Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two painters were prominent figures in the Cubism movement?

Answer: Picasso and Braque

Picasso and Braque began working together in around 1907. Although there have been many other Cubists, these two were among the earliest and were critical to the movement's development.
2. What was Picasso's earliest work that could be called Cubist, or a forerunner to Cubism, called?

Answer: Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

This painting relates directly to the prostitution district of Paris. The faces of the women have been greatly influenced by African tribal masks.
3. Which artist specifically inspired the two main figures of this movement?

Answer: Cezanne

This influence can be seen mainly in the landscapes, where you can see similarities in the colour and feel. Cezanne also rendered perspective by using colour.
4. The name "Cubism" is derived from remarks made by the critic Louis Vauxcelles and the artist....

Answer: Matisse

They descibed Braque's 1909 work "House at L'Ebstaque" as "made of little cubes."
5. Which period of Cubism does this best describe: a more systematic study of structure. Bright colours do not feature. A goal was to show different viewpoints simultaneously.

Answer: Analytical Cubism

This period lasted roughly between 1910 an 1912. As far as I know Structural Cubism and Angled Cubism don't actually exist. Synthetic Cubism came after Analytical Cubism and in it Braque and Picasso began using collage - they stuck things onto the canvas; music sheets, newspapers, rope, chair parts - nothing was safe.
