Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opened to highlight a large group of people training in martial arts. They were training to be a part of their country's national team, to compete against the United States of America. What country was to oppose the Americans?

Answer: South Korea

The fighters that were eventually chosen for the Korean team were Dae Han, Sae Jin Kwon, Yung Kim, Han Cho, and Tung Sung Moon. All of those characters were portrayed by famous real-life martial artists. The American team consisted of Tommy Lee (Philip Rhee), Alexander Grady (Eric Roberts), Sonny Grasso (David Agresta), Travis Brickley (Chris Penn) and Virgil Keller (John Dye).
2. To qualify for the American Karate team, the prospective fighters were invited to a tournament to qualify for one of five spots on the team's roster. Of the people who made it onto the team, which two actually fought one another in the qualifying round?

Answer: Sonny Grasso and Travis Brickley

Immediately after Virgil and Sonny started a friendly conversation, Travis and Sonny were called into the same ring. When the match started, Travis landed an impressive side kick into Sonny. Sonny retaliated multiple times but Travis was not injured by the attacks. Travis was eventually kicked out of the match because of his unsportsmanlike conduct.
3. After seeing the roster for the team, the promoter, named Jennings was concerned about Alexander Grady being on the roster. What was the concern that Jennings expressed towards Grady?

Answer: Grady had a severely injured shoulder.

Grady originally injured his shoulder at a tournament many years prior to the one that the film was centered on. Although the details of how the injury occurred were not disclosed, in the film, the viewer was made aware that he had screws and artificial cartilage in his shoulder. Sae Jin Kwon, Grady's match-up in the tournament took advantage of that damaged shoulder and dislocated it with a jumping axe-kick.
4. Of the fighters on the American Karate team, which of the following statements is not true?

Answer: Travis Brickley was a professor at the University of California.

Virgil Keller made the audience aware of his religion when he first met Sonny, at the qualifying tournament. After Sonny told him that he was Italian, Virgil replied by saying that he used to be Italian and that now he was a Buddhist. He then said that he was just kidding and that he was never Italian. Tommy Lee received his invite for the tournament while he was teaching at his school. Travis, on the other hand was definitely not a university professor.

He seemed uneducated and had a tendency for rubbing people the wrong way.
5. To celebrate their entrance onto the American national team, the five men went out for some drinks at the local pub. Did they eventually end up in a fight?

Answer: Yes

The man who caused the fight was Travis Brickley. He asked a tough guy's girlfriend if she wanted to dance. After accepting, she began to make some sexual advances towards him. Her boyfriend, named Burt, took notice and tried to punch Travis. Travis ducked and Burt ended up hitting his girlfriend. Burt got up and attacked Travis with a pool cue. To try and break up the escalating violence, Tommy Lee intervened but it only served to further enrage Burt. Tommy didn't want to fight, but he was forced to when Burt tried to beat him and his friends.
6. After receiving dossiers containing information on the men they were assigned to fight, Tommy Lee was shocked and frightened to learn that he was selected to fight Dae Han. Dae Han was the winner of every major invitational tournament from 1984 to 1988. What was it about Dae Han that made Tommy afraid?

Answer: The fact that Dae Han killed Tommy's brother in a similar tournament.

After discovering that he was the one selected to fight Dae Han, Tommy listened to the rest of the biography and then ran away to the exercise room to pound a heavy bag. Dae Han's face brought back some painful childhood memories, for Tommy. When he was a young boy, Tommy Lee's brother, David, represented America in a similar tournament. Dae Han ended up being his opponent, as well. Dae Han thrashed his brother, until he threw a final kick that broke David's neck, instantly killing him.

The effect on the young Tommy Lee was highlighted when he shockingly dropped his ice-cream cone, during the flashback.
7. After hearing some startling news about his son, Alexander Grady thought that it was his fatherly duty to leave and go to be with his son. Although the coach told him that he'd be kicked off the team, Grady left anyway. What happened to Grady's son?

Answer: He was hit by a car.

In the beginning of the film, Alex Grady was teaching his son, Walter, how to ride a bicycle. Later in the film, while he was riding his bike, a driver was unable to see him and ended up colliding with the young child. Walter was in a coma and almost lost his leg, however when his father arrived, he pulled through.

After seeing his son progressively get better, Alex returned to the team's training facility to see if he could get back onto the team. Although the coach was reluctant to place Grady back on the team, he was eventually forced to because the team got together and persuaded him.

Besides, the team needed five men, and without Grady and Tommy, they only had three.
8. Before leaving for Korea, the remaining four members of the American team were waiting for Tommy, who had taken time off due to personal reasons. He returned in time to discover that Travis Brickley had changed. Travis realized that the team, not the individual was most important. There was also something different about Virgil. What was it?

Answer: He shaved his beard and moustache.

At the airport, before their flight, Virgil went into the washroom and shaved off his prized facial hair. He said that he did it to make himself more aerodynamic. After he left the washroom, Tommy arrived and was accepted back onto the team, by the coach.
9. During their final fight, Tommy Lee and Dae Han put up a grand display against one another. After an intense fight, Tommy Lee tried to end it by doing what?

Answer: Breaking Dae Han's right knee and then knocking him down

Prior to Tommy's fight, Virgil, and Sonny had suffered humiliating losses against their respective opponents. Travis only lost because he couldn't break more bricks than his opponent. Alex claimed a victory against his opponent, despite the fact that his shoulder was dislocated. During Tommy and Dae Han's fight, neither man seemed to be getting an edge.

They both landed hit after hit, until Dae Han began to get desperate, and started throwing illegal techniques. Tommy grew tired of it and tried to end the fight. Tommy broke Dae Han's right knee and then knocked him to the ground, detaching his eyepatch in the process. Showing his perseverance, Dae Han stood up and held his weight uneasily on one leg.

Although Tommy was angry that Dae Han killed his brother, Tommy did not attack the defensless Dae Han.

As soon as the buzzer sounded to end the match, Dae Han dropped to the ground, unconscious. The Americans ended up losing the tournament, by a final score of 33-32.
10. At the end of the film, the team against America gave the Americans their medals.

Answer: True

After Tommy Lee's honorable display, during their match, Dae Han limped over to Tommy to tell him something. Dae Han said that to save a life in defeat was to earn victory and honour. Dae Han then said that because he killed Tommy's brother he would offer himself as Tommy's brother. Next, Sae Jin Kwon walked over to Alex Grady and said that he knew everything about him. Soon, all of the Koreans gave the American team their medals and formed a friendship that proved to be quite benificial in the film's sequel, "Best of the Best 2".
