Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 2013 film, an anthology of horror shorts created by different genre directors, was a sequel developed by Bloody Disgusting and The Collective?

Answer: V/H/S 2

After 2012's surprise cult hit "V/H/S" hit the horror scene, bringing five newer directorial talents to the forefront with video-tape-themed horror shorts, online horror community Bloody Disgusting created a second film in the franchise, released under their own studio, The Collective. This film followed the same premise wherein a framing narrative facilitated the viewing of several horrifying scenarios. This second film featured the directors of "The Blair Witch Project", "You're Next", and "Hobo With a Shotgun" amongst others.

Why didn't you see it? Due to a limited release, the film failed to take in much of a draw in the box office. Unlike the first "V/H/S", it did not make as extensive a film festival circuit before getting released on VOD, DVD and...yes...VHS.
2. Nell was the only character to return in what poorly-received horror sequel about possession, released theatrically in 2013?

Answer: The Last Exorcism Part II

Why didn't you see "The Last Exorcism Part II"? Well, despite theatrical release and backing from horror director Eli Roth (as was given to the last one, which was a mockumentary-style success in 2010), this second venture with Nell, the possessed contortionist farmgirl, was not a popular movie.

Although it earned $15,000,000 in the box office, it's meager compared to the $67,000,000 earned by the original. Once again, Nell needed to deal with the obvious demon problem in which she was once again possessed by Satan or something like it (it's actually a demon named Abalam).
3. Criminals and murderers go head to head in what 2013 movie, involving a Driver, an heiress, and several brutal attacks?

Answer: No One Lives

Ryuhei Kitamura, who directed "The Midnight Meat Train", returned to the director's chair for "No One Lives" which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 but received its wider release (though still quite minimal) in 2013. Only making back $70,000 in theaters, it was well-liked by viewers but panned by critics for being too short, too brutal, and too campy. Why didn't you see it? Well, the odds are against you -- very few saw it in the theaters and Anchor Bay later released it on DVD with a nearly three million dollar loss.
4. Despite this film starring Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode in leading roles, what uncanny horror movie, about a family's dark secrets, was released to minimal fanfare in 2013?

Answer: Stoker

Also starring Mia Wasikowska in the leading role, "Stoker" made enough to recoup its $12,000,000 budget and little else. Written by "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller, "Stoker" followed the events that occurred after the death of Richard Stoker when his daughter, India, had to live with her concerned mother and uncle. Why didn't you see this one? Well, director Park Chan-wook's other movies, all South Korean staples (like "Oldboy") are not English.

While typically quite brutal, they're not typical fare for theater-goers.

Despite good reviews and a strong cast, the movie simply didn't get enough exposure.
5. Featuring Sheri Moon (of course) and involving witches in Massachusetts, what stylized Rob Zombie film released in 2013?

Answer: The Lords of Salem

Released alongside a thick novel in 2013, "The Lords of Salem" had a brief film festival appearance at the end of 2012 before getting the limited launch in April 2013. You likely didn't see this one because it's a niche film; Rob Zombie's movies have had a tendency to be quite polarizing.

Although the film was graphic and gritty, much like Zombie's other horrors, it wasn't considered scary. It failed to recoup its budget, but the book brought Rob Zombie onto the bestseller lists.
6. Despite being a sequel to "Haunting in Connecticut", what was the subtitle of the movie's 2013 sequel starring Chad Michael Murray?

Answer: Ghosts of Georgia

Sure enough, we've switched states for the sequel. We also switched casts; Virginia Madsen and Kyle Gallner didn't return for this poorly-received sequel. Why didn't you see it? Well, aside from studios dropping this film with minimal promotion, the movie only received $2.5 million in the box office. Featuring both Abigail Spencer and Chad Michael Murray, the movie was similar to the first in that there was a haunting, but this one featured the ghosts of Southern slaves. Why the word Connecticut appeared anywhere in the title was beyond me.
7. Eli Roth went in front of the camera for what limited release film, about a Chilean earthquake, seen in theaters in 2013?

Answer: Aftershock

You likely wouldn't have seen "Aftershock" in theaters because of its strikingly minimal theatrical release. Written and directed by Nicolás López, it put the director of "Hostel" and "Cabin Fever" in front of the lens for a horror film (though he was in Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" and "Inglourious Basterds" as well).

In this movie, a group of foreigners enjoying Chilean nightlife were caught in an earthquake and the deadly ensuing panic thereafter. The film earned around $50,000 in the box office, barely a dent in its $2,000,000 budget.

It premiered at TIFF but flopped afterward despite so-so reviews.
8. Don Mancini brought back his horror brainchild in 2013 with what playful sequel about a killer doll?

Answer: Curse of Chucky

Why didn't you see this movie? Likely because it went straight-to-video. While many of the earlier "Child's Play" movies involving the Brad Dourif-voiced, killer 'Good Guy' doll were popular theatrical releases, this one was filmed and release in the span of about a year, stopping off at a few festivals along the way. What followed was surprisingly well-received.

Unfortunately, it never saw an official release until its VOD and DVD debut. This movie, the sixth in the series, explained Chucky's origin while putting a new group of people through the wringer. Evil doll this, evil doll that...you know.
9. Victor Crowley came back from the dead (again) in what 2013 sequel, set in the bayou of Louisiana?

Answer: Hatchet III

Continuing the never-ending fight between MaryBeth and the supernatural Victor Crowley, "Hatchet III" brought even more people into the swamps to get butchered by the immortal spirit. Why didn't you see this movie? Likely because after the first "Hatchet" was released on countless film festival line-ups in 2006 and 2007, the sequels never received the same amount of coverage.

Although this sequel features roles starring Derek Mears and Zach Galligan, the cast isn't as star-studded as "Hatchet II", which featured names like Tony Todd and Tom Holland.

In fact, "Hatchet III" didn't have Adam Green as director either; BJ McDonnell took over.
10. Heading into the Arctic Circle, what 2013 found-footage film involved the search for a fictional being?

Answer: The Frankenstein Theory

While "The Last Exorcism: Part II" was being made by a new team, the makers of the original opted to film this movie instead. Placing a supposed documentary film crew into the snowy Arctic, "The Frankenstein Theory" hypothesized that Mary Shelley's story was true and that the monster would be out there. Sure enough, they found something inhuman.

You likely didn't see this one, partly because it didn't get a major release in theaters and partly because it was considered quite bad by critics. Even at less than an hour and a half, the movie went by slowly and in desolation.
