Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont made a wager if he could romance Madame de Tourvel. What proof did the Marquise want as evidence of Madame de Tourvel's relationship with Valmont?

Answer: To see it written in her own hand

The Marquise de Merteuil would not let Valmont off easy, nor would she believe what he told her. She wanted concrete proof, and she made it difficult so as to not lose the wager.
2. After a brief love affair, Valmont was encouraged by the Marquise de Merteuil to end the relationship with Madame de Tourvel. The Marquise loved the feeling of controlling Valmont, and he had too much of an ego to admit that any woman could truly win his heart. What was the reason Valmont gave to Madame de Tourvel for breaking with her?

Answer: "It's beyond my control."

The Marquise de Merteuil suggested to Valmont that he use this reason to break with Madame de Tourvel. Valmont did, and repeated this phrase over and over, which infuriated Madame de Tourvel. Valmont was so cold and cruel to Tourvel, it drove her into deep depression, and she became ill.
3. Cecile de Volanges was a lovely young girl, but not particularly talented. What kind of lessons did Cecile take part in?

Answer: Music and singing

In one scene, the Marquise de Merteuil walked in while Cecile attempted to play the harp and sing. The sound was horribly off-key, and all the Marquise could do was roll her eyes.
4. How did the Viscomte de Valmont really feel about Madame de Tourvel?

Answer: He loved her deeply.

Valmont did not expect to fall in love with Madame de Tourvel. He wanted to conquer her affections, because she was known as someone who would never stray from her husband. But her beauty and virtue was something Valmont grew to love. He had never experienced true love before, and it surprised him.
5. Le Chevalier Danceny and Valmont engaged in a duel to the death over Valmont's affair with Cecile. As Valmont lay dying, he confessed everything to Danceny. What else did Valmont do to prove what he is said to Danceny was true?

Answer: He gave Danceny all of the letters the Marquise de Merteuil's wrote him.

Valmont had kept every letter the Marquise had written about the scheme involving herself, Valmont, Madame de Tourvel and Cecile. As he lay dying, Valmont gave him the letters, and Danceny ensured those letters were circulated.
6. Why did the Marquise initially want Valmont to have an affaire with Cecile du Volanges?

Answer: Cecile was engaged to the Marquise's ex-husband.

The Marquise de Merteuil's original plan was for Valmont to seduce Cecile to embarrass her ex-husband. Valmont said "no" to the Marquise's request, thinking this challenge too easy. He later accepted the challenge as a revenge against Cecile's mother, Madame du Volanges.
7. To ensure that Madame de Tourvel was confident of Valmont's love for her, he would write her letters when he was away. What did Valmont use as the table for the letter we see him write to Madame de Tourvel?

Answer: The backside of a courtesan

At times it was difficult to watch how cold and unfeeling Valmont could be. The courtesan was in on the deception, and even laughed at Madame de Tourvel when she came to visit Valmont.
8. Madame de Tourvel was ashamed for betraying her husband, and humiliated by Valmont when he told her he didn't love her. What did she eventually do?

Answer: She died of a broken heart.

Madame de Tourvel was literally sickened by what Valmont had done to her, and the fact that she was so used by him. Doctors tried everything to help her; even leeches. Alas, nothing could heal a broken heart.
9. Valmont engaged in a duel with Danceny, over the affair he had with Cecile. When the Marquise de Merteuil heard about the death of Valmont, how did she react?

Answer: She was heart broken, and wept violently.

The Marquise de Merteuil had hoped to avenge her ex-husband, and also entice Valmont into wanting her. Although she loved the "game" of using people, she never expected it would result in a duel between Danceny and Valmont. When she learned of Valmont's death, she completely broke down and wept.

It was clear that in spite of the cruel game she had played, she had loved Valmont the entire time.
10. In our final scene, the Marquise de Merteuil attends the theater. At this point, she has affected the lives Valmont, Danceny, Cecile, Madame de Tourval, Madame du Volonges, and her ex-husband, all in a negative way. What happened to her upon entering the theater?

Answer: She was booed and forced to leave.

Danceny had circulated the letters, and everyone knew the cruel game the Marquise de Merteuil had played. In the end, the Marquise left the theater. She calmly removed her face makeup, and realized her life had changed forever. But, was she really remorseful? Or did she only wish she hadn't been exposed?
