A Few More Movie Quotes Trivia Quiz

Here's my sophomore effort. I think this quiz covers a better range of genres than my first one. I also tried to step up the difficulty a little bit. Best of luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Is that your gift? Putting up with that guy?"

Answer: X-Men

Logan (Hugh Jackman) says this to Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) while he is settling into his room on his first night in the mansion. The complicated relationship between Wolverine, Jean, and Cyclops (James Marsden) is one of the better executed love triangles I've seen in a long time. I consider the "X-Men" series to be the best superhero movies since "Batman".

This has been a point of much debate with my little sister who feels that "Spider-Man" is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
2. "That's funny. I don't feel drunk."

Answer: Memento

This movie centers around a man (Leonard, played by Guy Pierce) who suffers a head injury and is unable to create new memories. The end result is that every few minutes his short term memory "rolls over," leaving him feeling as if he just woke up somewhere. Sound confusing? So is this movie.

But it is also a brilliant movie that really keeps you on your toes. In the scene in question Leonard is lying in wait to ambush someone and arms himself with a liquor bottle. Unfortunately, he has to wait too long, his memory lapses, and he finds himself sitting with a bottle of tequila in his hand. Upon seeing this his first thought is that he's been drinking.
3. "This sash was a gift to me from the Queen of America."

Answer: The Three Musketeers

While being chased through Paris, D'Artagnan (Chris O'Donnell) crashes through a card game and spills some drinks on Porthos' (Oliver Platt) lap. Porthos then stands up and delivers this line (one of many ridiculous boasts in this film). I picked this quote out primarily because I think Oliver Platt is one of the most underappreciated actors of our time. If you want to laugh, go rent "The Impostors".

He and Stanley Tucci are fantastic in it.
4. A: "This is cousin Paddy. He's coming to stay with us for a while." B: "We don't have a cousin Paddy." A: "You lied to me!" (Hits 'Paddy' with a frying pan.)

Answer: Throw Momma From the Train

This hilarious movie stars Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal. In this scene Owen (DeVito) attempts to convince his writing teacher, Larry (Crystal), to kill Owen's mother (Anne Ramsey). When she walks in on the conversation Owen attempts to lie to cover Larry's identity. I will always love this quote because after seeing this movie my brothers and I would reenact it every time we passed by a frying pan in a housewares aisle, much to my mother's chagrin.
5. "Let's do the 'Thelma and Louise' ending."

Answer: Wayne's World 2

As Wayne and Garth (Mike Myers and Dana Carvey) crawl through the desert wasteland of Wayne's bizarre vision they decide that there are better ways to end a movie. I believe that the "Wayne's World" films were the last SNL skit that translated well to the big screen. Of course, they were also the last SNL skit that came to the big screen that wasn't based on a second rate character that relied on a series of tired catchphrases.
6. "Carnies. Circus folk, you know. Smell like cabbage. Small hands."

Answer: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Mike Myers strikes again! Austin confesses that one of his two fears is nuclear weapons. When asked about the second this quote is his response. I honestly can't remember laughing harder at a movie than the first time I saw this film.
7. "My sainted mother used to do this. She used to...aah! Please don't do this. You're bringing back my unhappy childhood. Talk to me! I can't take it!"

Answer: Phone Booth

When Stu (Colin Farrell) attempts to ignore the sniper (Kiefer Sutherland) holding him captive in the booth, the sniper appears to start flipping out. He then starts chuckling and says, "Just kidding. I had a very happy childhood." Sutherland, using his voice only, gives a psychologically disturbing performance much in the vein of Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs". Right after this film came out Kiefer Sutherland started doing voice overs for a lot of commercials.

In the back of my mind I expect to hear, "If you don't switch your phone service to MCI I will kill you."
8. "These walls are kind of funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, gets so you depend on them. That's institutionalized."

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

Red (Morgan Freeman) delivers this quote right after Brooks commits suicide shortly after being paroled. A lot of movies these days could learn something from this film. While the language and violence are less graphic than many other films of the time and genre, they create a much more lasting impression on the audience because this films bothers to take the time to make the audience actually care about the characters. Thus a movie goer feels what is done and said to these characters so much more.
9. "Should you be drinking alcohol when you don't have a liver?"

Answer: 10 Things I Hate About You

This quote comes from the teenage retelling of "The Taming of the Shrew". Before Cameron can ask out Bianca, he must first find someone to date Bianca's older sister. He and his friend Michael choose Patrick as the man for the job. As the question might suggest, Patrick's past is subject to quite a few rumors. I probably could have picked any of about fifty lines from this movie, as it is quite quotable.

It is also unique for being perhaps the only teen movie that I actually enjoy. The main reason is that at the end of the day this film doesn't take itself very seriously, while others seem to honestly be trying to pass themselves off as Oscar contenders.
10. "I'm a genius, not an engineer."

Answer: The Man in the Iron Mask

This quote comes from the section of the film in which Athos, Porthos, and Aramis (John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons, respectively) are hiding out in the country and plotting the overthrow of the king. Unfortunately, Porthos has become suicidal. Foreseeing this, Aramis saws the beams in the barn so that they will give way if he tries to hang himself from one. What he doesn't foresee is the beam snapping and bringing the entire barn down on top of poor Porthos.

After watching the barn topple Aramis turns to Athos and says the above line in his defense.
