Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What types of creatures decide to execute a raid on the coastal town of Sandpoint in the "Burnt Offerings" module, interrupting the Swallowtail Festival?

Answer: Goblins

"Burnt Offerings'" focal point is definitely the quaint, seaside town of Sandpoint, a fishing village home to several hundred inhabitants. The campaign begins during the Swallowtail Festival, an annual gathering during which locals serve delicious food, let loose butterflies in the name of Desna, and simply enjoy the onset of autumn.
But what brings adventurers together any better than a raid on the peaceful town? Before they know it, the players are met with a challenge-- groups of goblins begin attacking, emerging from their hiding spots to fight dogs, horses, and humans alike and setting fire to the newly-rebuilt cathedral in the center of town. No one knows yet, but the Goblins have unearthed the remains of Father Tobyn, the town's former priest. Suffice to say, they're all menaces.

"Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!

Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!

Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!"
2. During the raid on Sandpoint, the adventurers have the chance to assist which NPC, a noble from Magnimar coming to inherit a mansion outside the city?

Answer: Aldern Foxglove

While the others are Sandpoint citizens, Aldern is new to Sandpoint, having come to the town to inherit a manor on the edge of the sea. He's in town during the raid and, unless the players can step in fast enough, his trusty dog will be killed by one of the attacking goblins. For saving his life, however, Aldern will reward the players with a boar hunt out in the woods outside of town. If any members of the player party are female, he'll prove to be a bit of a ladies' man, flirting all the while (even though he is married). His role becomes all the more important in later parts of "Rise of the Runelords".

In the meantime, the players become local heroes.
3. The players are called in by the Sheriff to investigate the whereabouts of Ameiko Kaijitsu. She owns which establishment in Sandpoint?

Answer: The Rusty Dragon Inn

Sometime after the raid and, possibly, after a couple of short sidequests throughout the town, the heroes are called to the Rusty Dragon by Ameiko's barmaid to discover that she's gone missing; it's up to them to locate her. All they have to go on is a letter written to her by her half-brother, Tsuto, who was not born to her father, Lonjiku, and has since been forced out of town.

Sheriff Belor Hemlock is out of town at this point, headed to Magnimar to investigate the reason behind the goblin raid and secure back-up, so it's up to the adventurers to search for the local barkeeper.
4. Where are the adventurers likely to find Tsuto for the first time?

Answer: Sandpoint Glassworks

The letter given to the adventurers by Ameiko's barmaid will direct them to the Glassworks, a quiet building on the edge of the water where Tsuto has asked his half-sister to talk; the building has been run for many years by Lonjiku Kaijitsu. When the adventurers arrive they'll find the place utterly quiet. Lonjiku has been killed already, tied to a chair and doused in molten glass. Goblins, under Tsuto's guidance, will emerge to fight and, when all is said and done, the adventurers will either capture the evil half-elf or he'll escape, leaving Ameiko locked away in a smuggler's cave below the building.

At this point, Tsuto will be confident that his love for Nualia, the mastermind behind the goblin 'alliance', will be reciprocated. If he escapes, he'll no doubt be seen again.
5. Beneath the town of Sandpoint, players can find a series of extensive catacombs and a runewell dedicated to what deadly sin?

Answer: Wrath

Humble Sandpoint, of all places, is the site of the Runewell of Wrath and the catacombs beneath the Glassworks (and a sizable portion of the city) are home to some of the first magical foes of the campaign should the adventurers delve into its winding paths. Nualia reopened the catacombs as another way to one-up against the town; Koruvus, a Goblin leader, explored it and lurks, malformed by a shrine to Lamashtu, a demon queen, even as the adventurers search it.

A visit to the Cathedral of Wrath and the Runewell therein will result in a battle against the self-proclaimed 'Queen of the Catacombs', Erylium, and several Sinspawn. Clearing the Runewell will make Sandpoint safe from its influences...for now.
6. Tsuto's Journal (and other intel) will lead the adventurers to what Goblin base?

Answer: Thistletop

Thistletop, found in Nettlewood, can be approached in a number of different ways, but in most cases (if the adventurers to not skirt along the coast to get inside) they'll find one of the secret routes in by tracking their way through the high walls of nettles and briar that make its twisting passages.

The corridors en route to the coastal hideout will contain a number of Goblins (and their pets); this includes a rare druid named Gogmurt who will be able to use his Woodland Stride to turn the battle in his favour (by walking through the briar unharmed) and his trusty pet, Tangletooth, a fire pelt leopard.
7. Found in the passages near the coast in Nettlewood is a large, howling hole. What's found in the waters inside?

Answer: A bunyip

The Howling Hole is an optional location in the forest around Thistletop which has been seen by the Goblins as a point of interest. No doubt if adventurers are going by they'll be the least bit curious. The hole descends seventy feet into a pool of water below and contains a Bunyip, a large, roaring beast with a vicious bite that guards a fair amount of treasure.

It's also possible to access the cave by swimming in from the coast. Either way, adventurers are likely at a disadvantage against the creature while in the water, and would be best suited to fighting from a cave edge.
8. Warchief Ripnugget, one of the Goblin leaders, rides which of the following mounts?

Answer: Giant gecko

When the adventurers cross he rickety (trapped) bridge over to the island upon which Thistletop's fortress sits, they can head inside and fight some Goblins before entering the lair of Warchief Ripnugget, the leader of the Thistletop tribe. Ripnugget has no real intent to play nice; he'll hop atop his Giant Gecko mount, Stickfoot, and attack the party and, evil as he is, won't really stop being a menace until he's killed.

Unfortunately, he's not the biggest worry of Thistletop Lair.
9. Which NPC in the module is likely found the deepest underground?

Answer: Nualia

While all of these NPCs are found in the floors below Thistletop's island lair, Nualia will be on the lowest level -- the second basement floor -- while the others will likely be encountered on the first. Bruthazmus is a bugbear from Nettlewood who was taken in by Nualia as a bodyguard while Orik and Lyrie, the former a mercenary and the latter a fledgeling sorceress, are there because of Tsuto. All of them can be fought...or perhaps persuaded...to make the trip through the lair a bit easier, especially since Nualia, hiding in the Observation Deck of the second floor, is one of the chapter's biggest bosses. Nualia is the one responsible for the attack on Sandpoint and is a follower of Lamashtu.

It's up to the adventurers to vanquish her.
10. Can the oft-rumoured Barghest Malfeshnekor actually be found?

Answer: Yes

Defeating Nualia doesn't mark the end of the adventure in Thistletop if the adventurers therein are so inclined. Although a few odd creautres can be found this deep into Thistletop, a quick exploration of the caves and corridors on Nualia's level may reveal a secret passage leading to Malfeshnekor's Prison, where the evil Barghest has been magically sealed-off for centuries.

The creature won't be able to leave the room, but the battle with it can be difficult due to its blinking abilities and Will-save-heavy spells.
