Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We meet Paul, the first victim, in Chapter One "The Town Jail". How old is Deputy Paul Henderson?

Answer: 24

Paul was enjoying his first year on the job. This town's decimation occurred during the off season, so Paul was not really busy when he was murdered.
2. Aida and Jakob Liebermann owned which local establishment?

Answer: bakery

Jenny and Lisa went over to Liebermann's Bakery after finding Paul Henderson dead inside the town jail. Jenny was friends with the couple and knew she could access their locked store by going around the back. The two women had to go down a dark service alley between the bakery and the salon. Once inside, they discovered severed hands on a rolling pin and heads in the oven.
3. According to the sign on the building, Brookhart's sold all but which of the following?

Answer: seeds

Brookhart's was a small town convenience store. They also sold newspapers, gum, chips, popcorn, and candy bars. Sheriff Hammond led his group into the store, followed by Jennifer, Lisa and Tal Whitman. They found large puddles of water in the store, but could not find a source.
4. Jake Johnson was a 58 year old police officer, had never married, and worked in law enforcement for 37 years.

Answer: True

Jake hadn't wanted to be a cop, but followed in his father's footsteps in order to please the man. He often lied about his whereabouts to avoid dangerous police situations, and frugally acquired a sizable nest egg. Jake was not afraid of a confrontation, but was a cautious man who avoided danger. Before he was taken, he was kicking himself for not being able to stay of this dangerous situation.
5. Which one of the police officers disappeared, or was taken, from Gilmartin's Market?

Answer: Jake

Poor Jake Johnson, who'd done his best to avoid danger in 37 years on the job, was taken by the creature. It was Gordy who wondered where Jake could have gone so fast, and Stu who said he wasn't gone, but had been taken. The attack came in Chapter 12, "Battleground".
6. Sheriff Hammond insured that any direct route into the town had been blocked off, no one in and no one out. But, in Chapter 14 "Containment" he discussed one other way in with Santa Mira deputy Charlie Mercer. What was the name of the wilderness trail into the quarantined town?

Answer: Old Mount Greentree Wilderness Trail

That is the official name of the trail, but Charlie also offers Bryce Hammond the local name- Muscle Liniment Highway. The Old Mount starts off as a fire trail 2/3 of the way up on the mountain, but becomes a wilderness foot trail leading right into Snowfield's main ski hill. Bryce explains to Charlie that they will need to station men at the fire trail and send any visitors back down the mountain.
7. In Chapter 18 a man named Burt Sandler is financing a breakfast with Dr. Flyte. Which item listed did Flyte NOT order at Burt's expense?

Answer: milk

Timothy Flyte made a huge order. He started off with champagne, caviar, and 2 different kinds of fresh fruit. He went on to include eggs, croissants, buttered toast, bacon, pork sausage, potatoes, and an assortment of pastries for after the meal.
8. Dr. Timothy Flyte was an archaeologist in the novel.

Answer: True

He worked at a university, but lost his job at age 43 after publishing "The Ancient Enemy". It was this work that Burt Sandler wanted Flyte to update for his publishing house. In the movie, Dr. Flyte was a paleontologist, or a doctor who studies prehistoric life forms. An archaeologist isn't much different, they specifically study prehistoric people.
9. "Bodysnatchers", Chapter 20, illustrates the enormity of this destructive lifeforce. A solitary fox is in the hills looking for food. The creature shows it other animals, but no smell can be detected by the small fox. Which animal forms does the fox see, but not trust due to their lack of odor?

Answer: squirrels and raccoons

Though his curiosity was piqued, the hungry little fox could not be fooled. He knew that no food source was without an odor, and turned around to escape the danger he sensed. Just as he did this, the creature snatched him from out of mid air. After the fox is killed, the remaining raccoons turned into field mice and followed the fox into a crevice to rejoin with the host organism.
10. Who was it that broke the news about the quarantined town to reporter Sid Sandowicz?

Answer: Ricky Bettenby

Sid was at work at the offices of the "San Francisco Chronicle" at 1:40 a.m. when he received a call from fifteen year old Ricky. Sid did not believe Ricky at first, but he did know of the Snowfield quarantine situation. Ricky heard the news through his father Wilson, a professor at Stanford University. Ricky felt his father had sold out by accepting a grant from the military.

This was his way of paying his father back for that perceived betrayal.
