Between 1592 and 1593, more than 10,600 people died from the plague. The theaters re-opened again in late 1594.
2. Who wrote the poem, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"?

Answer: Anonymous

The poem is an alliterative romance depicting the notions of loyalty and chivalry through the adventures of Sir Gawain. It is considered one of the finest examples of early English literature.
3. What was the first of Jane Austen's novels to get published?

Answer: Sense and Sensibility

The novel was published in 1811. Jane did not take credit for the novel; she remained anonymous throughout her life. Her brother later ensured that she got the credit for her works.
4. In George Orwell's "1984" which of the following characters is secretly a member of the Thought Police?

Answer: Mr. Charrington

Mr. Charrington seems so kind throughout most of the novel. His character represents the betrayal and deception that mark Orwell's dystopia.
5. How many of Shakespeare's plays were published in folio form during his lifetime?

Answer: 0

None of Shakespeare's plays were published in folio form during his lifetime--he wrote them solely as performance works, and they were printed (if at all) in quarto form, many of them in different versions from the ones we now know. Two of his friends collected them and published them in "The First Folio" in 1623.
6. Which English poet's heart allegedly would not burn when he was cremated?

Answer: Shelley

This rumor has been going around for years. Its veracity has not been established; however, we do know that Mary Shelley, his wife, kept his heart in storage with her. The heart was later buried after her death.
7. Which gorgeous blank-verse play has been a movie starring Kenneth Branagh and later was revived at London's Finborough Theater in 2007?

Answer: The Lady's Not for Burning

The play by Christopher Fry is a three-act romantic comedy reminiscent of Shakespeare's pastorals. Christopher Fry has often been called a modern Shakespeare. He was a major force in English theater in the 40s and 50s.
8. In C.S. Lewis' book, "The Screwtape Letters", what is Wormwood's relation to Screwtape?

Answer: nephew

The book is an epistolary satire and apology. Lewis, best known for "The Chronicles of Narnia", became a Christian later in life.
9. What was the name of Shakespeare's theater company?

Answer: The Lord Chamberlain's Men

The company name changed a few times as the name of their patron changed. Eventually, the company was awarded a royal patent and were renamed "The King's Men".
10. Which giant of English poetry, while working for publishers Faber & Faber, rejected George Orwell's "Animal Farm"?

Answer: T.S. Eliot

Eliot found the work "unconvincing". He did praise Orwell's writing style, though. It's a good thing Orwell didn't give up at that point!
