Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Give me Shelley's full name (and yes, spelling does count. That's the whole point of this question!)

Answer: Percy Bysshe Shelley

Don't ask me what kind of name that is. But the important thing is that he wrote beautiful poetry, not that he has an utterly strange middle name.
2. What is the name of the man who writes the letter in Byron's "Dear Doctor, I Have Read Your Play"?

Answer: John Murray

"And so, with endless truth and hurry / Dear Doctor, I am yours, JOHN MURRAY." Published in 1830, this poem is one of Byron's most funny and caustic works. "Your dialogue is apt and smart / The play's concoction full of art / Your hero raves, your heroine cries / All stab and everybody dies...."
3. Fill in the blanks: "To see a World in a _____ ___ ______ / And a Heaven in a _____ _____ / Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand / And Eternity in an ____"

Answer: grain of sand, wild flower, hour

These beautiful and very famous lines are from William Blake's "Auguries of Innocence." I daresay this is the most famous Blake quote, followed by "Tyger, Tyger" (you know, the one with the "fearful symmetry"....)
4. Which lengthy narrative poem in seven parts features an albatross, two ships, Death and Life-in-Death, impersonated by a woman, and lots of ice?

Answer: "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" (Samuel Taylor Coleridge)

An eerie, albeit fascinating story. I seem to remember that there is an English idiom that goes, "The albatross around one's neck," referring to a mistake someone made in the past, the consequences of which he or she still has to bear. I'd be very surprised if this wasn't a reference to Coleridge's poem.
5. A poem featuring a stunningly wide range of vocabulary to describe water coming down a cataract is "The Cataract of Lodore (described in rhymes for the nursery)." Who wrote this poem?

Answer: Robert Southey

You should really go and read it if you haven't done so yet. It's quite amazing. Southey actually found about 150 different verbs to describe the water, and the structure is also very suitable for a cataract.
6. Who wrote, among others, those beautiful poems: "Ode to a Nightingale," "To Autumn," "Over the hill and over the dale," and "To Sleep"?

Answer: John Keats

Keats's most famous poem is probably "La Belle Dame Sans Merci: A Ballad," but I didn't want to mention it in the question (too easy!). He wrote a number of very beautiful, very melancholy poems that often deal with nature in one way or the other.
7. According to Blake, what four characteristics form "The Divine Image"?

Answer: Mercy, Pity, Peace and Love

Another classic.
8. Which bird did Wordsworth describe as "Ethereal minstrel! Pilgrim of the sky!"?

Answer: skylark

... not to be confused with Shelley's "To a Skylark": "Hail to thee, blithe spirit."
9. "To a Mouse - on turning her up in her nest with the plough, November 1785" - who wrote this moving little poem?

Answer: Robert Burns

Sometimes, Burns's Scots (it is Scots, isn't it?) is really hard to understand for a non-native speaker. I had to guess my way through the poem. "Thou need na start awa sae hasty...." When I first came across it, I was really moved. I mean, not everyone would write such a cute poem when they disturb a mouse in the field, would they?
10. In James Elroy Flecker's "Gates of Damascus," which of the four gates is the "Postern of Fate"?

Answer: East Gate

"Pass not beneath, O caravan, or pass not singing. Have you heard / That silence where the birds are dead yet something pipeth like a bird? / Pass not beneath! Men say there blows in stony deserts still a rose / But with no scarlet to her leaf and from whose heart no perfume flows...." Mmmmmh....
I hope you liked the quiz. Thanks for playing.
