Question 1 of 10
1. 'The first I heard of the beach was in Bangkok, on the Khao San Road'. I was innocent then, and never imagined that a small map could cause so much trouble. I just wanted an experience, and boy did I get one. You see, 'I've never grown out of playing pretend'; my imagination is vivid and can sometimes play tricks on me. But I was responsible for leading Zeph and Sammy to their deaths, and I killed Christo to save Jed. The beach nearly drove me crazy, and I was one of the lucky ones. Who am I? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. It all began when my girlfriend and I stayed at the same guest house as Richard. Although we hadn't officially met then, 'we exchanged nods as we passed in the corridor'. It was I who turned the idea of finding the beach into a possibility. On arriving at the beach I joined the fishing detail and life was perfect. But everything changed for me once Sten was killed by the shark. Christo was dying and I wanted to take him and Karl to Ko Samui to seek medical attention. But my pleas fell on deaf ears. I knew then that it was time to leave. Who am I? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. I was one of the first three to find the island and it is with my map that this story all began. I once stayed at the same guest house as Richard and I also killed myself there. Despite this, I continued to exist - you could say that I haunted people's thoughts, particularly Richard's. I always seemed to appear whenever things were about to take a turn for the worst. Who am I? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. I am a bilingual and rather attractive European woman, who finds it easy to get the attention of men. On my wrist I have a tiny dolphin tattoo, which is half-hidden by my watch-strap, and I am a strong swimmer. Although I have a boyfriend, I was drawn to Richard, and we have shared a passionate kiss. On arriving at the beach I settled in quickly and soon made friends. Following the drama involving the Swedes, I didn't know initially if I wanted to leave the island. But in the end, I chose my boyfriend over the beach. Who am I? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Along with my companion, I first met Richard at Chaweng beach when I was locked out of my hut. I was a fun-loving and intelligent person, with white blonde hair. I never put tobacco in my joints, for fear of getting addicted to smoking, and I was an American Harvard student studying law. I made it as far as the dope fields but the guards of the plantation caught me and my companions and we were shot. Who am I? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. I was born in South Africa, and before I discovered the beach I was a carpenter by trade. I was much respected on the island as I ran the carpenters and I was also Sal's boyfriend. I took myself 'extremely seriously' and considered myself to be very masculine. I never asked for help if I could help it, as I did not wish to appear weak. Who am I? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. 'If there was a leader' on the island, then I suppose it was me. Whenever I spoke, people listened. I spent my days wandering around the lagoon, 'checking on the different work details and making sure things were running smoothly'. I was the organiser, the "mother" if you like. I made hard decisions for the good of everyone on the island. I was a master of lies and I never relaxed. The only time I ever smoked or drank was during Tet. During the rest of the year my mind was always clear. Who am I? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. I was the one who escorted Richard, Étienne and Françoise to the camp when they first arrived. Unlike the other members of the island, I didn't have a particular work detail. My days were usually spent alone, and I was 'usually the first person to leave in the mornings and the last person to come back'. I was constantly alert and acted as the guardian of the beach. I was also good friends with Unhygienix. My golden rule is that the 'first thing to do when you arrive some place is find out how you can get out again'. I stayed with Christo as he lay dying, and it was then that I finally became disillusioned with the beach. Who am I? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. I first met Richard at Chaweng beach when my friend and I lost the key for our beach hut. I was an American with yellow blonde hair, and before my demise I studied Afro-American Literature at Harvard University. I never made it to the beach alive, only as far as the dope fields. I was captured and killed by the guards who patrol the marijuana plantation. Who am I? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. I was invited to the beach by Sal, who asked me if I was 'interested in being taken to Paradise'. I enjoy playing on the Nintendo Game Boy and I was originally put on gardening detail. Eventually though, I was transferred to the fishing detail, which I adored until I accidentally poisoned half the camp with dead squid. 'I went to church every Sunday until I was fifteen' and I consider Richard a close friend. Who am I? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Who am I?

Answer: Richard

The story of "The Beach" is told from the perspective of Richard, a British backpacker who comes across a seemingly unstable man on his first night in Khao San. This man then commits suicide, but not before leaving Richard a map to the beach. This is where the story really begins, as this "Eden" turns out to be quite the paradox; it is simultaneously a metaphor for both heaven and hell.
Who am I?

Answer: Étienne

Étienne is one of the few truly "good" characters in "The Beach". While the majority of the characters succumb to the darker side of human nature, Étienne remains grounded and is appalled at the way in which Christo and Karl are dismissed and neglected by the rest of the camp. Indeed the majority of the camp would rather let them die than risk losing their precious beach.
Who am I?

Answer: Daffy

For me, Daffy, or Mr Duck, is one of the most interesting characters in "The Beach", despite the fact that he dies early on in the novel. He survives through Richard and through the legacy he has left, which is, of course, the beach. He is, after all, one of its "founders", along with Sal and Bugs.
Who am I?

Answer: Françoise

Françoise is Étienne's girlfriend, and it is these two characters who make the task of reaching the beach possible. They are among Richard's closest friends on the island, and yet once they have escaped, Richard never sees them again.
Who am I?

Answer: Sammy

During the early stages of the novel, Sammy proves himself to be fond of teasing other people. One particularly comic moment is when he convinces Étienne that there are no clouds in Idaho. The joke is of course on Étienne, and yet Richard is sure that 'Étienne believed there were no clouds in Idaho to the day he died'.
Who am I?

Answer: Bugs

I find it rather humorous that someone who takes himself as seriously as Bugs does, has the name of the cartoon rabbit Bugs Bunny. Within the novel, there are many times when Bugs attempts to prove his "manliness" and masculinity. 'One example was the way he accepted my'[Richard's]'thanks for the necklace.

His silent nod belonged in Clint Eastwood Land'. Moreover when 'Gregorio said he was going to wait until the soup cooled down' as 'the soup was bubbling', Bugs 'made a point of taking a spoonful straight from the saucepan'. Finally, on 'bashing his leg' with a door, which caused blood to roll 'from a nasty graze on his shins', Bugs refuses help and continued 'stoically tapping the peg in place while blood collected in dusty pools around his feet'.
Who am I?

Answer: Sal

Sal, is for me, the most frightening character in the novel. She has so much power over the people on the island and will stop at nothing to protect its anonymity.
Who am I?

Answer: Jed

My first impression of Jed was that he was not to be trusted. He never seemed to answer any questions and the other members of the island always excluded him. He was the outsider of the group. However, as the novel progresses, it becomes clear that Jed does not fully trust Sal and Bugs and is, in a way, protecting himself by not trying to "break into" the group.
Who am I?

Answer: Zeph

Poor old Zeph and Sammy meet a gruesome end in "The Beach". However, although their killers are undoubtedly vile, what eventually happens to their corpses is downright disturbing and not for the faint-hearted. Beware!
Who am I?

Answer: Keaty

Keaty has a strange connection to Jed. During the novel it is revealed that 'they had something in common, one of those weird coincidences that could easily never have been realized'. They had both stayed 'at the same guesthouse in Yogyakarta, on the same night' which had 'mysteriously burnt down - or not so mysteriously as it turned out. Keaty had been' high and the mosquitoes had driven him mad.

He 'lit a small fire, and the next thing he knew the room was completely ablaze'. Poor old Jed had to escape 'by jumping from a third-storey window' and all his money had been burned. Strangely enough, during the last chapter of the novel, Richard reveals that Jed and Keaty now 'work at the same place' and got their jobs 'without knowing the other was there'.
