On March 25, the Captains of the West came to the Black Gate in order to draw Sauron's attention from Frodo and Sam who were inside Mordor, trying to reach Mount Doom. The Mouth of Sauron came to meet them. Among the Captains was Peregrin Took, representing the Hobbits. Merry had stayed at Minas Tirith, at the Houses of Healing, after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

They were sent to Barad-dur and the Mouth brought them and showed them to the Captains outside the Black Gate. The Sting was at the possession of Sam, who had taken it from Frodo before the Orcs came, believing that his master was dead. Gandalf took the three things from the Mouth and gave them to Frodo and Sam.

It is not known what happened to the Mouth of Sauron. When Gandalf and the Captains of the West decided not to agree to Sauron's terms, he rode back to the Black Gate and he was never mentioned again. Shortly after, a great army of Orcs and Trolls came out and the Battle of the Morannon began. During the battle, the Ring was destroyed and Mordor was defeated.
