Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these authors wrote books mostly in the genre of science fiction, the fourth in the genre of high fantasy. Which of these does not fit with the rest?

Answer: J.R.R. Tolkien

Though Verne wrote before the genre of Science Fiction was created, his works--entitled "Adventure Fiction" would definitely fall in that category today.
2. Which of these is NOT a renaissance playwright?

Answer: William Faust

"Faustus" is actually a play by Marlowe.
3. Which of these authors is known to have been financially sucessful?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Shakespeare earned most of his money from his share of the Globe theatre and not from writing his plays.
4. Which one of these was not writen by C.S. Lewis?

Answer: Mooncalf

"The Horse and his Boy" and "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" are both novels in Lewis' beloved children's classic series "The Chronicles of Narnia".
5. Which of the following was not used in a Disney movie?

Answer: Thumbelina

Despite the fact that the movies "Alice in Wonderland" and "The Black Cauldron" are named after books, Disney took liberties with what's included and used bits from other books by the same authors. "Oliver and Company" is supposed to be based on Dicken's novel and the movie "The Black Cauldron" is based mostly upon "The Book of Three" although it does take some of its storyline from "The Black Cauldron" as well.
6. Before there was such a person as Harry Potter, there was Harold Shea. Who wrote this series about "The Incompleat Enchanter"?

Answer: L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt

Harold Shea uses symbolic logic to transport himself and others into mythology, literature and even poetry. He also discovers the science of magic.
7. Before there was Hamlet with his "play in a play," another tragic character used this tactic to uncover the murderer of his son. Who wrote this earlier play?

Answer: Thomas Kydd

In "The Spanish Tragedy," Heironimo actually kills his son's murderer during the course of his "play within a play."
8. Which of the following writers cannot be accused of entering into the absurd?

Answer: Richard Wright

Wright's most famous works, "Black Boy" and "Native Son," are autobiography and realistic fiction respectively.
9. Who is the author of the fantasy series which includes: "Godstalk," "Dark of the Moon," and "Seeker's Mask"?

Answer: P.C. Hodgell

This question shouldn't be hard, but apparently Hodgell's work isn't that widely known. It should be--her books are some of THE BEST fantasy I've ever read!
10. Which of the following is best known for writing fiction (in its broadest sense)?

Answer: Jonathan Swift

Degas is a visual artist, Rousseau and Dewey are known for their nonfiction.
