Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boromir was the eldest son of the 26th Steward of Gondor. What were the names of his parents?

Answer: Denethor and Finduilas

Boromir's father was Denethor II, the last Ruling Steward of Gondor, and his mother was Finduilas of Dol Amroth. Finduilas was the sister of Prince Adrahil of Dol Amorth, making her sons cousins to Prince Imrahil. Finduilas died when Boromir was ten years old, and her death had a crushing effect on Denethor, who began using the palantir of Minas Tirith, a decision that led to his later madness and suicide.
2. Boromir was loved by his father very much, albeit they were similar in face and pride alone and little else. Boromir was a noted warrior. What was his title?

Answer: Captain of Gondor

"Captain of Gondor" or "Captain of the White Tower" was his title. Boromir's personality bears a great resemblance to King Earnur, the last King of Gondor before the coronation of Aragorn Elessar, since they were both warlike men who cared little about lore and neither of them took a wife.
3. Boromir was one of the military leaders for Gondor when the Sauron's forces attacked Osgiliath. Although Sauron found the defenses in a better state than he hoped them to be, he was able to capture the eastern half of the ruins of Osgiliath. To which element of Mordor's army did Boromir later attribute the results of the battle?

Answer: The Nazgul

In the Council of Elrond, Boromir stated that in the battle there was present a power he had not felt before, which came from a Black Rider, which was a reference to the Nazgul. The taking of the eastern half of Osgiliath allowed the Nazgul to cross the River Anduin and search for the One Ring.
4. As we know, Boromir was one of the attendants of the Council of Elrond. Why did he come there?

Answer: To interpret a dream that troubled him and his brother

A night before Sauron's attack on Osgiliath, both Boromir and Faramir were troubled by a dream. Since they could not interpret it, they spoke of it to their father, Denethor. Since Rivendell, aka Imladris, was mentioned in the dream, Boromir was sent there to find the answer he desired.
5. Boromir joined the Fellowship of the Ring, with his intention being to return to Minas Tirith. After the Fellowship's attempt to cross the Redhorn Pass was thwarted, and despite Boromir's objections, they decided to go through the Mines of Moria. Upon their arrival at the outskirts of Moria, Boromir did something for which he was reprimanded by Frodo. What?

Answer: He threw a stone in the nearby pool.

The reason for Boromir throwing a stone was frustration at the wizard Gandalf's failure to remember the password that opened the Doors of Durin which led into the Dwarf city of Khazad-dum, renamed Moria after being abandoned by its original owners. Boromir's tone irritated the Watcher in the Water, a mysterious 21-tentacled creature which seized Frodo, but Samwise forced it to leave Frodo alone.

The Watcher subsequently tore down the Doors of Durin, trapping the Fellowship inside Moria.
6. While in Moria, Bormir exhibited courage and gallantry. Which of the following sentences describes his actions accurately?

Answer: Blocked the western door of the Chamber of Mazarbul and felled a Cave-troll

The Chamber of Mazarbul was a room in Moria where records were kept by the Dwarves and the location of the tomb of Balin, the Dwarf lord who, 25 years before the Fellowship's passage through Moria, had attempted to recolonize it for his people and had perished in the attempt.

As for the Cave-troll, we know that Boromir hewed its arm, taking it out of acton. Later, during the flight to the Bridge of Khazad-dum, Boromir sounded his Horn to thwart the pursuing Orcs, causing them to halt for a moment.
7. After the journey through Moria the Fellowship found refuge in the woods of Lothlorien, at the domain of Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. Before they departed, the Lady gave them gifts. What did Boromir receive?

Answer: A belt

Boromir received a golden belt from the Lady of Lothlorien. Merry and Pippin also received belts, but theirs were silver instead of gold. Boromir wore it up to the Breaking of the Fellowship and his death.
When Faramir, Boromir's brother, saw his body lying in his burial boat, the belt was the only article of clothing he did not recognize. Later, Frodo explained to Faramir where the belt had been given to Boromir, thus confirming his identity.
8. While sailing down the Anduin, Boromir became increasingly consumed by his thoughts of the One Ring. What were the most notable changes to his behavior?

Answer: He bit his nails and muttered to himself.

The strange behavior of Boromir's alerted Merry and Pippin that something was not going well. Pippin also observed a strange glint in Boromir's eyes when he was looking at Frodo, while they both observed that sometimes Boromir paddled closer to Frodo's boat.
9. Boromir finally succumbed to the Ring and tried to persuade Frodo to hand it over to him. Merry and Pippin went searching for their friend and Boromir followed them. Soon, they were confronted by Orcs from both Isengard and Mordor. Boromir fought valiantly, but he was killed. How old was he at the time of his death?

Answer: 41

Since Boromir was born in Third Age 2978 and died in 3019, he was 41 years old.
Boromir slew twenty or more Orcs before he was killed. He was mortally wounded by many arrows. Apparently, his gallant stand earned him the respect of his enemies, since Ugluk, the leader of the Isengard Orcs, when boasting for his band's accomplishments, stated that they killed "the great warrior".
10. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli reached the scene of Boromir's last stand moments before the death of the Gondorian warrior. After they laid him in a burial boat with the weapons of the Orcs he had killed, they sang a lament for him. Which of the following things was NOT sung about in the lament?

Answer: The East Wind

The lament begins when Aragorn sings about the West Wind, then Legolas sings for the South Wind and Aragorn again for the North Wind. The East Wind is not to be sung, since the Gondorians endure him but do not wait its tidings, because Mordor lies in the East.
