Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first buddy movie is 'Steel Magnolias' (1989). It was about southern belles. The movie starred Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah and....Well, that's the question. Who was the other buddy in this film?

Answer: Olympia Dukakis

This movie was about friends who gathered at a beauty shop in Louisiana. It made you laugh and cry and some may have considered it a 'chick flick' but it was so well done that many men didn't mind admitting that they enjoyed the movie.
Olympia Dukakis played Clairee Belcher, the wealthy widow of the former Mayor. Clairee was best friends with Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine). Dukakis worked mostly on TV until she appeared in 'Moonstruck', 'Working Girls' and 'Look Who's Talking' just prior to this movie.
Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar and the movie won a People's Choice Award.
2. This buddy movie had a sports theme and was released in 1992. It starred Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Rosie O'Donnell and Madonna. What was the name of the movie?

Answer: A League Of Their Own

During WW II, all the able bodied men were off fighting so it was up to the women to keep baseball alive. Two sisters joined with other women to form a league. The four buddies mentioned were part of the Rockford Peaches, managed by the world's worst manager, played by Tom Hanks. He changed his ways and the women formed a lasting bond.
The movie was directed by Penny Marshall, who may know a thing or two about buddies. She starred in 'Laverne & Shirley', a TV series about buddies, that ran from 1976 to 1983.
3. 'Charlie's Angels' was released in 2000. It was about three extraordinary women who worked for a man named Charlie. Who were the three actors/angels?

Answer: Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore

Three women worked for an unseen boss. They each possessed a multitude of skills but were better when they worked together. These buddies used disguises and out of this world martial art skills to bring down the bad guys.
This movie was based on a TV series of the same name, that ran from 1976 to 1981. Do you recall the names of the buddies from that show?
There was a follow up to this movie that was released in 2003 but it was not as popular.
Cameron Diaz started in feature films in 1994. She is probably best known for 'There's Something About Mary' (1994) and she has been the voice of Princess Fiona in a few 'Shrek' movies.
Lucy Liu started her career on 'Beverly Hills, 90210' in 1991. She eventually migrated to film and made 'Kill Bill' in 2003. She has also voiced characters in animated features.
Everyone probably knows the Drew Barrymore comes from a famous acting family. As a child, she was in 'E.T.'(1982) and 'Firestarter' (1984). Like many talented actors, she has tried her hand at directing and producing.
4. This 1996 movie was about four high school girls who relied on each other to make their spells stronger and their wishes come true. Which movie starred Neve Campbell, Fairuza Balk, Rachel True, and Robin Tunney?

Answer: The Craft

Three buddies pulled off minor spells but when Sarah (Robin) moved to town and joined the group, they were able to do some remarkable things. This all started out as fun and games but went too far and Sarah left the group. The buddies were never the same again. Nancy (Fairuza), the ring leader, got what she deserved and Rochelle (Rachel) and Bonnie (Neve) were the only 'buddies' that were speaking to each other by the end of the movie.
5. You hear 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' and your eyes begin to get blurry. The song was the theme for another great buddy movie, 'Beaches', released in 1988. Who were the stars of this movie?

Answer: Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey

Rich met famous and the rest was history. Bette and Barbara's characters met as kids and stayed in touch through letters for many years. They eventually lived together and loved the same man.
Bette Midler played Cecilia Carol Bloom. Bloom was an actress and singer from New York. Midler started her life as an artist by singing. She incorporated comedy into her act and eventually started acting in TV roles. She recorded 'The Wind Beneath My Wings' for this movie.
Barbara Hershey played Hillary Whitney. Whitney's family was rich and lived in San Francisco. Hershey was born in California and even though she was shy, she always dreamed of being an actress. She started acting in TV series.
The movie was nominated for an Oscar for art direction.
6. This movie was released in 1994. It was about four prostitutes who ended up on the run after a customer was killed. What was the name of the movie that starred Mary Stuart Masterson, Andie MacDowell, Madeleine Stowe, and Drew Barrymore?

Answer: Bad Girls

These women needed buddies. Not only did one of them kill a 'john' and escape from prison but they all had to look good while riding horses and shooting guns. They faced the hardships of the old west, a gang of bandits, and the Pinkertons, a well known detective agency from the good old days.
7. 'Set It Off' was released in 1996 and starred four women who were friends and in need of money. They decided to rob a bank. Kimberly Elise and Queen Latifah were two of the stars. Who were the other two?

Answer: Jada Pinket Smith and Vivica A. Fox

Vivica A. Fox played Francesca Sutton, a bank employee. When the bank was robbed and Sutton admitted knowing a robber, she was fired. She went to work for a janitorial company where her three best friends worked. Fox started her acting career in 1988 by appearing in several TV series. She had a relatively small part in 'Independence Day' which was released the same year as this movie.
Jada Pinkett Smith married Will Smith in 1997. She debuted in film in 'Menace II Society' (1993). She also directs music videos. Smith played Lita Newsome, who was also a janitorial worker. Newsome's parents were dead and she was trying to care for herself and her younger brother.
These buddies started out poor and talked each other into robbing banks to take care of that problem. They knew they had to be cool and not call attention to themselves but they just didn't seem to be able to help themselves. The more they took, the farther apart they got, and soon, this wasn't a buddy movie any more.
8. In 1995, Whitney Houston, Lela Rochon, Loretta Devine and Angela Bassett starred in a movie about the trials and tribulations of best friends. What was this movie?

Answer: Waiting To Exhale

The tagline for this movie was 'Friends are the people who let you be yourself...and never let you forget it'. Friends, buddies, one and the same. These ladies started out buddies, lived their lives, met men, made families, created careers, and went their separate ways, only to come back together as only buddies could.

The movie examined each woman's relationship with the man of her life. 'Waiting To Exhale' referred to being able to breath and feel contented in a relationship with a man.
9. In 1989, Winona Ryder wanted buddies, but once she was in with the 'in' crowd, she killed them off. What was the name of this movie?

Answer: Heathers

The buddies at a midwest high school were three Heathers and Veronica (Winona Ryder). When a new student (Christian Slater) started school and fascinated Veronica, she realized how much she didn't want to be buddies with the Heathers any longer. She accidentially killed one Heather, made it look like suicide, and things went downhill from there.
This was a black comedy and won the Edgar (an award named for Edgar Allan Poe). It was also listed by 'Empire' magazine as one of the 500 greatest movies of all time.
10. This was the quintessential buddy movie, (1991). The question is, who played Thelma Dickinson and who played Louise Sawyer?

Answer: Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon

These ladies decided to leave their humdrum lives and hit the road in a convertible. Along the way to Mexico, they killed an attempted rapist and were chased by the police, and by all available law enforcement, by the look of the final scenes. The ultimate buddies stuck together as they drove the convertible off a cliff.
Susan Sarandon played Louise. She started her acting career in 1968 when she attended a casting call with her actor husband, Chris Sarandon. He didn't get a part, but she did. In 1975, she starred in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'.
Geena Davis played Thelma. Even as a child, Davis always wanted to be an actress. Her first movie was 'Tootsie' (1982). She starred in 'Beetle Juice' (1988) and 'Cutthroat Island' (1995).
