Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with one of the main characters: Mortimer Folchart. He has a lot of nicknames including Mo, Silvertongue, and the Bluejay. Which of these isn't one of the explanations for his names?

Answer: The villagers in Ombra call him the Bluejay for his flying talents.

Mortimer is called Mo by Meggie and Resa.

Dustfinger (and in turn, Farid) call him Silvertongue because of his ability to read characters out of books.

The Bluejay is a character in Fenoglio's songs. Fenoglio had based him off of Mo and when Mo came to the Inkworld he took over as him. The Bluejay is a robber and the Adderhead enemy.
2. Another important character in the series is Orpheus. He has even more nicknames than Mortimer. What do all of his nicknames deal with?

Answer: his appearance

Orpheus is known as Four-Eyes in Ombra, because he wears glasses. As insults he is known as Cheeseface, Calf's Head, Milkface and Moonface. Farid was the one that started calling him Cheeseface because he is very pale.

Orpheus is a villain and is horribly vain. He has the ability to read things out of books and does so throughout "Inkdeath".
3. Mortola is also known as the type of animal she can transform into. What is her nickname?

Answer: magpie

To turn into a magpie, Mortola puts magic seeds under her tongue. But she swallows too many of them and the bird inside her takes over, making her insane.

Mortola was Capricorn's mother. After Capricorn died in "Inkheart", she became obsessed with bringing him back to life.
4. Violante, the Adderhead's daughter, is fondly known as "Her Ugliness" by her people. What is so ugly about her?

Answer: the birthmark on her face

The large birthmark is on her left cheek. She was married to Cosimo the Fair and the mother of Jacopo. She is kind to her people, but hates her father and plots to kill him in "Inkdeath". She is said to love the Bluejay. She is very important to the plot of "Inkdeath".
5. Darius was Capricorn's reader before Mo. His inability to read well inspired Capricorn's men to give him which of these nicknames?

Answer: Stumbletongue

When Darius read characters out of books he would "stumble" over words and the characters would come out damaged. Most likely he stumbled because he was nervous, but who wouldn't be when his life is being threatened. He later becomes close friends with Elinor Loredan. He also reads Elinor and himself into "Inkheart", luckily without hurting either of them.
6. The Piper, the Adderhead's herald, is known as Silvernose because he wears a nose made of silver. Do you know what happened to his real nose?

Answer: The father of a woman he seduced cut it off.

The Piper was once the minstrel for Capricorn. But then he started working for the Adderhead. He is very powerful and infamous. At one point Jacopo idolized him and wore a fake silver nose.
7. Of course there wouldn't be a story without one very grumpy old man. He is known as Inkweaver among the children and the robbers, but do you know what his actual name is?

Answer: Fenoglio

Fenoglio is a writer. He wrote "Inkheart". In the book "Inkheart" (Cornelia Funke's), he was read into "Inkheart" (his) to replace the Shadow. Once there he wrote songs about a character named the Bluejay, based off of Mo. Through out the series he has helped the good guys by writing things for Meggie to read out loud.
8. Dustfinger, one of the most important characters, is know as the Fire-Dancer by everyone in the kingdom. Why is he known as the Fire-Dancer?

Answer: He is a fire-eater who can make fire do nearly anything for him.

Dustfinger can turn fire into any shape and make it do wonderful and horrible things. He uses it as a weapon and for entertainment. Also the white women love his fire.

Dustfinger is one of the main characters from the very beginning of the first book. His wife is Roxane and his daughter is Brianna. He was taken out of "Inkheart" before the beginning of the series, but has Orpheus read him back in "Inkspell".
9. The Adderhead is the horrible prince who rules the Inkworld. One of his nicknames is simply the Adder, but do you know what his other nickname is?

Answer: the Silver Prince

The Adderhead was once just the prince of the Castle of Night, but after the Laughing Prince dies, he appoints his brother-in-law as the governor of Ombra. The brother-in-law has to listen to everything the powerful Adderhead says. After Mo binds him in the White Book, the Adder's body starts to rot on his bones, but he can't die.
10. Resa Folchart is Mortimer's wife and Meggie's mom, but Resa isn't her full name. Is Theresa her full name?

Answer: Yes

Resa was read into "Inkheart" by Mo when Meggie was quite young. But Capricorn had her read back by Darius, who made her mute by accident. She was Mortola's servant for a few years. Although helping out throughout the series, her most important role doesn't come until the end of "Inkdeath", when she helps Mo escape from the Adderhead.
11. In "Inkdeath", Orpheus' bodyguard was Oss. What was the nickname Farid gave to him?

Answer: the Chunk

Farid calls him the Chunk because he is large and bulky. Oss would torment Farid by stealing his food and abusing him. He is really dumb. Towards the end of "Inkdeath" Orpheus' nightmare eats him.
12. The Laughing Prince was known as the Prince of Sighs towards the end of his life. What sad thing happened that made him sigh so often?

Answer: the second death of his son, Cosimo the Fair

The Laughing Prince was the prince of Ombra until he was killed via poison. It was the Adderhead that had him poisoned. Cosimo died twice, once before the book and once in "Inkspell". Fenoglio wrote that he came back to life and had Meggie read it. The new Cosimo led an attack on the Adder with all the Ombra men, but ended up just having them all slaughtered.
13. In honor of giving him his first son, the Adderhead lets his fifth wife's brother become the new Ombra governor. What nickname does he go by?

Answer: the Milksop

In "Inkdeath"'s second chapter it says the women of Ombra call him the Milksop because he is so puny. Milksop means "a timid man or boy considered childish or unassertive"* which does describe him quite well. He enjoys hunting and having huge feasts. He also takes a lot taxes. Throughout "Inkdeath" he has Orpheus read him all sorts of creatures, including a unicorn.

14. The Strong Man is one of the Black Princes most loyal robbers. His real name is only mentioned a few times in the series: do you recall what it is?

Answer: Lazaro

Lazaro is known as the Strong Man, of course, because he is strong. Doria, another robber, is his younger half brother. He travels with Resa when she goes to the Castle in the Lake.
15. In "Inkdeath", Thumbling is introduced as the Adderhead's bodyguard. Why does he have the nickname "Thumbling"?

Answer: He cuts off the thumbs of everyone he kills.

Thumbling turns the bones from the thumbs into pipes to mock the Piper. He is big and strong. He kills many men throughout "Inkdeath".
