Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the movie opened, the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) was accused of cheating in a poker game. After the gambler found out who Sundance was, he decided he didn't want a gunfight. As Butch and Sundance left, the gambler asked Sundance how fast he was. What did Sundance do?

Answer: He shot off the gambler's gun belt.

The gambler realized that having a gunfight with the Sundance Kid was a bad bet and backed out of it. But, being a gambler, he wanted to know if he was being bluffed about the Kid's speed. So the gambler shot off his mouth and Sundance shot off his gun belt. Just to rub it in, Sundance shot the gambler's pistol several times, sending it across the floor.
2. The Hole in the Wall Gang, led by Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), had robbed Union Pacific Railroad trains several times. While they were robbing the "Flyer" one more time, a second train approached and a mounted posse leapt from a box car and started chasing the gang. After being followed all day, Butch and Sundance hid in a brothel in a town they knew. They sent an old man out to misdirect the posse if they came through. What was the old man's name?

Answer: Sweet Face

Butch told Sweet Face, "You do this right and I'll get you an old dog to kick." Sweet Face sat on a bench across the street until the posse came through, then directed them out of town. They came back in a few minutes. When one of them pointed a gun at Sweet Face's head, he pointed to the building where Butch and Sundance were hiding and the chase was on again.
3. The posse sent by the Union Pacific Railroad to kill Butch and Sundance included Joe Lefors, a lawman from Wyoming, and an Indian tracker who said he could track anyone over any terrain. What name did the Indian give himself?

Answer: Lord Baltimore

Lord Baltimore was a real scout and tracker for the U.S. Army, but there is no evidence that he ever tracked Butch and Sundance. In the film, he was said to usually stay in Oklahoma, the implication being that the Union Pacific owner wanted these outlaws so badly that money was no object in obtaining the people to find and kill them.
4. Tired of being chased, Butch and Sundance dropped in to see a sheriff they knew. What was Butch's idea about 'going straight'?

Answer: join the army

According to Butch: "They don't even have to make us officers!" The sheriff told them the hard facts of life. "It's over. Don't you get that? Your times is over, and you're gonna die bloody, and all you can do is choose where."
5. Butch convinced Sundance to move to Bolivia, taking Sundance's girlfriend, Etta Place, with them. As they got off a train in a remote village, what place did Sundance say it might be compared to?

Answer: Atlantic City, New Jersey

Sundance thought the desolate little village might be the garden spot of Bolivia, the Atlantic City of the country. As he and Butch exchanged words about the wisdom of going there, Sundance said he knew about Atlantic City because he was from New Jersey. The real Sundance Kid was actually from Mt. Clare, Pennsylvania.
6. Deciding to get to work and rob some banks in Bolivia, Cassidy and the Kid encountered some problems on their first try. What did Etta say they needed?

Answer: a specialized vocabulary

Etta was a former schoolteacher and put them through some language drills. Butch still needed a cheat sheet for the bank robbing commands.
7. Bolivian authorities printed wanted posters for Cassidy and the Kid. What name were they given?

Answer: Bandidos Yanquis

To make sure everybody looked for the right Yankee bandits, the posters had "Bandidos de los Estados Unidos" printed underneath.
8. After thinking he saw Joe Lefors in a Bolivian town, Butch decided again that they should go straight. They applied for jobs at a mine, owned by Percy Garris, an inveterate tobacco chewer. When Garris spit tobacco and it landed where he wanted, what did he say?

Answer: "Bingo!"

Garris called himself "colorful", saying after you lived alone in Bolivia for ten years you got colorful. Bolivian bandits shot him a second later.
9. Near the end of the film, Butch and Sundance stopped in a small village to eat and rest. How were they identified?

Answer: They were recognized by the brand on a mule they had stolen.

A young boy saw the brand on a mule Butch and Sundance took when they robbed a payroll mule train and told the Captain of the local police.
10. Wounded and trapped in a building, Butch and Sundance prepared to make a run for it, not knowing that what appeared to be a whole company of Bolivian soldiers had set up on rooftops overlooking the building in which they took cover. What was Butch's great idea of where they should go next?

Answer: Australia

Butch told Sundance the banks, and the women, were easy in Australia. And they spoke English, too. They emerged shooting, to be met by a hail of gunfire from the soldiers.
