Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Does a league refer to a measurement of depth?

Answer: No

For a great stretch of time, people thought the '20,000 Leagues' part of the title meant the depth reached when the Nautilus dove. In fact, '20,000 Leagues' refers to the distance traveled underneath the ocean's surface. There was even a "SNL" skit poking fun at this common misconception.

1 League = 4 Kilometers
2. Who is recruited to aid in the search for the mysterious 'sea monster' since he gave a somewhat plausible explaination of what it might be?

Answer: Professor Pierre Arronax

Professor Pierre Arronax is brought aboard the Abraham Lincoln with his ward, Conseil, since the Professor is the leading expert on ocean life.
3. What is the mysterious 'sea monster' in truth?

Answer: A submarine

The passages in which the mysterious 'sea monster' appears to be taunting the Abraham Lincoln with a game of cat and mouse are quite amusing.
4. The Nautilus is the name of the submarine that inadvertantly rescues Ned Land, Professor Pierre Arronax, and Conseil from drowning in the open ocean.

Answer: True

A Nautilus is a crustacean with a many chambered shell that allows it to ascend and descend with great ease. The submarine was aptly named.
5. The submarine is commanded by Captain Nemo. His name means what in Latin?

Answer: Nobody

'Nemo' means 'Nothing' or 'Nobody' in Latin.
6. How many different languages is Captain Nemo able to speak?

Answer: 5

He speaks English, Latin, German, French, and his own special language.
7. Ned Land objects the most to being imprisoned aboard the Nautilus.

Answer: True

Ned Land, with his boisterous spirit, is none too pleased with his situation despite the fact that Captain Nemo offers him freedom aboard the Nautilus. The Professor is somewhat ambiguous, caught between studying the wonders of the ocean depths and returning to his homeland. Conseil merely goes with the flow.
8. Which of these locales was visited at the START of the Nautilus' underwater tour?

Answer: The Island of Crespo

The Island of Crespo sank into the sea long ago, but it is still useful as Captain Nemo uses it as his farming and hunting grounds.
9. Near the end of the journey, the Nautilus is attacked by gang of deep sea creatures. What does Professor Pierre Arronax refer to them as?

Answer: Poulps

Though they are often referred to as 'Giant Squid', the sea creatures that attack the Nautilus are in fact poulps.
10. In a fit of grief, Captain Nemo sails the Nautilus into the Maelstrom, which is located off Switzerland.

Answer: False

The Maelstrom is located off the coast of Norway. Professor Pierre Arronax, Ned Land, and Conseil make their escape at this point. The three friends are left to wonder what became of Captain Nemo and his Nautilus.
