6. Is a persimmon a fruit?

Answer: Yes

The word comes from the Algonquin language of Native Americans. The fruit is also called a date plum. It is high in glucose and protein. There are two forms; i) is an astringent which cannot be eaten until the tannins have been removed. This is done in a process called bletting. ii)Non-astringent forms can be eaten.

Plums are very versatile fruits which can be eaten raw, cooked, in pies, jams, sauces, preserves and baking. Greengages are regarded by many, (moi included), as the finest dessert plum. They are oval with a smooth textured flesh and range in colour from yellow to green.
