Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Prologue 1: Secrets", a story is told about the devil. Which reason was given as to why the devil "possessed a not-very-nice pregnant woman for about a year"?

Answer: the devil was bored

Throughout the novel, the devil is described as female. In this case, the devil possessed the body of Betsy's "step-monster" Antonia. Antonia woke up one day, after having giving birth to a baby girl, and did not recall the previous year of her life. She was so freaked out that she decided to get rid of the baby. So, she took her to a hospital and left her there. Baby Laura, who was the daughter of the devil, grew up with wonderful religious parents.

She was a nice girl, but had a terrible temper!
2. Betsy went to an alcohol dependency support group to help her cope with her powerful new thirst (for blood).

Answer: True

In "Prologue 2: Problems" Betsy attended a meeting at the Thunderbird Motel in Bloomington. Most of the point of view of the meeting was from the aspect of a TV cameraman named Charley. A reporter was there documenting the meeting and became fascinated with Betsy. But, becoming fascinated with Betsy was just a side affect of her vampire mojo.
3. There was a vampire who wanted to get married in the book. What was her name?

Answer: Andrea Mercer

Andrea came to Betsy, her queen, to ask Betsy to marry her to Daniel Harris. Andrea had been vamped six years prior, on her twenty first birthday. Daniel was a human man in love with a vampire. Betsy described him as very fun, flirtatious and outgoing. Betsy married the couple at the end.
Darla Connor is a play on Darla and Conner from the series "Angel", Cordelia is from both "Buffy" and "Angel", and Janice Lestat is a shout out to all of the Ann Rice vampire fans. Lestat was Ann's most famous vampire.
4. After Betsy's dad spilled the beans about Antonia's first pregnancy, who in the gang was able to make Antonia confess the details?

Answer: Sinclair

Antonia confessed to Eric Sinclair that she'd gotten pregnant to get Betsy's dad to propose to her. But, it did not work. So, she went on to explain that she knew she was pregnant in Halloween of 1965 and the next thing she knew it was over and 1966. I am not sure why she said 1965 at all, because Laura was actually born June 6, 1986. Like Betsy's affect on most men, Sinclair had an equally enthralling power over most women.
5. Who did Betsy drink from after the "Book of the Dead" made her temporarily insane?

Answer: Jessica

She became very evil after spending way too much time reading from the book. She'd been warned by Sinclair and Tina over and over that the book changes you if you read it too long. So, when Jessica tried to get her to come out of the library she attacked her. Jessica did not forgive Betsy easily, as she'd been really scared.

After drinking from Jessica, Betsy went on to practically rape Sinclair. He was deeply hurt when he realized she'd only turned to him because she was evil and greedy. Taking Eric forcibly, while being evil, also prevented Betsy from hearing his thoughts.
6. After recovering from temporary insanity, Betsy found she could do something new in her vampire life. What was it?

Answer: stay awake during the daylight hours

While the sunlight had never posed any danger to Betsy (unlike all other vampires), she had not been able to stay awake when the sun came up. After her short spiral into evil lunacy, she woke up during the day! This made her very happy, but she was horrified at the way she'd treated Jessica, Eric and Tina.

She could not eat any solid foods, had always been able to touch crosses, 'Bibles', and holy water, and hadn't ever completely stopped breathing. She did breathe, about three times per minute.
7. Betsy's sister Laura is the daughter of the devil. What is significant about Laura that brings in to play the evil trio 666?

Answer: her birthdate, 6-6-86

Betsy discovered that Laura was born nearby to Minneapolis on June 6, 1986. Laura was part of the legacy foretold in the "Book of the Dead". While Betsy was going slightly insane reading the book, she discovered some of the information and the rest just sort of came to her- like knowledge.

She knew that the devil was bored in Hell and came down long enough to possess Antonia for almost a year. Betsy thought it was really strange that her step-mother had been the devil for almost an entire year and no one knew the difference!
8. Betsy's mom is a professor and her name is Dr. Elise Taylor. She teaches History, but what is her specialty?

Answer: U.S. Civil War

Elise was a Civil War expert, most specifically on the battle of Antietam. She was very supportive of her vampire daughter, and talked Betsy through some of guilt over attacking the house-mates. Betsy and her mom are also both huge fans of "Seinfeld". The Battle of Antietam happened in September of 1862.

It had been reported than more soldiers died in this battle than all killed during the Revolutionary War, Mexican War, War of 1812 and the Spanish-American War combined! This victory for the northern states during the Civil War, prompted President Lincoln to announce the abolishment of slavery.
9. Which choice is NOT true about Betsy's sister Laura?

Answer: she smells like lavender

Laura actually smelled like vanilla when Betsy first met her for coffee. Laura admitted she used vanilla extract instead of perfumes. She's tall like Betsy, and told her she'd never met another woman as tall as herself until then. Laura also volunteered at Goodwill and held jobs at Target and SuperAmerica. And, last but not least, she could forge weapons out of hellfire!
10. Where did the "Book of the Dead" end up?

Answer: bottom of the Mississippi River

The book, made of human skin, did not float as Jessica expected. It did sink into the river, which Betsy narrated as the Big Muddy. Of course, it did not stay there for long. It came back in book four. George the Fiend took up residence in the basement of 607 Summit Avenue, as he'd started showing signs of returning to a more intelligent level. Feeding off of his queen (Betsy) seemed to be bringing him back from the brink of madness.
