Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with "Dune", by Frank Herbert. What is the name of the muscular control technique that Jessica of the Weirding teaches the young Paul Atreides on Caladan, before the move to Arrakis?

Answer: Prana-Bindu

OK, if you've read the books this one should not have been too hard. Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach, which translates to "Shortening of the Way", and Bene Tlielax is the training planet of the Mentats.

The Prana-Bindu consists of such mind-bending exercises as sitting perfectly still and moving one, and only one, muscle at a time.
2. OK, on to "The Lord of The Rings", by J.R.R. Tolkien. Which of these Black Speech phrases is not inscribed on the back of the One Ring?

Answer: They all are

And it finishes with 4) A-burzum ishi krimpatul.

The complete translation of which is:
"One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all,
And in the Darkness bind them."
3. On to "Ringworld", by Larry Niven. What is the name of the Kzinti that Nessus the Puppeteer supposedly keeps as a pet?

Answer: Chula Rrit

The Rrit family of Kzin are the ruling group on the Kzinti Homeworld. Nessus makes this claim in a crowded restaurant where he hopes to be overheard by a group of Kzin who are having dinner. He is attempting to recruit "Speaker-to-Animals" for his expedition to the Ringworld.
4. Next stop "The Mote in God's Eye", by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. His Lordship Sir Roderick Blaine is set in command over the Battlecruiser MacArthur for the trip to the Mote. What is the name of the Battleship that is commanded by Admiral Khuzkov?

Answer: Lenin

I couldn't resist throwing in the Red Dwarf just for a laugh.

Admiral Khuzkov is well known throughout the Second Empire of Man as the man who burned an entire planet, Isstvan, to a cinder rather than allow it continue its rebellion against the Empire.
5. Jumping to "A Matter for Men" by David Gerrold, what is the name of the teacher of the High School class "History and Moral Philosophy"?

Answer: Whitlaw

An interesting class that teaches people why to fight in a war, in a future where America is still chaffing under a group of agreements similar to those laid on Germany after WWI, and the planet Earth is being invaded by giant purple "Worms" that eat humans. Not a series of books for the fainthearted.
6. Swinging over to "Dragonlance" by Margret Wies and Tracy Hickman, what name is given to the great five-headed black Dragon Goddess that comes down to Krynn to fight against Paladine?

Answer: Takhisis

Also known as the Queen of Darkness, Takhisis comes down from her celestial home to once again try to take over the world of Krynn, using the "Evil" dragons, and the mutated young of the good dragons (called Draconians after their transformation) to fight against the humans, elves, and dwarves.
7. Over to "Citizen of the Galaxy" by Robert Heinlein. It is not until almost two years after his adopted father's death that Thorby Baslim finally learns the man's full name. What is that name?

Answer: Colonel Richard Baslim

As a member of the Terran Hegemony "Exotic Corps", Colonel Baslim was severely injured in a rescue of a shipload of Free Traders from a group of Slavers. Crippled for life, Baslim comes up with the idea of infiltrating the Sargon's homeworld of Jubbalpore from the bottom, as a beggar, to try and learn how the Slave Trade works in order to make it easier for the Patrol to stop.

While there he purchases a small boy named Thorby and makes him a free man.
8. Let's deal out some "Wildcards" by George R. R. Martin. What is the name of the planet whose ruling families engineered the "Wildcard" virus?

Answer: Takis

The "Wildcard" virus is so named because no two people are ever affected by it the same way. Ninty-nine out of a hundred people infected by it die, usually very horribly. The other one percent get changed, becoming "Aces" (persons with super-human abilities like flight), "Dueces" (people who are changed, but it some meaningless way, like one man who can change the color of his skin at will), or "Jokers" (hideously deformed people, often coupled with severe mental derangement).
9. Shall we play "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card? What is the name of the person who taught Ender the basics of hand-held weapons fire?

Answer: Petra Arkanian

After he was assigned to Salamander army, under Bonzo Madrid, Ender accidentally made friends with the one female in that Army. In turn she became one of his greatest co-commanders in the war against the Buggers, until he pushed her too hard, and she snapped.
10. Off to "Discworld" by Terry Pratchett. What is the name of the boy who ends up apprenticed to Death? (Also the name of the fourth book in the series.)

Answer: Mort

Death, desiring to take some time off, hires young Mort to be his apprentice after nobody else would chose him.
11. Are you what Harry Harrison would call a "Stainless Steel Rat"? If so, you should know the name the Press gave to the man who would later become "Slippery" Jim DeGriz's mentor.

Answer: The Bishop

The Bishop was so called because at every one of his crime scenes he would leave behind a business card with a picture of a Bishop (as in the Chess piece, not as in a Church member). After DeGriz realized his mistake in getting arrested, he engineered his escape, and sought the advice of this master criminal.
12. Phillip K. Dick asks, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" What is the name of the opera-singing android that Deckard retires?

Answer: Luba Luft

In the book that inspired the movie "Blade Runner", Rick Deckard is a married Bounty Hunter assigned to hunt down and retire six Nexus-6 class androids that have come to Earth illegally. After retiring the wonderful singing android Luba Luft, Deckard begins to question his place as a Bounty Hunter, and whether destroying the androids is really best for humanity.
13. From the "Star Wars" universe comes "Dark Empire". What is the name of the Frigate that is destroyed on its way into the Coruscant system?

Answer: Rebel Star

Moments after dropping out of Hyperspace, the "Rebel Star" collides with debris from the massive space battle that had taken place over the planet Coruscant. The "Antares Six" is the second frigate of the group, which stays behind to search for survivors.

The "Tantive IV" is Leia's ship from Episode IV, "A New Hope", and the "Century Hawk" does not exist (at least in any of the books I've read so far).
14. Let's go "Star Trek"ing. In Q^2 (Q-Squared), what is the name of Q's godson?

Answer: Trelane

Yes, the infamous "Squire of Gothos" returns, and behold, he is a Q! Not very surprising when you think of Trelane's behavior, and utter misunderstanding of human nature, much like Q himself.
15. OK, back to my all time favorite author, Heinlein, for a final question. In "Starship Troopers", what is the name of Rico's high school sweetheart?

Answer: It never says

Ah ha, did you get caught? Unlike the movie, the book states quite clearly that while Rico and Ibanez were friends, they were not romantically involved. Of course the book also leaves you with the impression, without out-right saying it, that Dizzy Flores was a man.
