Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are three message colors the sympathizers and insiders in the bordered communities send the homesteaders by using birds. Green means everything is fine and a shipment is coming. Yellow means they've got a problem or delay. And what does red mean, according to Hunter?

Answer: run

Red means run. The first time Lena went to nests, Hunter told her what the colors meant and how it worked. Lena noticed he didn't say what red meant and she asked him. Fear ignites in his eyes, and he says, "Red means run." A long time later, Lena goes to the nests after three days of yellow, and suddenly, she is filled with terror. Red. Red. Red painted feathers everywhere. Lena runs to the homestead to warn her friends and that's when the first bomb falls.
2. What does Tack give Lena in Times Square before the DFA demonstration even though it's not going to rain?

Answer: An umbrella

Tack shoves through the crowd of people to give Lena an umbrella. Lena doesn't understand and tries to protest, but he just disappears and Lena is forced to keep it. Later, she finds out it comes in handy because Tack had stashed a knife instead the handle. She threw the umbrella against the wall and it cracked open, revealing her weapon.
3. When Lena goes into the underground tunnels to follow Julian, what does she clutch in her hand to try to use as a weapon?

Answer: Her keys

Lena tries to use her keys as a weapon, not knowing she has a knife yet. Also, she cannot have had any weapons with her in the first place because the government confiscates all metal objects with metal detectors and body scans. And why would Lena use her ID card as a weapon?!
4. Which of these people is not a homesteader?

Answer: Leaf

There is no one named Leaf in the homestead. Roach is the cook--Raven told Lena about him in the very beginning, saying he could make edible meals of anything. Buck was mentioned with Roach as one of the scouts and Lu is Lucky, the girl who lost a finger but survived.
5. Lena has never killed anything until Raven forces her to. What animal does she "kill"?

Answer: A rabbit

Raven forces Lena to kill the rabbit, taunting her with memories of Alex, saying how one thing always has to die for another to live. Alex died so Lena could live, and that was Raven's whole point, but it only angered Lena and she lunged at Raven with the knife. Raven deflected her attack and took Lena's hand and shoved it into the rabbit, claiming Lena couldn't be mad at her, because her hand was holding the knife in the rabbit. Lena was so furious.
6. What "forbidden" story does Julian tell Lena that he read in his father's second study?

Answer: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

The answer is "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". Julian asks Lena if she wants to hear another story and he begins telling her about a girl named Dorothy and about a tornado that takes her house away and how she smashes an evil witch with the house and munchkins are overjoyed so they gave her red slippers. Lena asks him what comes next, but he says he never read the rest. Lena realizes he didn't make the story up.
7. Which homesteaders do not escape the homestead bombing?

Answer: Squirrel and Grandma

Squirrel and Grandma do not escape the homestead bombing. On page 146, Sarah asks Lena if she thinks that Squirrel and Grandma got out okay, and from Lena's response and how she thinks about what she saw but did not remember seeing Squirrel or Grandma, we can safely assume they are dead. Plus, they never appear in the rest of the book.
8. Julian finds the key to his father's second study in a porcelain statue of what?

Answer: A rooster

Julian says that his father hid the key in a statue of a rooster. He lifted the neck away from the body and put the key inside. Julian saw it when he came out of his room to get a glass of water when he was supposed to asleep and saw his father putting it away. The next day, Julian snuck into the study.
9. What is the line of a song that Julian remembers listening to in his father's second study?

Answer: "All you need is love. . ."

The correct line is "All you need is love. . ." from the Beatles song. It's all he can remember, though. Lena thinks it weird to hear Julian "love" out loud.
10. What is the real reason Blue is named the way she is?

Answer: When Raven found her as a baby, she was barely alive and completely blue.

Everyone assumes Blue was named for her eyes. I did at first too. But Raven told Lena as Blue was dying that she found Blue as a baby in Yarmouth, where she lived, and that day she escaped. Blue was a tiny baby stuffed in a shoebox with a blue blanket with yellow lambs on it.

