Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eris, Goddess of Spite gave Zeus a golden apple. She said that he must give it to the fairest woman. Zeus could not choose so left the decision to Paris, son of King Priam of Troy. But why did Eris want to cause this trouble amongst the Gods?

Answer: Because she was not invited to Peleus and Thetis' wedding

Hera, Athene and Aphrodite all believed that they deserved the golden apple. Hera offered Paris power, Athene wisdom and good luck in war. But it was Aphrodite's promise of the love of the most beautiful woman that won Paris and it was her he chose. The only problem was that Helen, the most beautiful woman, was already married to Menelaus of Sparta. Paris stayed as a guest in Menelaus' house, and when the time came he stole Helen and brought her to Troy with him.

This began the Trojan war that would last ten years.
2. I am a great warrior, and although the Trojan war took my life, I died wearing Achilles' armour. I am the son of Menotius, and the close friend of the King of the Myrmidons. Remind me, who am I?

Answer: Patroclus

Patroclus and Achilles (King of the Myrmidons) were good friends. In book sixteen of the 'Iliad', when Achilles was refusing to fight, Patroclus came to Achilles in tears and begged him to fight. Patroclus then decided to wear Achilles' armour and rally the Greek troops, hoping to scare the Trojans into retreat. Achilles prayed to Zeus that Patroclus would return to him, but his wish was not granted. Their bones were buried together.

Hector was the prince of Troy who killed Patroclus. Automedon was Achilles' chariot driver. Agamemnon was the king of Mycenae and the brother of Menelaus.
3. Find the missing link: Cassandra - Hecuba - Hector - Priam - Paris - Deiphobus -

Answer: Helenus

Cassandra, Hecuba, Hector, Priam, Paris and Diephobus were all members of the Trojan Royal family. Helenus was Priam's son who also happened to be an augur.

Glaukus was the grandson of Belerophontes, and fought for the Trojans. Diomedes fought for the Greeks. When he met Glaukus in battle he refused to fight him because their grandfathers had been friends. Aeneas was a Trojan Hero who survived the war and, according to Virgil's 'Aeneid', went on to found the dynasty in Italy that created Caesar Augustus.
4. I am Sarpedon, son of Zeus! But am I a Trojan, an Argive, a Lycean or a Achian?

Answer: Lycean

When Zeus saw that it was Sarpedon's destiny to die, he wanted to save him, but Hera told him that if he saved his son, all the Gods would want to save their own. So, when Patroclus killed Sarpedon, Zeus sent blood rain pouring down onto the battle field as a tribute.
5. Odysseus sprints across the stony ground, injured and desperate like a wounded stag. He cries out, hoping that his fellow Greeks will hear his plea. But none come, and he is forced to pull out his own spear to fight off the Trojans. What animal did Homer compare Odysseus' Trojan attackers to?

Answer: Jackals

Odysseus survived, and according to mythology he went on to create the idea of the wooden horse that was to be the downfall of Troy (as told in Virgil's 'Aeneid'). On his voyage back from Troy Odysseus came across many perilous adventures, such as the cyclops who captured him and his men in a cave, the sirens, who attracted all men to their deaths and the lotus eaters, with their intoxicating fruits.

This is all told in Homer's other classic, the 'Odyssey'. When Odysseus returns home after twenty years, he finds that his wife Penelope has been faithful, and reveals himself to her during one of the many contests she holds to try to delay her suitors. From then on Penelope and Odysseus live a happy life together ruling their kingdom.
6. Who were the wife and son of Hector?

Answer: Astyanax and Andromache

Astyanax was the son of Hector, although his birth name was Skamandros and had been changed by the people of Troy. When Hector dies in book 22, Astyanax is still only a baby. Andromache is his wife. He rescued her after her father and brothers were killed by Achilles when the Greeks sacked Thebe.

When she finds out that her husband has been killed she falls to the ground, heartbroken for Hector, herself and her son. Ascanius was the son of Aeneas.
7. When Hector and Achilles come to fight each other, the God Apollo who supported the Trojans during the war abandons Hector. But why does he do this?

Answer: Zeus' scales showed that Hector was destined to fall at Achilles' sword.

Zeus put the lives of Hector and Achilles onto his scales, and the former's sunk right down, showing that it was his destiny to die.

Apollo helped Hector by disguising himself as a Trojan and distracting Achilles and then giving Hector the strength to run from Achilles. But Hector eventually chose to face Achilles, and Apollo left him. Athene however, helped Achilles by bringing his spear back for him when he missed, repelling Hector's spear off Achilles' shield, and disguising herself as Deiphobus, brother of Hector, to convince him to fight and promise to help him.
8. Who were Balius and Xanthos?

Answer: The two immortal horses of Achilles

Tamed by Automedon, Balius and Xanthos were immortal horses. Pedasos was a third horse of Achilles' but he was mortal. In book 16, Sarpedon kills Pedasos while battling with Patroclus, and Automedon is forced to cut the horse's body from the other two horses and the chariot.
9. In book 1 of the 'Iliad', during an argument about Thetis, Hera talks about Zeus previously injuring one of her children. Which child was it?

Answer: Hephaestus

Once, during a fight between Zeus and Hera, Hephaestus tried to protect his mother. As punishment Zeus threw him off Mount Olympias. He fell all day long, until finally he stopped. Since then he has been known as the "lame blacksmith" because of the limp he acquired. During this fight about Thetis in book 1, Hera chooses to back down, so that Zeus does not hurt her son again.
10. When Priam is planning to go to the Greek camps to collect Hector's body, what sign does Zeus send to show he will protect Priam?

Answer: A black eagle

The Gods tell Thetis that Achilles must return Hector's body to Priam because he is treating it badly. Achilles agrees, not wanting to disobey the Gods, but apologizing to Patroclus, who Hector killed.

Iris comes to Priam and tells the king to go to Achilles' hut and retrieve the body. Hecuba, Priam's wife says that he would be a fool to go to the Greek camps, so Priam prays for a sign from Zeus to reassure his wife. Zeus sends his black eagle and so Priam knows that he will be safe.
