Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many months did Cassandra's father spend in prison?

Answer: 3

James Mortmain got sent to prison after a nosy neighbour thought he was going to kill his wife with a cake knife, when, in fact he was just pointing at her. James got angry, and punched the neighbour, landing him in court. He claims that he got an extra month because Cassandra hit the neighbour over the head with her wooden spade.
2. Who left her beaver skin coat and bear coat to Rose and Cassandra?

Answer: Aunt Millicent

Aunt Millicent, who was in fact Cassandra's great aunt, left Rose and Cassandra all her clothes, although only the beaver and bear coats could be sold. The bear coat caused a lot of mishap for Rose on the way back home to the castle.
3. How many bottles of lemonade does Neil order to give to the children of the village school?

Answer: 24

Neil orders twenty four bottles, which they take into the children. Simon gets very embarrassed when Cassandra tricks him into making a speech, and his beard made a little girl hide beneath her desk.
4. Where does Cassandra imagine Rose having her honeymoon with Simon?

Answer: Paris

Before Cassandra falls in love with Simon, she imagines various situations with Rose and Simon, in this case, she was imagining their honeymoon when the real Simon Cotton appeared, embarrassing her very much.
5. Which painter's style does Simon liken Rose to?

Answer: Romney

When Cassandra, Simon, Rose, Topaz and Mr and Mrs Fox-Cotton are walking along the portrait gallery at Scoatney they have a discussion about who would be painted by which painter. Leda Fox-Cotton was not best pleased when her husband likened her to Salvador Dali, "with snakes coming out of her ears"!
6. What does Cassandra buy with the money from the "Collie Dog" rug?

Answer: Lavender Soap

Cassandra buys lavender soap with her pocket money (a rare treat) and Rose buys nail polish. Cassandra warns Rose about painting her nails too early- the Cottons wouldn't be back for a few days yet.
7. How does Simon describe Cassandra to Neil at the beginning?

Answer: Consciously naive

Cassandra overhears them talking when she is sitting up on top of the barn, and they are walking past. They also insult Rose, with Neil saying that Simon was lucky to get away from her obvious advances.
8. What is the first thing Simon does after he kisses Cassandra?

Answer: Laughs

Simon kisses Cassandra while they are dancing to the 'Lover' music, and he kisses Cassandra on impulse, with the excuse that "She had been so sweet all evening."
9. What does Topaz send Cassandra for her birthday, pretending it was from James Mortmain?

Answer: A complete set of Shakespeare

Topaz sends her the Shakespeare from Mortmain, Neil sends her a box of chocolates, Stephen gives her a wireless and Simon send her a state of the art gramophone, which makes Cassandra feel very bad about Stephen.
10. What drink does Rose choose outside the pub, because it goes with her hair?

Answer: Creme de Menthe

Rose keeps holding her Creme de Menthe up against her hair, to impress Simon. Neil finds this very amusing, and makes a few dry-witted remarks about it.
11. Where is Cassadra sitting at the beginning of the book?

Answer: On the draining board

Cassandra is sitting on the draining board, with her feet in the kitchen sink. She later sits in the hayloft and writes for six solid hours. She never writes on the bank of the river, as there is no river near the castle, only a moat.
12. What colour is the tea gown originally before Rose and Topaz dye it green?

Answer: Orange

Rose is wearing the newly dyed tea gown on the night that the Cottons first come to the castle, and utterly charms them with it. However, when she wears it the next day for afternoon tea, the effect is spoilt, and the Cottons think her charm is too contrived.
13. What does the note written on the card that Simon puts in the vase of roses he puts in Rose's room say?

Answer: Good morning darling

Rose tells Cassandra to chuck the note in the waste paper basket, making Cassandra realise that Rose doesn't love Simon. This leads to a row conducted in whispers, and Cassandra leaves the flat.
14. Where is Neil going to take Rose so she can go dancing?

Answer: Beverley Hills

Rose only has posh dresses in her trousseau, and she needs slacks and shorts in California, so Neil promises to take her to Beverley Hills so they can go dancing.
15. What is the last thing, apart from "I love you", that Cassandra writes?

Answer: Only the margin left to write on now

Although the last relevant thing that Cassandra writes is "He said he would come back", she also writes "Only the margin left to write on now", and then she proceeds to write "I love you, I love you, I love you".
