Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the first day of Greek class Richard was interrogated by a fellow student. By whom?

Answer: Henry

Henry, always the prideful twit, was quick to show everyone the limitations of Richard's abilities and exposed him for his limited training in Greek Classics.
2. Many oddities were entertained by this small band of classmates including the use of fountain pens. What was the make of the pens in the cup on Julian's desk?

Answer: MontBlanc

If you're not aware of the fountain pen collector crowd you may be surprised to learn that a simple new model of the MontBlanc series will cost you several hundred US dollars. The classic model is the all black with a small white tuff on the top. The white tuff represents the snow on Mont Blanc which is a real alp on the border between France and Italy.
3. In the story Richard says "Orange is the color of insanity" and he gives the credit to this saying to whom?

Answer: Van Gogh

I had never heard this saying before either credited or otherwise so I searched and found nothing with a source. I did find that this is commonly said about the color but not attached with Van Gogh.
4. Who was the minor character that was Richard's boss and who always had a bit of advice regarding cars?

Answer: Dr. Roland

I believe the name Roland is interesting for this story and here's why. Richard takes all of his classes with Julian with the exception of French and French plays apart through out the story. Well, in medieval France there was a historical figure by the name of Roland.

He was the nephew of King Charlemagne and he died in battle in 778 AD. He's immortalized in the poem "Song of Roland" written a full four hundred years after his death; it remains the most oldest piece of French literature to date.
5. Each dormitory on the campus was named. What was the name of the dorm that Richard and Bunny lived in?

Answer: Monmouth House

Hampden is the name the authoress has chosen for her fictitious college. Although she cites real colleges in her story the actual story unfolds in a place made only for the reader. Or is it? Many people familiar with the Bennington campus in Vermont thought she was referring to this location but when she was interviewed she says that the coincidences are merely that, a coincidence.
6. The day Bunny was pushed to his death he was holding a beer in his hand. What brand of beer was it?

Answer: Rolling Rock

I'm not sure if the author intended this slight pun between Rolling Rock and Rolling Bunny but it stuck out to me.
7. Richard finds himself staying in Hampden for the winter break at an old hippie's house. Besides being run down and unfit for human habitation what is the color that it is said to be?

Answer: Purple

The hippie's name was Leo, perhaps that was his astrological sign!
8. In a tiff between Bunny and Henry, Henry calls Bunny "Cuniculus Molestus". What on earth is that?

Answer: An annoying rabbit

The author is really depending on us to either know our Latin or to stop and look in the dictionary... I did the latter.
9. When the story begins with the narration by Richard he states his age as being how old?

Answer: Twenty- eight

The author began writing this book in her second year of college, incidentally at Bennington, Vermont. Sometimes we can gain a perspective on a character by the way an author writes. Such is the case for me when she says that the character Richard is twenty-eight years old but when he refers to the story he's telling he uses phrases like "all those years ago".

It makes sense that a nineteen year old writer may perceive this as a long time and so gives it unto their character a voice in the story.
10. One of the saddest parts of the story was the public suicide of Henry. What was the make of the pistol that he used to end his life?

Answer: Beretta

Another good question would be 'where did the gun come from'? Well since I've run out of spaces for questions I'll just tell you- it was in the nightstand next to the bed at Francis' aunt's house.
