In the Nationals, Eiji played singles against Kai from Higa-chu and determined it was lonely playing singles. He realized he loved playing doubles with Oishi more than singles.

He was hurt on his elbow from a racket hit by a senpai about two years before the start of the main storyline. Tezuka didn't completely heal until his third year.
