Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What gift did Hugh purchase for Sophie?

Answer: A perfume box

Hugh decided to buy his wife Sophie a nice gilded perfume box while marching outside the gates of Constantinople. He placed it in his pouch for safekeeping. While in the city Hugh also got to try foods he had never tasted before: ginger and cumin. The two of them owned an inn built by Sophie's father in the small town of Veille du Pere and such a nice item would please Sophie.
2. While being in several battles in the Crusade, Hugh realized he was only free when he was home with his wife. However, he stumbled upon a Turk alone in a church and was about to be killed. What saved Hugh?

Answer: His own laughter

Even though death was only a second away, Hugh could not help but laugh. He laughed at the audacity of the situation he had found himself in. Hugh looked up at his would-be killer and said "This is your last warning. Are you ready to give up?" Then he explained that he didn't even believe in the cause and continued to laugh.

The Turk admitted he felt the same way and Hugh realized he'd found a kindred spirit in the middle of a war.
3. Who did Sophie name her son after?

Answer: The man who raised Hugh

When Hugh returned to his hometown from the Crusades, he learned that his wife had been taken away. Dark riders came in the night and terrorized the small town. Matthew, Sophie's brother, had the sad chore of telling Hugh that Sophie had given birth to a son that she had named Phillipe. Hugh was so touched because he knew she must have named him after the goliard who had raised him.

They had been trying to have children for years. Hugh never even met his son because the riders destroyed him at such a young age.
4. What did Hugh bury in his son's grave?

Answer: A small cross and a scabbard handle

Hugh had found the scabbard handle on his quest for freedom, in the mountains. It had writing on it in a language he didn't know. Hugh had also taken the small cross as a memento from the church where his life had been spared. He cried as he buried the items in his son's grave.
5. Hugh befriended a cook named Bette while infiltrating Treille. Why did Bette help him?

Answer: He had saved her cousins

While walking to Treille, Hugh encountered a family getting robbed. He stepped in and saved the lives of Geoffrey and Isabel. Bette told Hugh that they were her cousins, so she made a pot of soup and pretended to be ill. Hugh took the soup to the prison's guards to search the prison for his wife, who he thought might still be alive.
6. Hugh never did find his wife after leaving for the Crusades.

Answer: False

When he left the Crusades, Hugh went home as fast as he could. After Matthew told him Sophie had been taken away by masked riders, Hugh infiltrated Treille to search for her. Nobody would ever suspect a jester.... He was convinced she was dead when he couldn't find her.

However, while hiding in Boree, Hugh was shocked to find his wife in the prison. He tried his best to save her but she died soon after of a deep illness.
7. What did Lucien present to Hugh while he prepared his town to defend itself?

Answer: A staff

Hugh encouraged his fellow townsfolk to rise up against their liege, Baldwin. He told them they must "break the pledge" due to his cruel treatment of his people. When a boy named Lucien appeared in town warning of an attack, Hugh demanded to know if he was sent to betray him.

But Lucien, who studied under Hugh's friend Norbert, reminded him that he was on his side. To prove it, Lucien produced Hugh's staff, which he had left behind him in Boree. Hugh was delighted to have his old walking stick returned to him and was grateful for the boy's warning.
8. Which colors represented the Duke Stephen?

Answer: Gold and green

Each duchy had their own colors to represent themselves. Baldwin, the Duke of Treille, wore the colors purple and white. Hugh and his friends lived in Treille and had to suffer under expensive taxes and harsh treatment. The king's colors were purple and gold. The duke reigning over Boree, Stephen, had the colors green and gold. All of his knights wore those colors.
9. Which character killed Stephen?

Answer: Anne

For years, Stephen was horribly cruel to his wife. They had a son together but Stephen was indifferent to him. Stephen also beat Anne at any given whim. Hugh tried to bring him down, but found himself alone with Stephen, who pointed a crossbow at him.

However, Anne had pretended to offer her husband help by proffering up the lance that Hugh had given her. She stabbed her husband with it, thus ending the life of the horribly evil duke.
10. Where did Hugh hide the lance at the end of the story?

Answer: In Stephen's sarcophagus

Only three people attended Stephen's funeral: Hugh, Emilie, and Anne. It was evident that Stephen's subjects were not saddened by his passing. Afterward, Hugh asked for a minute to view the body. He waited until they left and left the holy lance in Stephen's sarcophagus, acknowledging to himself that it had brought him so much pain and misery.
