Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of my mugs are commercial or company name related, like ones advertising food, drink or a business of some kind. One mug I have is pink, has feet and a face on it with fangs. The logo bears the name "Fiendish Feet", but what on earth were they?

Answer: Yogurts

My sister got me this one. I have no idea how many of these children's yogurts she actually had to eat to obtain the required amount of tokens! I don't think you can get them anymore, as I have not seen them in the shops for a few years now.
2. I have a few mugs that either make a noise or play a tune when you pick them up. One nice yellow mug makes a mooing sound and bears the words "I can't believe my mug is mooing". What food item did this mug promote?

Answer: Margarine

"I can't believe it's not butter" was a huge promotion for this brand of margarine by the Unilever group. Other butter/margarine related mugs in my collection include "St.Ivel Gold", "Golden Crown" and "Lurpak" which features their mascot Douglas!
3. Having a sister and brother-in-law in the nursing and medical profession means I get given many mugs advertising drugs, lotions and potions. One mug is bright yellow, has a large smiley face and has the word "Lustral" on it. What is the drug "Lustral" used as treatment for?

Answer: Depression

Like "Prozac", the drug "Lustral" is used to assist the treatment of those people suffering from depression. The cheery mug itself sits on a shelf next to another "Drug Mug" (as we call them in my family) called "Fluanoxol". The smile on that mug does not actually appear until you add hot water. I also have a mug promoting "Viagra", but I was not sure I could create a suitable question to include that one in the quiz!
4. Some of my mugs relate to movies, television shows and television stations. One bears the name of the show and the words "Where everything is stat" on it. Which hit American drama is this mug advertising?

Answer: "ER"

Well, they do say "Stat!" a lot in "ER", which is one of my favourite shows. I brought this mug from a shop that specializes in TV show memorabilia. I also have mugs for programmes such as "Friends", "Doctor Who", "Star Trek", "Six Feet Under" and various UK soap operas.
5. On another shelf sits a blue mug with a picture of a Griffin circled by dots and the words "Midland Stockbrokers" on it. Which of the following types of company would this mug most likely be promoting?

Answer: A bank

"Midland Bank" was the former name of a UK based bank, which was bought by the global "HSBC" (Hongkong and Shanghai") in 1991, and officially changed its name to that of it's parent in 1999. I actually brought this mug from the London building that housed their stockbrokers offices. I also have mugs for all the UK banks, including a few that relate to the old "Midland" bank and their famous Griffin logo.
6. I have a mug that sits on my television, with a picture of a ship on it and the words "10 April 1912" written on it. Which famous ship does this mug commemorate?

Answer: "Titanic"

I'm quite interested in Titanic related items, and have a few books on the subject as well. I attended a Titanic movie exhibition a couple of years ago, and of course a couple more mugs were added to my collection!
7. Another yellow mug bears the words "When Harry met Molly..." on it. Does anyone remember what this mug was promoting?

Answer: A supermarket chain

The "Safeway" supermarket chain ran a series of commercials in the mid 1990s featuring a cute little boy named Harry and a little girl named Molly, with adults voicing their thoughts for them. I don't have a lot of supermarket mugs, perhaps they don't make them!
8. I have some mugs that are strange or unusual shapes, like a chocolate bean one or one shaped like a giant "Rolo". One mug is grey and is shaped like a dustbin. What was the name of the dustbin featured in the old TV show "3-2-1"?

Answer: Dusty Bin

Dusty Bin (or rather just a plain metal bin) was the booby prize in the show that was presented by the late Ted Rogers. There are various collectables associated with "3-2-1" such as key rings and money boxes. You may by now be wondering how I clean all these mugs.

It is not easy, as most of them are not dishwasher proof! I'm afraid I don't do them very often, just a quick dust now and again. If I do wash them , it's just in normal washing up liquid.
9. Yet another shelf contains a mug with a cartoon yellow bird on it holding a telephone. The back of the mug has the words "Make someone happy" on it. What was the name of this bird that featured in British Telecom's advertisments of the early 1990s?

Answer: Buzby

Is there a name for people who collect mugs? Apart from "silly" or "ridiculous" that is. A friend came up with the word "Mugologist" which I quite liked, but if anyone knows of an official name for people such as myself, then I would be pleased to know!
10. Many of my mugs advertise chocolate or sweets. One mug is actually two small ones stuck together, giving it two handles. The words on this mug are "It ain't half a bar!". Which tasty treat is this mug promoting?

Answer: "Double Decker"

You can get quite peckish looking at all those chocolate mugs you know! I hope you have enjoyed this little look at my collection. I'm not sure how many I have now, possibly between 400 and 500. They do take up a lot of room, but they are certainly a talking point when I have guests round! I would like to dedicate this quiz to my friend Jeanette, who has spent hours (not to mention money) scouring shops and internet auction sites looking for rare and interesting mugs for me. Thanks!
