Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From where does the Taurus Express depart?

Answer: Syria

Poirot has been solving a case in Syria. The Taurus Express is going to Stamboul first. There are two English passengers on the Taurus Express - a Colonel Arbuthnot and a young English lady, Mary Debenham. Mary seems eager to catch the Simplon Orient Express. There is snow forecast.
2. What number berth is Poirot given?

Answer: 7

The Orient Express will take three days to travel across Europe, to London. Poirot's friend, Monsieur Bouc, is a director of the Orient Express.
3. Where is the train stranded?

Answer: Yugoslavia

When Poirot awakes the next day, Monsieur Bouc tells him that Samuel Ratchett is dead - he has been stabbed multiple times. The Wagon-Lit conductor, Pierre Michel, found the dead body. The murderer can not have left the train; whoever killed Ratchett is still on board.
4. What does Poirot ask Pierre Michel to find for him?

Answer: Hat box

There is a scrap of paper, almost burnt, in Ratchett's carriage. Poirot uses an old fashioned hat box to retrieve the paper, that says "-member little Daisy Armstrong". Poirot says he now knows Ratchett's real name. The Armstrong case happened in America.
5. How old was Daisy Armstrong when she was kidnapped and killed?

Answer: 3

Poirot tells Monsieur Bouc and Doctor Constantine how Daisy Armstrong was kidnapped and a ransom of two hundred thousand dollars was sent. Daisy was found dead. Ratchett's real name was Cassetti. He was the head of the kidnapping gang, and was acquitted on a technicality.
6. Mr Hardman is apparently a travelling salesman. What does he sell?

Answer: Typewriter ribbons

Hardman says that Ratchett described the person who was threatening him as a dark, small man with a womanish voice. Hardman did not know of the Armstrong case.
7. Another member of the Armstrong household, as well as Daisy's father, killed themselves. Which was it?

Answer: Nursemaid

Colonel Armstrong shot himself, and the nursemaid killed herself. Poirot does not know if any of the Armstrong family is still alive.
8. Whose baggage does Poirot say they will find the uniform of the Wagon-Lit conductor?

Answer: Hildegarde Schmidt's

Poirot says if Hildegarde Schmidt is guilty, the Wagon-Lit uniform MIGHT be found in her baggage. But if she is innocent, it CERTAINLY will be.
9. What colour is the Wagon-Lit uniform?

Answer: Brown

As Poirot predicted, the uniform of a Wagon-Lit conductor is found in Hildegarde Schmidt's luggage. Poirot says Hildegarde is a good cook. The murderer pretended to be a Wagon-Lit conductor. There is a pass key in the pocket of the uniform.
10. Who is the only person on the train who smokes a pipe?

Answer: Colonel Arbuthnot

Poirot asks ten questions, to Monsieur Bouc and Doctor Constantine, all which need answers. Poirot made all the passengers write their addresses. All of them used the pen in their right hand - except for Princess Dragomiroff who did not write her address herself.
11. What letter was on the hankerchief, found in the murdered man's carraige?

Answer: H

The handkerchief found in Ratchett's carriage could belong to Mrs Hubbard, Hildegarde Schmidt or even Mary Debenham - whose middle name is Hermione. All three deny it is theirs.
12. What is Princess Dragomiroff's real name?

Answer: Natalia

Poirot says Princess Dragomiroff's Christian name and the grease spot on the Andrenyi's passport are very suggestive, as well as others. Princess Dragomiroff was deliberately vague when she spoke of Linda Arden's youngest daughter. Linda Arden was her stage name. Poirot says that there must be someone so intimately connected to the Armstrong family that the finding of the burnt note would immediately direct suspicion on that person.
13. Who did the handkerchief belong to?

Answer: Princess Dragomiroff

The handkerchief is embroidered with the Russian alphabet. The letter "H" is really the letter "N" in Russian. The Princess says she has no strength in her arms. She admits that she deliberately did not tell Poirot that Helena Andrenyi was Linda Arden's youngest daughter.
14. Who was the chauffeur in the Armstrong household?

Answer: Antonio Foscarelli

Monsieur Bouc says he would not be surprised if everybody on the train had been in the Armstrong household.
15. Who was the only person not to stab Samuel Ratchett?

Answer: Countess Andrenyi

Poirot assembled all the passengers, including Pierre Michel. His first solution is that Ratchett forgot to change his watch to central European time. The murderer boarded the train, and later left it. His other solution is that everybody on the train committed the murder.

After Poirot explains how everybody was connected with the Armstrong household. Bouc and Doctor Constantine says they agree with the first solution.
