Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote these mysteries: "The Virgin in the Ice", "The Sanctuary Sparrow", "The Raven in the Foregate", and "The Potter's Field"?

Answer: Ellis Peters

Ellis Peters' Cadfael series features the Welsh medieval monk at Shrewsbury's Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul. One feature I especially enjoy about the series is learning about medieval monastic life, including all the terms, totally new to me, dealing with everyday objects.
2. Complete a quartet for Finnish writer Mika Waltari's historical novels which include "The Egyptian", "The Wanderer", and "The Roman".

Answer: The Etruscan

Waltari wrote 29 novels and 26 plays, among other works. "The Hobbit" was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, while "The Virginian" was a Western novel written by Owen Wister. "The Cossack" was a short story by Anton Chekhov.
3. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote only four Sherlock Holmes novels. Which novel is the last of them, following "A Study in Scarlet", "The Sign of the Four", and "The Hound of the Baskervilles"?

Answer: The Valley of Fear

The three incorrect answers are short stories, not novels. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is by far the best of the Holmes novels, according to a 1999 survey. Voted as best short story was "The Speckled Band." "Red-Headed" was second in the short story poll, while "Bohemia" was third, and "Musgrave" was sixth.
4. Whose novels include the following four, published in the 1990s: "Rising Sun", "Disclosure", "Timeline", and "Airframe"?

Answer: Michael Crichton

The first Crichton novel I ever read was "The Andromeda Strain", written 'way back in 1969. Crichton grew to be six foot nine, and, as a result of his unusual height, chose as pseudonyms for his first few novels the names John Lange ("Lange" means "long" in German) and Jeffrey Hudson. The original Sir Jeffrey Hudson was a famous dwarf in the English court of the 1600s.
5. Jim Chee and legendary Joe Leaphorn are characters in novels like "Talking God", "The Sinister Pig", and "Coyote Waits". Which of the following is another Tony Hillerman whodunit?

Answer: Skinwalkers

Hillerman's novels take place in the Four Corners area, as well as other parts of New Mexico and Arizona, and are loaded with information about the Native cultures of the Southwest. "Indian Killer" is a novel by native writer Sherman Alexie, while "The Holy Road" is a sequel to "Dances with Wolves." Oddly enough, in the former novel, main character John "Dances with Wolves" Dunbar is a Lakota, but transforms into a Comanche for the sequel. "On the Rez" is a nonfiction account of author Ian Frazier's experiences on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
6. Terry Brooks' Kingdom of Landover novels are a fascinating series of fantasy stories set in a world connected to ours. Pick the fourth in the set I've chosen for you to go with "Witches' Brew", The Tangle Box", and "Wizard at Large".

Answer: The Black Unicorn

Once a lawyer, Brooks now writes full time. Is it any wonder that Ben Holliday, owner of the Kingdom of Landover, was also once a lawyer? The Rocky Mountain News selected two of his novels, "Running with the Demon" and "A Knight of the Word", (not Kingdom of Landover novels) as two of the best fantasy novels of the twentieth century.
7. From whom do we get "The Haunted Mesa", "Down the Long Hills", "Hondo", and "Sackett"?

Answer: Louis L'Amour

In 1984 L'Amour was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan. L'Amour pioneered the "Radio Drama" technique of publishing his novels in audio book form, using multiple actors for the voices instead of just having the text read by one individual.
8. Which former teacher at the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop wrote "Cat's Cradle", "Slaughterhouse-Five", "Breakfast of Champions", and "The Sirens of Titan"?

Answer: Kurt Vonnegut

In 1992 Vonnegut was named "Humanist of the Year" by the American Humanist Association. In grading his own work, he gave himself an A plus for both "Cat's Cradle" and "Slaughterhouse-Five".
9. In addition to a long series of books featuring a particular jungle hero, this author also wrote "The Warlord of Mars", "Tanar of Pellucidar", "Pirates of Venus", and "The People That Time Forgot". Who was he?

Answer: Edgar Rice Burroughs

Pellucidar was a "continent" in the center of the earth which Tarzan visited in "Tarzan at the Earth's Core". In Burroughs' Mars series, his name for Mars is Barsoom, with John Carter being the hero of the series. Conan Doyle's "Lost World" is similar to Burroughs' Pellucidar series, although it is set in the Amazon, while Verne's "A Journey to the Center of the Earth" also shares many characteristics.
10. Who wrote "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Glory Road", "Job: A Comedy of Justice", and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"?

Answer: Robert A. Heinlein

A couple of quotes from Heinlein include "Never insult anyone by accident" and "I never learned from a man who agreed with me." According to Isaac Asimov's memoirs, Heinlein changed from being a "flaming" liberal to a "rock-ribbed" conservative about the same time he "changed wives" from a liberal woman to a conservative one.
