Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One epithet for Artemis is "the virgin who delights in . . ." Which of the following words fills in the blank most appropriately?

Answer: arrows

This particular epithet comes from the Homeric Hymn to Artemis. She, like her twin brother Apollo, is known for her skills in archery.
2. Artemis is a goddess associated with childbirth. Which of the following goddesses is also a goddess of childbirth?

Answer: Hera

Hera and her daughter Eileithyia are both associated with childbirth. Myth says that Artemis assisted with the birth of her twin brother Apollo.
3. Artemis, along with her brother Apollo, shot down the children of which woman?

Answer: Niobe

Apollo shot down Niobe's sons, then Artemis shot down the daughters. Only when the last daughter was to be killed did Niobe beg to spare her child, but the arrow had already left Artemis' bow. The Twins were believed to be responsible when a man or woman died young--- they were shot down by Apollo if male, Artemis if female.
4. Which of the following was turned into a stag when Artemis discovered that he had seen her naked?

Answer: Actaeon

Actaeon had not meant to come upon the goddess. Even though he accidentally spied on her, Artemis showed no mercy, and Actaeon was killed by his own hunting dogs.
5. According to one variant myth, which of the following hunters attempted to seduce Artemis?

Answer: Orion

Orion did not succeed in his attempt.
6. Which girl did Artemis banish from her entourage when she discovered her pregnant?

Answer: Callisto

Callisto used to be one of Artemis' favourite companions until she was forcibly seduced by Zeus, bearing him a son named Arcas. The jealous Hera turned the unfortunate girl into a bear.(Some stories say that Artemis herself turned Callisto into a bear). Zeus eventually placed her in the heavens as the Great Bear constellation while her son became the Little Bear.
7. Because Artemis was offended, which great leader was forced to sacrifice his daughter?

Answer: Agamemnon

Agamemnon inadvertantly offended Artemis by killing one of her sacred animals. (Some legends say he offended her by boasting that his hunting skills exceeded those of Artemis). To atone for his offence, Agamemnon was advised by the prophet Calchas to sacrifice Iphigenia.

This sacrifice of Iphigenia, would become the justification for the death of Agamemnon by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus.
8. In Euridipes' "Hippolytus", which of the following was the ardent follower of Artemis?

Answer: Hippolytus

To the original Greek audience, Hippolytus worshiping Artemis would be considered strange, as she was worshiped primarily by young women before marriage. The other three were worshipers of Aphrodite, whom Hippolytus despised.
9. In her aspect as moon goddess, Artemis is associated with which of the following deities?

Answer: Hecate

The three aspects of the moon became the deities Artemis, Selene, and Hecate. Hecate was seen as the "darkest" of the three moon goddesses. Artemis becoming the goddess of the moon is probably a later addition to her attributes to mirror Apollo's being associated with the sun.
10. Which of the following cities was especially associated with the worship of Artemis?

Answer: Ephesus

Ephesus was the main city associated with Artemis. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Artemis was worshipped, in slightly different forms (some predating Greek civilisation), in many areas around the Mediterranean.