She was almost dead. Her body was blue from head to toe. Raven was terrified. She tried to revive Blue and has been close to her every since.
11. Julian is an only child.

Answer: False

False. Julian had a brother. Lena was shocked because she'd never heard of his brother, but notice I said "had". Julian's brother was rebellious, naughty. He could have become a member of the resistance. But his father caught him in a rally. He was masked and acting as a protester. Julian's father threw his brother into the basement and left him there while the rest of the family ate dinner. Julian's brother died that night.

A blood clot migrated into his brain while he was locked in the basement.
12. What is the name of the woman whose people save Lena and Julian from the Scavengers, who nurses Lena back to health, and lives underground?

Answer: Coin

The woman's name is Coin. Lena remembers it is an Invalid type of name--they named her Coin because of her disfigured face, one side normal, the other side twisted and droopy and weird. Like a coin, you know. A flip side.
13. Lena doesn't know it's her mother at the time, but when a masked woman rescues Lena from Salvage, Lena tries to take off her mask and sees a number by the woman's ear. What is the number?

Answer: 5996

The number tattooed on Lena's mother is 5996. Lena only discovers it is her mother after breaking into Thomas Fineman's house and sneaking into his second study like Julian said. She finds a book with names of criminals in it and her mother is listed, as well as her prison intake number, which was, you got it, 5996.
14. What is the PIN number for Julian's gate?

Answer: 9174

The PIN number for Julian gate is 9174. Lena remembers how Julian told her the PIN number was always changing and they left clues around the house to help them remember. Lena finds the first three when she sees a passage from the Book of Magdalena, her namesake. It is Book 9, Proverb 17. She finds the last number when she sees four white paper lanterns hanging above the porch.
15. What does Lena compare herself to as she clings to the top of a garbage truck?

Answer: A giant starfish

Lena compares herself to a giant starfish. She was stretched out across the top of the garbage truck, clinging on despite the speed and she thought that from above, she would look like a starfish. I can see why you might think Lena would be a spy though. Have you ever seen a spy on top of a garbage truck in a movie? Hmm, I don't think I have.
16. Who is the girl Lena impersonates to get into Julian's hospital and break him out?

Answer: Sarah Beth Miller

The girl's name is Sarah Beth Miller. Lena stole the ID card from the Scavenger's underground hideout and scratched out the number so the receptionist couldn't read the number. When the woman turned her back and went to scan Lena's card, Lena turned tail and ran into the hospital.
17. Who comes to rescue Lena and Julian at the hospital?

Answer: Raven

Raven comes to rescue Lena and Julian at the hospital. My guess is when she saw Lena gone, she knew there was only one place she could be and went to help her. Raven was somehow able to get in by disguising herself as a lab tech.
18. Who is Julian's primary doctor?

Answer: Dr. Hillebrand

Julian's primary doctor is Dr. Hillebrand. Lena tells the receptionist everyone knows that Dr. Bradshaw is Julian's primary, but she is wrong and the woman corrects her, tipping Lena off to where Julian is. She sneaks into the hospital and pretends that she needs to give Dr. Hillebrand her urine sample and the lab techs she passes tell her exactly where to go.
19. Who does Raven kill in order to provide a distraction for Lena to get Julian free at the hospital?

Answer: Julian's father, Thomas Fineman

Raven kills Thomas Fineman, ironic that the father died while his son lived when it was really supposed to be the opposite. Man, the DFA is going to be in total chaos--the founder dead and the founder's son turned to the opposing side.
20. Who comes "back from the dead" on the last page of "Pandemonium"?

Answer: Alex Sheathes

Alex. Lena nearly passes out when she sees him--the force of his presence is incredible. But Alex appears be to be very different. Who knows what he'll be like now? He's a "new" Alex, too. "He looks different. He is much thinner, and a scar runs from his eyebrow all the way down to his jaw. On his neck, just behind his left ear, a small tattooed number curves around the three-pronged scar that had fooled me, for so long, into believing he was cured.

His eyes--once a sweet, melted brown, like syrup--have hardened. Now they are stony, impenetrable."
