Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Artemis the goddess of?

Answer: The moon and the hunt

Artemis is the goddess of the moon and the hunt. Her twin brother, Apollo, is the god of the sun and music (you may have seen pictures of him holding a lyre). The goddess of wisdom is Athena, and the goddess of the hearth is Hestia.
2. How is Artemis' love life different from the majority of major goddesses in Greek mythology?

Answer: She is chaste

Artemis, along with goddesses Athena and Hestia, are chaste, meaning that they do not marry or have lovers; they find them a waste of time. Artemis devotes her time to hunting with her female friends and her trusty bow and arrows.
3. Who are the parents of Artemis?

Answer: Leto and Zeus

Leto and Zeus, the parents of Artemis and her twin brother Apollo, had a difficult time delivering the twins. Leto was in labor for nine days and nine nights until finally, after the tenth day, she gave birth to Artemis and Apollo.
4. Which man did Artemis have killed because he boasted he was a better hunter?

Answer: Adonis

Adonis, the god of love and desire, boasted that he was a better hunter than Artemis. This angered her, so she sent a wild boar to kill him. Artemis has also killed another hunter, Actaeon, for seeing her bathing in the woods.
5. True or false? Artemis has had only one man win her heart.

Answer: True

It is true that Artemis is chaste, but Orion, a hunter, did win her over for a very short time. Unfortunately, Orion claimed that he could kill all the beasts on the earth, and this angered Gaia, Mother Earth. She sent a scorpion to kill him, and Zeus put him and the scorpion in the sky as constellations.

Another telling of the story says that Apollo tricked Artemis into shooting Orion in a challenge.
6. True or False? Artemis was born before Apollo.

Answer: True

Artemis was born minutes before her twin brother Apollo. She actually helped her mother, Leto, deliver him, making her the new goddess of childbirth, replacing Eilithyia. The twins were born on Delos, a tiny land without a fixed position in the sea.
7. The Wonder of the World dedicated to Artemis is in which present-day country?

Answer: Turkey

The Temple of Artemis was built in Ephesus, Turkey. In it, there is the famous statue of Artemis with many breasts. The temple was completely rebuilt three times until sadly, it was destroyed a final time in 401 AD.
8. What is Artemis' mother?

Answer: A Titaness

Leto was a Titaness, the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe. When Zeus fell in love with her, his wife, Hera, was so jealous that she forbid Leto to give birth on any land under the sun. She was finally accepted by a hidden island, Delos, and she gave birth to Artemis and Apollo.
9. Artemis is usually depicted as which of the following?

Answer: Young woman wearing a tunic

Artemis is usually depicted as a young woman wearing a tunic with her bow and arrows. She is often accompanied by animals or young nymphs in the forest when she hunts. The infant with a bow and arrow is Eros (or Cupid).
10. Who did Artemis apply to when she wanted favors such as eternal chastity, deer to accompany her, and her bow and arrows?

Answer: Zeus

Zeus loved his twins very much, so he gave in to Artemis' wishes. In addition to eternal chastity and deer, Artemis also asked for nymphs to sing for her and hunt with her, hounds, and to be free in nature.
