if at all possible.

He can disinfect by scorching with a blowlamp making sure that the wood darkens and any remaining propolis boils. There are other methods but this seems to be the easiest for the average beekeeper.
7. Lon's friend just told him that it is okay if he doesn't have a nearby water source as bees do not need water to survive. Is his friend correct?

Answer: No

Bees should always have a nearby water source. When bees are foraging they collect plenty of water. Much of the water they collect is used to dilute honey that is too thick. They also use water to cool the hive when the weather is hot. Bees also need water to digest and metabolize their food. If you are interested in doing any amount of beekeeping make sure water is available for your bees.
8. Which of these insects are most likely to have a major impact on your honey bee colony?

Answer: varroa mites

The varroa mite can be seen with the naked eye. It is about the size of a pinhead and looks like a tick. An adult female attaches itself to a bee and feeds on its blood. There are miticides which you can use to kill these mites but you should not medicate your bees unless it is positively necessary as the mites are able to build up a resistance against any miticide which you use too often. You can alternate various treatments to prevent the mite from becoming immune to any particular one. Oh! I should tell you this you can use drone combs to trap the mites or powdered sugar dusting to control them if you are averse to using chemicals.
9. Lon has just wired a message to all FunTrivia fans. He has gotten four tips for successful beekeeping but one seems to be incorrect. Which one should he delete?

Answer: Keep your bees in a cool, chilly environment.

Honeybees originated in the tropics. They therefore need a warm, dry place in which to survive. Temperatures that are chilly will stress bees and limit their resistance to disease. Their lifespan will also be shortened. Your bee colonies will be greatly benefited if they are placed in full sun rather than in the shade.
10. Oh dear we are at the final question! Here goes, which of these products will your bees be unable to provide you with?

Answer: molasses

Ha ha! Easy-beesy! Molasses comes to us from the good old sugar cane. You weren't fooled at all. Anyway having a few bees of your own will provide you with your own bee pollen which is antibacterial and good for lowering cholesterol and for weight control. Bee wax can be used to make candles and cosmetics. Did you know you can make your own skin products at home? Royal jelly is a must have.
